Hi everyone, does anyone know how to get rid of aphids on roses without using pesticides? I planted eight new rose bushes a few months ago and the rose buds are just starting to come through but already they are being eaten away by these little insects. I really don't want to use the chemical pesticides but wondered if anyone could come up with another solution.

Hi Willow , The quickest way without chemicals is to squash them and check them each day ... aphids always go for the new growth so just keep a check on them daily ... if squemish use gloves ... Hope this is helpful, Jenx |

My Dad always used soapy washing up water. His Roses were beautiful and never got damaged by greenfly much. I can remeber he used to feed them on Phosphrogen and also Epsom salts too (don't know why empsom salts though?) He also burried banana skins in the ground near their roots too.( for nutrients). I read somewhere that growing old fashioned Marigolds deters greenfly. Poppy |

hi willow, I use the gardening glove re-moval method like Jen
you can buy organic spray that contains "fatty acids" but washing up water works just the same The green fly wont do to too much harm, and the ants usually clean up the sticky diposits the aphids leave behind, but if you start to see black powdery mildew on the leaves, you may have to whipe it off. lets hope for a good year for ladybirds, they will much their way through a load, so will hoverfly's and their young. I live and let live in my garden, its no use trying to fight nature (well thats my excuse)magz

Magz i so agree, nature is a winner in these things. I too wondered about Ladybirds eating the aphids, I imagine them blowing bubbles with the soapy washing up water Poppy |
