I have been taking drawing lessons for a couple of weeks now and my last creation I quite liked, so I decided to post it here. It's done with vine charcoal.

Might try the same image in wax, if I feel brave... :r

Excellent drawing, Thea, with wonderful light quality :thumbup; I know how difficult it is to keep charcoal work "clean" :D You might find it valuable to have a look at the drawing lessons on http://www.jonny555.co.uk too - they're challenging and fun :)

Thea,
That is beautiful!
Now, I will admit that I cannot draw.
Even if I drew a "stick man", he would probably
be able to apply for disability!...lol :r :r :r

Your drawing is just exquisite. I bet that it would
be beautiful in wax as well.

Thanks, Steve & Judy!

Judy, I did feel exactly like you, have never been able to draw, and that's why I joined the drawing class. Was terrified at the beginning, having a sort of reputation here of being an ARTIST :groan . I had an excellent teacher. though. So go for it! You will enjoy it!!

All the best,
Thea :hug:

Thea that is a great drawing. You have gotten the light and shadow down very good. I have worked with charcoal before and love the way it looks. But as Steve said it is hard to keep from smudging. Fantastic subject matter too. I love still life. GREAT JOB!!!! :thumbup; :thumbup; :hug:

Isn't it lovely just to sometimes sit and sketch instead of getting out all the other art equipment? This is a really good drawing. I'm not a strong sketcher, being someone who never really had any lessons other than what I was taught in school, I prefer to paint really, so I bow to those who can draw at this level! This is lovely! Well done and good luck with the rest of your lessons! Maria x

id love to be able to draw, but sadly i an useless at still life. I think alot of us never get taught to draw at school, I know I wish I had learnt!

I go to adult education classes in pottery and ceramics, I seem to be able to make with my hands what I can see in my minds eye, I never quite manage to get down on paper what I can see with my eyes! (if you know what I mean!)

I still draw like a 5yearold! That was really clear, I especially liked the little acorns on the lid. If you can achieve that after 2 lessons, we should be in for some real treats. :thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup;

:thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup; Wonderful drawing Thea. It is surprising what talents we have hidden from ourselves.

I read in the book called "Drawing on the right side of the brain" that the reason adult people still draw childlike drawings is because as a child they encountered negative responses to their drawings from those that should have known better.

It just goes to show that negative comments on other peoples paintings and drawings really does stifle and stunt artistic talents. Maybe the person who made the coment on Twinthings painting today will realise that some day!
But I wouldn't hold my breath :r :r :r
I am thankful my parents and siblings were all encouraging individuals. :thumbup;

One of the excercises in the book told you to turn the object you plan to draw upside down, this in effect turns off the reasoning left side of the brain from the creative right side of the brain. By turning the object upside down to draw, you actually get a far better representaion of the object and feel more confident about drawing. This helps to retrain your thought on how you draw.
I reccomend you try this for yourself. I have.
But one word of warning, It doesn't work with a vase of flowers! :r :r :r
