I was looking through some old stuff today and went over some of the things that had sold this year. I put loads of things into local art shows etc. Most are for amateurs like me, but some have people who paint for a living showing their work alonside us lot! I find them fun to take part in, even if you are taking everything back home again at the end of the weekend, it's still good to get your work seen. I always think that is the main thing...getting it seen....selling is just an added bonus!

They don't always sell, though. Some communities are still a bit conservative where E/A is concerned! But when you get that very first sale, it really spurs you on to do better and better!

Anyway, I thought I'd post one or two that I was really pleased (and sometimes surprised) to sell this year.

First is this:

'The Turn of the Tide'

This is an A4 and was one of the first big waxes I painted. I didn't think it was much good to be honest, but hubby reckoned I should show it, so I did and it sold at the first show I did in May this year. Raised funds for Essex Wildlife Trust with this and another that also sold at the same show.

'The Sorceress'

Another A4. This was one of those pictures that just 'happened' I was intending to do some sort of abstract with ammonites or something but as I waxed this beautiful lady appeared, so I just outlined her with the scriber, and the Sorceress was born! I showed this, but she didn't sell, then an old work collegue of mine came round one day, saw it and said she just HAD to buy it! I'm really pleased she went to a good home!

'Inner Light'

A3

This was in a show that I'd only been told about 2 days before it happened! I had to rush these over really fast to get included, and this was a last-minute 'filler', because I couldn't think what else to bung in! I was amazed that it sold (and to another artist too!) I was pleased with this when I got it framed. It really made it look much more complete!

'The Charm of Making'

Posted Image

Of all my pictures, this is one I have the biggest soft-spot for! It was another of those that just 'happened'. Intended it just to be abstract, but then the wizard appeared, and then the dragon's wings....and it just grew and grew into this! I just sold this at the craft fair last Saturday, and although I had this huge pang when I handed it over to it's new owner, the look on her face as she took it away was worth it all!

The thing is, I don't set out to paint in order to sell. For me, the fun is in the making, but when they DO sell, it's such a bonus and the fact that you know someone likes the picture enough to part with hard-earned cash does make it all worthwhile. It's a great feeling!

So for everyone who is just starting out, never ever give up! Believe in yourself and what you are capable of. Then get out there and show your work off as much as you can! Don't hide it, even if you think it's not that good. Someone somewhere will think it IS!

Above all....HAVE FUN with it!

Maria you are a doll. I just love your attitude about your work. The pieces here are fantastic. I know the real thing had to be ten times more beautiful to see. Thank you so much for spurring me on to make more art. :ta: :ta:

Excellent advice, Maria :thumbup; OK, I'm a bit shy about that aspect and so have most of mine in folders at home but the principle is definitely worth remembering :D
