Hello All

Here's my latest, created using just the stylus.
It started off as just a freehand pencil sketch from memory (no reference material)

Anyway, without further ado, here's

:ta: :blush: Thankyou everyone! :blush: :ta:

I've seen dragons used many times before in encaustics, and kind of wanted to go for a slightly different approach, that of a close up.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a sketch artist, even my stick figures give me splinters. So I'm really happy that this turned out as well as it did.

Jinny:
He's an A6. Although to be honest, I really ought to pick up some A5 or even A4 now, as it'd have been much easier in a larger scale.. (ok, it would have taken longer, but I could have added much more detail) Some of the hardest bits were the teeth, and the right eyelid, which in reality left about 1.5mm space to colour, and all of my stylus tips were too thick.

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment though, I really went for bright and bold.. and for you to say it's stunning, well that just made my day! :hug:

John:
LOL,.. Thanks! :blush: - It took a while I admit,but not as long as it looks. (see reply to Catherine) I really enjoyed every second, and time flew as it was so engrossing.

Thank you so much for the rating, you'd be surprised how much area you can fill with the stylus once you put your mind to it. As for the advice, I'll keep that in mind for future posts :r

Jinny#2:
:lolol: :lolol: :lolol: Oh how true those words are...

Catherine:
:hug: Awww, thanks for that,.. He took me 7 hours in total. I started him at 11:30pm last night, then what seemed like an hour later (which was really 5 hours later @ 4:30am) I decided that the birds were ruining my concentration, so went to bed.. I then did another 2 hours earlier to finish the shading and reinforce the outlines.

I know that sounds like a marathon huge amount of time,.. but it really was so engrossing that it really feels like a couple hours max, and time I really enjoyed as well.

Ros:
Thanks once again. I must admit that I'm rather proud of him, and am really pleased that others like him too. I really don't think I can step away from the stylus just yet, as each thing I do with it seems to uncover different techniques and effects..

It's like I cannot do anything for a week or so, and then something like this springs out of nowhere... :ice:

What talent!
What patience too, but certainly worth it looking at this wonderful result.
7 hours though? wow!
I only use my stylus when I have to really but you've certainly found the way with yours.
I'll look forward to an order for bigger card then, shall I?
As you say, it'll be easier to get detail if you go larger and it won't take that much longer because you won't struggle so much with the small bits.

I think 7 hours is pretty good going considering it's only with the stylus....well done Col :thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup;

It took me 7 hours to get the wax off my hands....out of my hair....out of my ears....etc etc when I'd finished mine :r

Great work though Col....can't wait to see more.

Fabulous, Col :art: I like the stylus, but seven hours? :eek: :faint: :r

As you asked for suggestions - perhaps a few chinese/japanese characters, in gold, quite small, on the mount? :unsure: I think that could put a final flourish to a superb painting :thumbup;

Maria:
Thank you so much for your wonderful comments Maria.

I too think that this is probably the best thing I've done so far, and really couldn't imagine being without my trusty stylus now.

I definately think my 'style' will be stylus heavy with occasional iron work instead of the other way around, which I think is pretty much the opposite of the norm,..
(some things never change, eh! ;))

As for size, he's only an A6,. though I will be looking to go to larger card in the future as I really think that'll make it easier in the log run. :huggy:

Barry:
:D Thanks for that Barry. If it's talent, it's been well hidden until this piece :rolleyes:
I know it sounds odd, but really those 7 hours seemed like about 2 as it was so engrossing getting the waxes to mix in the right quantities to get the exact right shade, and teasing the colours in the directions I wanted them to go..

I'll go see whether the piggy bank will allow me any larger cards, and if I get lucky an order might be heading your way. :)

Jen:
Thank you so much! - You really do need to sort out some sort of timeshare agreement with Jinnies iron and stylus,.. I'm sure you'd soon have your own set within a day or so. It's so addictive!

I'm so Glad you like him,.. The textures really do work on this one, don't they. :hug:

Jinny#3:
LOL! - Yeah, you and Terry were right all along about the stylus,.. and to think I didn't quite see how the stylus 'fitted in' to Encaustic art,... :blink: You're right, He would look mighty handsome as a tattoo..

If you decide to get it done, pls post pics. :)

John:
:r :r Yeah, I'm still finding dragon scales stuck to the walls and everything. I've an idea for the next one,.. Similar, but quite different once again...

At this rate 'Horizon' may have to wait a while.. :)

Steve:
I might just do that Steve, if I were to do that, I'd probably have the word 'Tempest' for that is his name,.. but knowing my luck, and the dodgy translations you get on 'the net' it'd probably end up saying 'beautiful earwax' or something. :r

I'm absolutely amazed by this Colin, I really don't know how you've done this and only had the stylus five minutes - you've really found your niche here - not often I'm gobsmacked - but it's gorgeous. Very very well done....

(May have took you 7 hours to paint it - it's taken me 7 hours to read all the lovely comments.....) Gosh, it was worth it though...... I'm really chuffed for you.... :thumbup; :thumbup; :wave:

LOL Terry!

Awww! Thanks Terry. I'll treasure your gobsmakedness forever!

You know when sometimes you sit down, and something pops into your head that seems so simple and logical that you just have to draw it? Well that's what happened here.

The shading and colour scheme just seemed 'right' and I didn't have to question whether the background should be red or blue,.. it's almost as if it seemed natural.

It's the first time I've sat down and 'doodled' and then sat there and created it in EA.. Though now i know the process, I hope that that will be something that comes easilly from now on.

Previously, pretty much everything I've done has been thought of as I'm painting. No planning, just going with the flow. That's fine, but now I realise that planning has it's place too. And that planning ahead allows much more complicated things to be done more easilly.

I never took art at school, so although that might seem obvious to others, it's only really just hit me. :rolleyes:

I can see exactly what my next one will be even now,.. It's just getting it right in my head, and then putting pencil to paper, and wax to card.

:hug:

Col, if there's one thing I've learnt, having been involved in art forums for quite a while, now, it's that there are distinct disadvantages to formal art training!

First, art lessons in school are frequently whee people acquire the false notion that they can't "do" art :( Unfeeling, uncaring teachers or mockery from "naturals" often damage our confidence enormously.

Second, while an understanding of techniques and motivations behind the works of other artists is all very well, many tutors seem to get bogged down in "guiding" students along a particular path, because of either personal preferences, or current fashion, regardless of the suitability to the student! I've almost wept on seeing a wonderful "natural" who's producing stunning "traditional" art emerging from art college with the ability to do little more than mimic the current favourites! Why surrender individuality? It's got to be some kind of indoctrination! :(

Third, creativity is an intrinsic component of the human animal. We create first for ourselves, secondly for our audience, only very distantly thirdly for our artistic peers, and (even more distantly) fourthly for art critics. Art "training" often perverts that and turns it on its head, persuading students that acceptance by our peers and critics is more important than art! :angry:

If you want to learn more about art, look for courses/art web sites that teach more about techniques than anything else, and remember the golden rule that applies to everything in Life: "Rules are made to be broken!" One of the great things about encaustic is the fact that there are no real rules at all :thumbup;

I think I've said before that we really don't need to be taught as much as we think we do! For example: Perspective - we deal with it every day, knowing what's right and what isn't. And art allows us to play with that, or even break the rules if we want to. If you have eyes to observe the world around you, then you can recreate it in art, or as much of it as you wish to. :) The things we need to learn consist mainly of how to mix colours effectively and what tools to use to achieve certain effects, and a lot of that can be learnt by playing around! :thumbup;

Oops! :blush: Sorry, I just get upset when folk infer that they are lacking something because they didn't learn it "legitimately" :D

One 'chill pill' for Steve please,.. :r :r

I know what you mean Steve, and I agree wholeheartedly. I didn't mean to infer that I was lacking anything by saying that, more that perhaps something obvious to others had just come as a revelation to me.

x

Col!

(p.s. if those 'chill pills' are any good, let me know as I could do with a few myself sometimes :D)
