Working On Canvas Again; Big Fantasy Flowers

Got a bit carried away yesterday.......
Ages ago, I bought some A3 size canvas boards and also some huge box canvases.
Tried a sort of transfer technique to get some colour on a canvas board, ended up moving the colour a lot too with various tools and ended up with this which I quite like.

Iwanted to attempt a couple of large box canvases though and had an idea of using the above colours as the central part of flowers.

This was the result;
Fantasy Flowers
this canvas for this was 120x80cm but the flowers still weren't able to be large enough to give me as much scope as I would have liked to develop their centres.
I'm going to enter it into the Colchester Art Society show to see if they'll select it for hanging in their exhibition at the Institute in Colchester in July.

I have bought one canvas which is twice that size but don't know if my arms are long enough to reach the middle!

what do you use to cover the canvas barry? do you do a base coat of acrylic paint? Ive only attempted small canvas boards but they take up so much wax! this one of yours is fantastic, I love the soft colours..... :thumbup;

I've bought preprimed canvases, therfore I'm not sure what the primer is but it's supposed to be universal, so I've just gone straight on with wax.

You do still lose some wax into the canvas but that 120x80 only used up about 2 full blocks to paint the whole surface and edges; to do that I used a paint 4" sponge roller, loaded from the hotplate and then had paint stripper heatgun in left hand to warm the canvas.

Barry great work, good luck with the exhibition.

I know exactly what you are saying about arms not being long enough??
Maria laughs at me when I say i'll probably get wax all over my boobs doing that size canvas??? :r :r :r

Good grief Barry - that's bigger than my living room :o

I love the magical atmosphere of the first, and the colours are beautifully blended together. You couldn't imagine so many different colours could produce such harmony, but they sure do here.....

The second is just SPECTACULAR :thumbup; :thumbup; :nw:

Love x :wave:

:o STUNNING!

I love the first one.....is that a strange little creature in the foreground that I can see?

I'm sure you'll do really well with both of these.

Not done anything on canvas for a while. It takes so much more wax for one thing.

Catherine, I usually put a layer of clear wax over the canvas first which does act as a barrier to prevent the coloured wax getting absorbed too much.

I have a very large box canvas sitting here waiting for me to do something with it. I think you might just have spurred me on, Barry! :lol:

Mind you...I have a rather special A3 on the go at the moment which will take a bit more work before it's ready, so the canvas will have to wait it's turn! Watch this space! :P

Best of luck with the exhibitions!

:faint: Superb work, Barry :art: :nw2: I got through enough wax on a small canvas :eek: Mind you, I didn't use hot air, so maybe that's a key ;) I love the A3 particularly, but the flowers are fantastic too :thumbup;

Hope all goes well with the exhibition submissions :thumbup;

I'm afraid I've been in "wax conservation" mode lately, but hope I'll be able to acquire some more blocks soon so I can get back to fun and exploration :thumbup;

Steve :)

:thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup; Both pieces are excellent Barry, but my favourite is the first! I saw the figure too, looks like it's stood in the water holding a long twig! This is really surreal and I agree with Jinny, it has a very calming effect! :huggy: :love: Sylvia
