You may have realised by now I do like my crafts to produce something nice for next to no cost, so how about these? We only have plain white switches here so I though I'd jazz them up a little. I made little boxes with room to spare to fit over the switch plates from stiff card and then gave a coup[le of coats of dark brown acrylic paint. I then applied my cut outs from calendars, magazines, etc. Lots of layers of varnish or white glue and then removed the screws from the switches and hey presto! The white switch part looked a bit ugly so I cut and glued on some gold corrugated card. The white edges are very obvious in the photo, but they don't show up in real life. I have one more to do for the sitting room, colour scheme a bit different, so I might choose leafy design or maybe geometric. Thanks for looking ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Way "Kewl"!...lol I really like the one with the sunflowers. It would go just perfect with a window I have! DH gets a little touchy about me messin' with the electrical plates and outlets. He thinks he owns them!...lol Very nice and creative! Judi |

Beautiful idea, Carol We tend to go for quite plain here, so I guess decorative covers would look a little odd
but they certainly have impact
Just one reminder - be careful about opening switches
(This from the man who's had more electric shocks than a power station

They are really neat Carol. I have some covers that would benefit from that. Steve are you telling us you have had a shock or two in your life? Literally? You must be careful. The one thing dad taught me at an early age was to rewire lamps, switches, and change fuses or repair almost anything. He said that I shouldn't rely on a hubby that would be around when something like that was needed. Boy if he had only known that some years later I would marry a guy that was gone in the semi all of the time!! You are right though, people should be careful with electricity.

Carol your Dad sounds like mine. He taught me to use tools and how to fix lamps and cords and change my oil in my car and change a flat. He showed me how to cut wood and make things. I'm so glad he did, because I had many years when I lived by myself and I needed all those skills. I was one of those girls that thought it was strange that other girls didn't know how to do all those things. I think it is good for the softer gender to learn to take care of themselves. Also my Mom taught my brother how to cook and wash clothes and clean up dust bunnies. So he was a multi tasker too. Our parents believed in teaching use kids everything they could.

Carol, I used to work for our local electricity company
I've been getting shocks for years One was really funny, as my Mum was there at the time and, as I was launched backwards (it was a high tension lead) she just slid a chair across so that I landed on that instead of the floor It's never really worried me as I've always carried a massive static charge and used to give other people shocks if they got too close

at Steve! Thanks for your concern Steve, but I too am rather a useful lady - these switches were wired by me in the first place when we built the house 20 something yrs ago! HOWEVER! slapped wrists for me - sorry everybody, it was inexcusable of me not to mention the potential danger, should anybody choose to try this themselves. Once again Steve is there watching over us and now keeping us safe as well!!!

Totally right Carol, we shouldn't be too humorous with this. Yup Mardar, Pat jokes around and says I can wire, weld, cut and nail with the best of them. He taught me to do everything from change oil to checking for wheel bearings going out in the big mail truck tires. It doesn't hurt a thing for people to know any and all things they want to learn. My son, Ken, cooks like a dream and dad does all except bills and paper work. Mom always did that so I am doing it now and teaching him the basics. Steve, I would say your mom was a good catcher! I bet that would have made a good video.

What Steve hasn't said is: We had thrown the main switch where the power came in, and he was putting the new socket under a cupboard in a corner. Should be too dark to work, yeah. Until he launched across the kitchen NONE of us had noticed he could see what he was doing because the kitchen light was still on!!!!!!!! |

The fact that I'd thrown the mains switch really didn't impress me an awful lot
Of course, I should have had an inkling, as I was using an electric drill, too ![]() Steve |
