I am invited to hold a workshop at a cub scout meeting (is that the right word :ph43r: ??) at the end of the month. I thought to give them a choice of things to do: bookmarks, decorated with stickers, an easy Christmas card (cut-out aperture of candle shape with Encaustic piece behind, or waxing on a stamp decorated card. Well, what do you think? Of course the Dragon won hands down I posted the three options in my Gallery. Thea

I don't know about "meeting", Thea - more like "terrorist conclave" ![]() Those pics are fabulous! I must admit that, unexpectedly for me, I love the encaustics with stickers - very effective indeed!! And the candles work really well! Excellent work all round

so much for sharing. I loved all of them. The dragon is awesome. I can see why that was voted in. I have been a past scout leader of the Cubs and Brownies and Girl Scouts. I can see why they loved the dragon. Yes Steve sometimes it is almost like a terrorist conclave. To keep the busy learning and having fun while maintaining your sanity can be a big job. I loved every minute of it though. Even taught an easy firestarter trick using egg cartons, parifin and dryer lint. Had all the guy leaders amazed. Good luck Thea, you will do great.

you will have fun! my daughter goes to beavers which is the age below the cubs and its a riot! but they always come home with something they have made so the leaders do have some control over them! dont forget that some of them have a very short attention span but they will probably love the idea that the iron is hot and there for slightly dangerous!
let us know how it goes! keep on ironswinging! catherine. |

Thea, you're a real deardevil do you have any reinforcement? Seriously: how old are the kids and how many of them? I love the bookmarks very much but I can see way the kids chose the dragon. |

Loved them all! Great bookmarks.....no need to state what I think of the dragons...the love affair continues! I think all thse kinds of things show just how versatile E/A is. The stickers are a great idea for things like quick cards etc and keeps kids interest held for ages. Can't be bad! Mind you.....I'd run a mile rather than face all those kids....but then, I'm a coward! Maria x

The DRAGON..The DRAGON...The Dragon... Thea it is so gracious of you to commit your time to these kids. When I was young I went to a 'church club' where we made something each week... I will never forget the woman who was so kind to me. She was the one who gave me my first sense of self-worth as a child. Home was then ten kids of which nine were brothers and my mom was busy, my dad abused me and was an alcoholic....Maybe you will touch a child's heart in some small way and they will never forget your kindness. Thank you,Verlie. It must have been very hard for you if you had to get your self-esteem as a child from a stranger, instead of your own parents. In your honour I will do my very, very best to make this a great experience for the kids. We tend to forget how fortunate we are sometimes. With warm greetings and great respect, Thea |

I know that you will be awsome. Verlie , we will have to talk sometime about your dad and my mom. It sounds like they were a pair. I know exactly what you were going through and my thoughts are with you. It took a long time for me to come to terms with my past. Hope you are doing okay cause you are awesome!

Yes Carol I am still discovering the after effects of my childhood ...but, it is the former struggles that get 'released' through my work. Some things I don't understand and that's okay because the artwork always speaks volumes.. Thank you. Verlie

Heehee good luck!! I am sure you will do well. if we dont' hear from you for awhile, I'll come untie you.. Verlie isnt' it amazing how art and creativity can heal so many wounds. It may be silly but I look at things like petroglyphs and cave paintings and I think those people lived such a harsh existence and yet someone still took the time to create. Art is really the medicine for human suffering isn't it.

You're right Virginia, art is therapy. I heard about a university study once where they concluded that the act of coloring paces the whole body rythms and so it's therapeutic. I used to not work when upset and then realized that to put the frustration down...even if I threw it out...was the way to get beyond the emotion. I t worked. Verlie

No, they were cave graffitti vandals that became artists by mistake! Thea, good luck with your cub scouts, I was a unit helper with the brownies a few years ago when Rach and Vikki were of that age. I really enjoyed it all so muc, i did it for 7 years.Kids that age are eager to learn and they are better behaved because they want to be there by choice also. You'll be fine with the dragons.(and the stamps will go down well also) Verlie, I was the middle of 9 children! We used to have a saying; " Whoever was first up, was best dressed" but I guess there was more girls in our family than yours. Poppy.

Poppy that's funny...First was my brother then me then eight brothers in a row and finally when I was thirteen I began to acquire sisters three in all. My youngest sister is 5 months older than my oldest daughter. It was so strange being pregnant the same time as my mom. Did you like being in such a large family? I was spoiled somedays, but mostly my parents 'had so many children they didn't know what to do'. Verlie

Me and mags run a local parent and toddler group, the children range from birth to 4years, we oftern try to do little crafty things, limited by age, we find the best is cutting and glueing and decortating boxes with sequins...anything with glue is most popular! but we struggle because sooo few of the mums will join in with there children! its hard sat at a table with 6 toddlers all trying to get your attention, glueing eachother to the paper! lol some of the older ones even say they love doing it cause mummy wont let them at home! good luck with the cubs thea! im sure they will love it! xx |

If Harry Potter is as big in Canada as it is here in the UK - they are all into dragons and mystical creatures. The quicker they get a result - the better, so the cards will go down a treat. I showed a couple of Kasi's school friends how to do EA and they took away their artwork. I thought they probably forgotten about it next day. But - bless - one of the boys granddad died a couple of weeks later and he told me he had gone to the vicar and asked if he could put his card in his granddads coffin to go with him to heaven. He did just that. So although they may have the attention span of a goldfish at that age - it's surprising how much pride they take in doing something so unique and amazing. You'll be their hero for the week I reckon......Have a brilliant time.

Terry, that's brillant! In the old days, in Egypt, people swatted Encaustic paintings with the image of the deceased in with the mummies wrappings. These Mummie Portaits, as they are called can still be admired today. So the Encaustic card of this little boy may surprise some future archealogist.... Thea
