Coptic Book Binding

This is a new (to me) craft I have just had a go at. Coptic book making. This is stitched using waxed linen thread. It is not fancy, but I was very pleased with how it turned out. The book signatures are just plain printer paper and the covers are some strong cardboard covered with some old looking paper. It only took me about an hour to complete it. I love how it lays flat when open and will make a great journal. I want to make some more of these using some fancy paper and sturdier covers to use as art books. What do you all think. :D

Hi Mardar

I love your new journal, not seen anything like it before, and the possibilities are endless with it, you could do scarpbooks, albums, diaries, anything, they would make great gifts and could be personalised. The tut has been added to my favs :ta:

Looking forward to seeing your next design :thumbup;

Looks lovely. Very intrigued by the title, as Coptic is the branch of Christiantity in Ethipia, where my parents used to live. And has a different Xmas day to us, which was great, as mum and dad could give their housemaid and gardener their Xmas orff, without having to wash up from their own Xmas dinner :-D

Apologies for primitive smilies, ca't use the panel from this computer

Thank you everyone. :hug: :hug:

Kim the style of book is called Coptic because the Coptic's from Africa were the first to make this sewn style of book. It is probably the first time books were actually made this way (Sewn). It is indeed an ancient art. That is what really drew me to this style of book. Everything old (or ancient ) truly is new again. :D :hug:

That's really interesting, I always like to do stuff like that and imagine the first person who did it so long ago and how pleased they must have been!

It is cool to think that books were made this way as far back as 300 AD and here we are still talking about and rediscovering these skills. It's nice to know these things haven't been lost to time. :thumbup;

Wow how wonderful and it looks so good! Great Job! :thumbup;

Glad you posted a website on how to do this just the other day on another board I go to one lady posted a post about how she keeps all her notes and stuff from college in binders and that the big binders she purchases doesn't have enough room to hold all her notes. She is in medical school on her way to becoming a doctor.

I'm going to send her this website that you posted and maybe by making her own binders she would be able to hold more notes. :D :thumbup;
