My mother in law rang me last night, she has been doing some EA and purchased stamps and pad, she created her picture and then put her castle in the middle with the stamp pad, but she says that she should have stamped her card first and them waxed over it, how can this be done if you dont know what the picture is going to be, also do you have to seal the stamp? I have tried stamping with the wax cos I didnt have a pad and it doesnt show up? seems to dry before I get it in the right place! lol Sorry if these are tedious questions... Thanks for any help Sallyx |

Using stamps is a quick and easy way to get images onto an encaustic painting. You can also use clip art as well and the method is really the same. All you need to do is stamp the image (or print it) onto the card BEFORE you wax. You must let it dry thoroughly (overnight preferably) before you commence waxing. First coat the image with a layer of clear wax, then add the colours round it, building up the picture as you go. It's true that you never know how it may turn out when you start, but as the colours and textures go on the picture will soon grow. Keep opaque waxes such as white away from the image though, as they will obscure it. Dilute colours with clear wax to make them more see-through. It's fun to experiment, and even if you don't have any rubber stamps, you could always use a permanent marker pen to draw the image on. Again, let it dry well before you wax over it. Another way of adding pictures is to use stickers or temporary tattoos. These are added after waxing and then sealed over using an acrylic sealant to hold them in place. Hope that helps. Maria x |

Thank You Maria I will give it a go and hopefully upload my results. I did quite a bot of EA yesterday but wasnt very happy with it, I kept doing my swipe to start and some of them were looking fab and then I just got lost and didnt really know what to do with them. They seem to be missing something.... I am absolutely rubbish at drawing so when I attempt to put in something (castle, flowers), they just look really pooh!!!!! I think I had a bad day yesterday and need to rethink and start again! Thanks for yor help Sallyx |

I too have had days like that and the best thing to do is move away from it and leave it a little while(says she whos waxes have been sitting on her table for days) and wait for a little inspration You could look at books or the net and sometimes inspiration comes when you least expect it........you could also try listening to calming music and see how it makes you feel just a few ideas hugs |

Hi Sally - once you've stamped a design - if the foreground isn't what you want - just keep playing with the iron (usually best if only 1 or 2 colours are used, otherwise you end up mud wrestling) till it is. Or wipe wax off and start again - stamp will always stay imprinted. I put a tip for anyone not confident about drawing (there are lots more tips here too) if you go to Tips Tricks and Techniques and have a peek at silhouette flowers - ever so simple ........ You can also scratch out any outline you trace onto your design, and fill in the blank space left with stylus and wax.... Let us know how you get on Love x

Hi Sally, another tip is to make sure that the stamped unicorn/wizard/tree doesnt "float" in the middle of the painting, unless its a whale of course!! try adding a little shadeing underneath, say a path or grass at the bottom of a tree, that sort of thing. I have also drawn on the top of the wax with a big thick perminent black marker. experiment, and enjoy your waxing, remember, there is no right or wrong way with encaustic. magz

Hi Sally we all have days ( or weeks in my case ) where things just dont go as planned. I use pictures printed onto the card first or tempory tattoos sometimes. They are quite a few examples on my website Sylphlords Web Site Some of the black silloulettes have been printed first, some drawn freehand with black wax. Their are also some tattoos on there. Good luck and enjoy it

I've never tried stamping with EA, but do stamp and emboss, so thanks for asking the question Sally and thanks for all the tips.
