I use compatibles all the time
Many printers have a "maintenance counter" built in - basically, you're expected to take it to a service centre who will run a utility (that you can get free off the internet) which resets the counter, and charge you for it
In some, there's a little hatch you can open. Inside is a sponge. you rinse that out, dry it thoroughly, put it back in, and all's well again
