A Little Help...; The Iron Has Landed

Hi all... I'm stuggling a little with my iron - any tips for getting the wax to spread over the card? At the moment, it's tending to just lump itself where the iron first hits the paper and leave streaks... practise makes perfect i suppose.... <_<

I'm no expert, but have heard Steve say that a light hand with the iron is needed. It should glide over the card. I'm sure others can explain better.

Jenny's spot on :) The trick is to learn to virtually not put the iron on the card :D Basically, the object is to let the wax do that and use the iron to spread it "from above", kind of  I assume you're using the glossy card? Other surfaces will tend to just grab the wax and hold on to more than you'd want it to :D

Are you placing enough wax on the iron? When i first tried I was a bit shy with the wax. Also Steve and Jenny are right. you have to almost "hover" over the card, almost. It's like doing feather like strokes with a paint brush. Also I learned your working surface has to be very flat or you won't get good surface coverage.

Hmm.... that could b why then - i'm using the glossy card but maybe i'm putting a tad too much pressure on the iron. thanks guys i'll try to be more generous with the wax as well - "if at first you don't succeed, try again... or else just buy alcohol! :D

A little alcohol helps interpret some of the abstract paintings Rich, but try to remember the iron is hot :rlol:

Hi, I'm new here, but a fairly experienced waxer. The secret is to load your iron, which is set to low or nylon, with just enough wax to cover the base, but not so much that it drips off, then gently glide it slowly over the card. Don't rush it, and don't press too hard. Think that you are ironing your gran's antique silk scarf rather than a bone-dry pair of jeans! :D Take your time and practice! It will come and once you have 'clicked' there will be no stopping you! Hope that's of use. Maria x

Maria I'm so glad you joined and I can't wait to see you work. I'm getting as excited as the day my iron arrived. Hope you don't mind if I ask a question or two as I practice my waxing.
