I'm feeling quite excited! I was recently contacted by an artist who lives not all that far away from me. She has her own studio and teaches oil painting. She was very keen to try encaustic wax and asked whether I would agree to teaching her on a one-to-one basis, so I thought about it and decided that I would. This is the result of our afternoon! Sue Warne Anyway, she was so impressed that she has asked me if I would be willing to teach it at her classes as an extra to what she is already doing. Naturally, I have jumped at the chance! The first class is on August 6th in the village hall at Capel-St-Mary, Suffolk from 12-6. My sessions will run for 2 hours each: 12pm - 2pm and 2.30pm - 5.30pm. There is room for 4 pupils at each session and the cost is £30 per person. For that, each student will get an indepth lesson on all the basic techniques including working with hot-air, and the use of the hotplate. If you know of anyone who might be interested who lives in the area please pm me, or direct them to my website (link is on my signature at the botom of this post) and they can e-mail me there. I'm really keen to get this off the ground, so any help getting me started would be much appreciated! Maria x |

Hello Maria, That's great Maria and exciting, as you say! Sue contacted me yesterday for info on supplies so thanks for recommending me so highly! If you're only doing 2 hours per session, I, personally, would only get through iron techniques (possibly a little stylus demo at the end if people want it. ) I had one young lady here for a lesson yesterday; she'd already done some at home and we did 2.5 hours but we still only got through basic iron work. once you start having more than one person, it's surprising how much longer things can take too as you might have to flit from one to another in turn (you'll quite often find that you spend far longer with one person in a group than others either because they ask for more help and are really keen or conversely, they just can't get the hang of it at all! So my advice would be to use hot air/hotplate for a different class and that might result in repeat bookings. You ought to consider insurance too but your host might have cover already which may extend to you. If you do seek insurance, ask me (or other crafters) for advice. |

That is great news, you must be so excited. Good advice from Barry too, I only taught Teabag folding so not much danger there (except from the hot tea we drank!), but the Rural are covered by their insurance.Hope you get lots of interested people , so the classes continue.

Excellent stuff Maria As you say very exciting. I would have to agree with Barry and suggest you save ''advanced'' techniques - such as hot air work, or the hotplate, for a second session. It will give people something to look forward to, and a chance to practice iron work before coming back |

Thank-you for that advice Barry! Never thought of that! I'm glad Sue contacted you. She's a lovely lady, a fantastic artist, and we hit it off straight away! I'll put all your advice to her and see what she thinks. I'm very excited, but it's all happened so very fast I am working hard to keep my feet on solid ground! Maria x |

Wonderful wonderful news Maria Well done! I have heard of Sue, just think how she discribed you in the blurb, "A well established Encaustic Wax Artist" That is fantastic. I agree with Barry, to keep the other advanced techniques for a different session. That's not to say you cannot do a few mins demo at the end to whet their appette though? We waxer's tend to overlook the fact that it is only through repeated experience that we have come to do Encaustic so esily and regard it as being very 'easy' . We forget all the faffing about we had to do to get to the stage where when we demonstrate it, it looks too easy. That is your skill in making it look that way. Good luck Maria. Poppy

Sally.....I can't wait to see your first fairy! I must admit that when she first asked me to teach her, I thought she would go on to teach EA herself! But when Sue then asked me to go in on her sessions, well it was just too good to turn down! I just feel that this is 'right', somehow and I always act on my instincts! All I need now though, is students! Maria x |

Hi.....I can see from my web statistics I had received a few hits from this forum. So I thought I'd take a look to investigate and discovered Maria's posting. I have been seeking an encaustic lesson for a while, but being the fussy type, I was holding out till I found someone who was experienced in controlling the wax to a certain extent. I have to say Maria, you are an absolute natural at teaching, I can't believe just how much we covered in just 2 hours. You ticked all my boxes. Sometimes fate intervenes in a strange way and I think it is no coincidence that our locations are close. I am pleased to be able to offer my own students another arty option, knowing they are in expert hands and I hope this will lead to even bigger and better things for you in the future. Thankyou for the experience. Regards, Sue |
