So, we all know Nasu loves characters with broken lives, broken histories, broken personalities...but, who do you think has it the worst off in the Nasuverse? Off the top of my head, I'm torn between Kotomine and Archer. Spoiler: click to toggle

Nice reflection, Xeno. About Kotomine: I think he just want to generate new things of life. He's eager to see new conflicts and aftermaths, and to take part on its creation as well. Kirei is one of the most incredibly well done chars I've ever seen. He's the perfect nemesis because he's not stupidly evil, he has his own values and rebelled against the imposed ones. He's a free spirit who actively tries to enjoy life being himself, and I feel somewhat identified with him. Archer being his counterpart, this has a lot of sense. Specially if you take in account the enmity that Shiro feels when Kirei is close. He just can't stand to have a conversation with him, even his mere opinion puts Emiya out. |

Which is rather ironic, Animus, because I feel somewhat identified with Emiya. I think I'm still stuck at Shirou's choice between "become a superhero" and "save Sakura," but it's interesting to reflect on the parallels I have with him. Also notable is the disdain I have for 'becoming a superhero' being a bad end. Makes you wonder... |

Shinji. he's so screwed up he thinks he rocks, and you have to be pretty screwed up to think that! at least Evangelion Shinji acknowledges he sucks. Edited by CrimsonMoonMist, Nov 13 2009, 05:41 PM.

Shinji is just a common result of someone with an inferiority complex. He was typical do-man-evil-deeds. How could you say compared to the rest of the cast he's the most conky? He knew he was worthless. That's why he did everything he did. I don't think Kotomine is all that messed up, either. He took a different outlook on life and followed through with it. He married to try and make himself happy, when he simply realized he was discontent with the world. I mean, that shows he tried to integrate himself into society. If that doesn't show sanity I don't know what does. Edited by Gilgamesh, Nov 13 2009, 05:52 PM.

I just want to clarify that by "messed up" or "screwed up" I don't mean insane, batty, evil, etc, but "broken." And by broken, I almost mean 'tragic', with an emphasis on tragedies that affected their ability to live 'normal' or 'happy' lives. Examples of what I mean by tragic: Spoiler: click to toggle I think Sakura might be a good candidate too, now that Grim mentions it. |

I don't think Kuzuki "understands what he did was wrong", because he still helped Caster so its not in past tense, and since he was trained to be a killer that's all there is to it, he really doesn't have any conflicting issues. Wallachia and Nero are not screwed up(in the mental way), they show fear like normal people at higher powers and aren't actually human anymore. Sakura does seem pretty screwed up from child abuse rape and worm infestation and all, and the whole dark sakura thing (That was probably more demented than Kirei's "saving the world speech", I actually liked that philosophy) Now I think another candidate for this should be Caren Ortensia. |

Heh...i'd think it's Kirei. He is so broken that he doesnt care if the world is destroyed, if it means that he can preserve his own happiness. Not 'good' in any way, but not really evil either. In my opinion anyway. In any case, he would never gain salvation, which is just as or even more sad than Archer not ever remembering his. |

Hoh! This post is turning into something... *POSSIBLE SPOILERS* About Souichiro, he has no objectives in life and he's less than a human. He's just the perfect tool. I really doubt about his love to Caster and I also think he's not screwed up: he's way to plain for that. I agree with the opinions about Kotomine. He tried hard to be happy using imposed ideals, but he never could do that. So he accepted the abyss within him and started to truly enjoy life while creating his own personal values. You can't judge him, he's definitely beyond good and evil. Xeno, in your own terms of tragedy, Sakura wins by far. Her story is full of drama, rejection and repression. And all these things came out of her together when she adopted her dark form. I think that the most interesting about her is that she was not forced to have and evil attitude: all that hate, fury and lust were repressed inside her; I mean even while being dark, she still was the same Sakura.

HmmHmm... I think here might be the point to launch into some philosophical discussion :D **HF ROUTE SPOILERS FOLLOW** If you consider Sakura as not being forced to be evil (or have an evil attitude, I'm not going to differentiate for my purposes), is there anyone you consider being forced? I ask, because I don't think any of the characters were forced to be evil, nor am I even sure that anyone is forced to be evil in general, but it seems to me Sakura could be the only one to could claim she was forced thanks to Angra Manyu. I mean, she's 'normally' is a pretty good person. Wants to do the right thing, is generally kind, helpful to others etc. She's infected with Angra Manyu and driven almost past insanity with everything the Matous do to her. One could argue that if these two conditions had never been met, 'Dark Sakura' would never have been born. But, they did, and she repressed them for years, until finally she snaps, kills Shinji, and realizes, "Hell, this is so much easier than being a goody-two-shoes." She then embraces her darkness. It was a choice she made, but a choice that was weighed down with so much crap the word 'forced' almost applies. Like she was carrying a heavy load, and this was finally a way to have some relief. Your thoughts? |
