I did a craft fair today. Was pretty steady during the morning. Lots of kids had a go with the iron and I sold a few unframed pictures, so I was content. The afternoon was a tad quiet so I had time to sit and concentrate a bit more and ended up doing about three A5 pictures, two tissue transfers (they are selling well at the fairs so far!) and one for ebay, which is the one I'v posted in my gallery, though to make it easier, I'll bung it on here too!![]() What can I say.....people love dragons! Actually, Jo, it was only quiet for the last hour or so, which wasn't surprising as it was in a small village. I did OK though and made a small profit, so I'm not complaining. For me, it's a day out and who can turn their nose up at having a whole day to sit and wax while their hubby does all the dust bunny removal processes? (sorry for using the H word, Steve!) Maria x

Maria I think you are having a love affair with dragons. Your work on this subject is so exacting...like it comes naturally.. Kudos to you! Are you able to sell on ebay? I've heard it is just too competitive...glad you won't starve. We would miss you here. Verlie

Thanks Verlie. The little A5s are selling quite well on ebay as it happens. Dragons and fairies seem very popular! This one now has bids on it, as does another, and I just sold one today. Obviously, I'm not expectng millions (I wish!) but if someone wants to pay hard-earned cash for a little dragon, who am I to argue?
I suppose I have done fairly well since changing to E/A. I have sold about 20 big framed pictures at various exhibitions this year, the rest have all been small unframed stuff at craft fairs and in the 'shop'. I have to say, I have more pictures that DON'T sell, but for me, the pleasure is in creating them. Getting them into exhibitions is my main goal, anything else is a bonus. I don't expect I'll ever make the Tate, but then I don't aspire to that. Just give me some wax and an iron and I'm happy! Maria x

Maria thanks for all the info...I sold a 4x5 feet silk painting from a Museum art exhibit-competition for a thousand dollars...don't think that would happen twice but I was sailing in the clouds that I'd finally 'arrived' in the Artstream' ! My conclusions after that was to realize that I make art because I have to, need to...like brushing my teeth.. can't not do it or I suffer emotionally. Selling is a plus but it sure isn't everything, eh? Of course I've had my share of those 'others' who say art is just passing playtime and not a serious career. You know before i went to cllege to study art I was painting on sawblades with oils...thought myself 'good enough" to enter my occuption as artist when I conversed with new folks.... They seemed jolted and moved away from me abruptly. Didn't understand the why of that reaction til college and found out we are supposed to be crazy and live a Bohemian lifestyle!!! Well I have lived Bohemian but not crazy....yet. In fact it is my reason to remain sane throughout a horrendous abusive life and I am Proud to be called an artist today....the money is sure nice though. You've done very well. I can count on both hands how many of my college friends are earning income through art today...most don't even make art anymore. It is the heart that makes art not the education. I am so happy for you to be selling your work and it is worth so much more than we could ever receive in dollars and cents. Verlie

A beautiful, true statement, Verlie I've always believed that implicitly. Our son Reuben has been an artist since early childhood. When options for further education were being considered, he wasn't impressed with going to art school. He wanted the independence of thought and technique that he'd always enjoyed. I think there was an instinctive rejection of taking a direction that might have robbed him of that
Don't get me wrong, I have no more onjection to a person emerging from the system than from a raw, untrained talent. Each person has to choose their own path - all I ask is that everybody respects the abilities and choices others make
If I believed in people only being able to do that which they had learnt formally, then I would never have done what I have in life, and I certainly wouldn't have started CraftBoard

Steve, Verlie....couldn't have put it better myself! I just do what I do really. If people like it enough to buy it, that's brilliant, if they don't like it, they can look away! Like you Verlie...I get the DTs if I don't paint for a while! It's like a really good drug, without all the nasty side-effects! (Well...apart from she-who-must-never-be-mentioned! )Maria x |

Yeh Maria and Steve, we think very nuch alike and guess that's why we call this the 'lighter' side? Steve I had a friend (still do) fromJapan who went to college with me. She was fantastic in skill and individuality. Her momtold her while she was in Japan that it was senseless to pursue art when their whole country already had 'too many' great artists. That mom was sure she couldn't do better than the rest and after a year she left school, her confidence waning. SHE is married two kids and 'dying' from not making art. I am still in touch and she tries to get going, but...family takes precedence. Anyway she didn't want to be told ho to make art by anyone else and feared the instuctors were steering her in their direction. I can completely understand your son's thinking. This would make a good topic for everyone, you think? Since we so inspire each other on to greater works. Verlie

I certainly used to suffer more migraines when I wasn't writing (my first love), years back, but I eventually got passed that as Life intervened too often to permit the intense self-indulgence/separation that that required. Now I often have long periods of non-creativity, but that's usually more health related than anything
