I made a basic vase and buscuit fired it, brought it home, put it in a metal bucket with newspaper, and some straw, and set fire to it! ( never play with matches kids!) :o

when it was cool I brushed it off and polished it with clear shoe polish....I dint have any bees wax, which is the best stuff to use!

the smoke gives the pottery a wonderful warm brown grey colour which is perminant, to make the stripes I had put some masking tape on before burning, the polish leaves it with a lovely luster, and shall we say, and intresting aroma! I love smoked pots, when ever I see any in a gallery I cant resist sniffing them!
if you look close you will see the texture on the pot, I rolled the clay on one of my daughters cloth nappies that I sound in the cupboard! you can see the stiches and the seams! ( and yes, it was a lovely clean nappy!)
I am going to try it with some more pots over the next few weeks,

this pot by the way, now lives on my desk with my pens in it, my 7 year old said it looked like a zebra's ear, so thats what its called.

ZEBRA'S EAR.

this small plate was decorated with grey and white slip, buscuit fired and then clear glazed! Im very fond of this one as it reminds me of encaustic!
