Daunted....

OK, so I have to admit it - I'm daunted :D Jenny, unknown to me, took the album containing all my A6 encaustics to work today. Her new boss liked them, apparently, and has now asked me to do one for him  He wants an A4 landscape, with mountains and lake, and vividly coloured flowers (he's from Ghana and strong, bright colours are very much the norm, apparently). Now, I've never done anything to order in wax and I'm terrified! :o In fact, every time I've had a plan for a pic, it's usually turned out to be something entirely different :r :r And as for getting the bright colours, that's got me really worried!

Well, look on it as a challenge. Just think about what you'd like to do beforehand, then just go for it! Sounds a fairly easy subject, though. Why not browse the Internet for African photos of the kind of landscapes they have to gain a bit of inspiration?

If it's any consolation, the most bizarre commission I have had was for a lady who wanted an A3 painting for her mother and step-father's first wedding anniversary. It had to be a pagan theme, with both zodiac signs (one was saggitarius and the other a libran) and had to have a guitar in it, and a pig, because her mother collected pigs!

Amazingly, I managed it and they were well-pleased!

I'm sure, if you take your time, you'll come up with something wonderful, and this will be the first of many more commissions!

Got it in one, Catherine! Apparently the 'step-dad' was a guitarist. I modelled the figure in this on a musician friend of mine.

I'm afraid it's not a very good scan though.

The boss said, soon after he started, that he was looking for an unusual picture for his room. Something that people would say " How is that done?". I said all inocent like, "You'll need encaustic then......". The inevitable reply was "What's that?" I'm sure you all know the rest !!!! :r
So, today I took the album in and showed him. He seemed impressed, but today was a bad day (433 prescriptions) to try to converse with any level of sanity.

Steve , i'm sure you'll manage admirably. :thumbup; If the one you did on canvas is anything to go by, so much more difficult to do. You'll walk it! :art: :sold: :congrats:

Well done Steve.

Of all the advice I can offer, I'd say to try and visualise before laying the iron/stylus down.

Have you considered 'roughing up' on PSP, so you have a clear outline on what you want.. (as multiple undo's and messing with paths, etc on screen are easier than correcting things on card)

And if possible, having that visible on screen / printout before freehanding.

I find that useful.

Anyway, I know you'll do well, and he'll be incredibly happy with the fantastic artwork you're sure to provide.

x

Col!

Col, I'd have to be able to do graphics on a PC first ;) Never have been able to draw/paint with a mouse  If it's not a standard shape, I'm lost :r
