Hello Martine, If you have the proper encaustic iron, that can be your first little hotplate - just remove the handle and use it as a cradle to support the upturned iron (it's illustrated on the front of the box) The hotplate that we sell for EA is brilliant but expensive (£195) and large. I have them in stock and post is free! The temperature is controllable via a very good thermostat and it has no "hotspot" . An alternative is a hot tray (hostess tray) which sometimes pop up on Ebay or in secondhand shops. You really need one with a glass top and no edges higher than the glass surface. Even then, the majority have no heat control and get a bit too hot for some things. They usually have an extra hot area too (meant for liquids in jugs, i think) |

Hi Martine I have got a regular Hotplate, its a glass topped salton hotplate, it has a temp control however it does have a hotspot. I use mine on a regular basis and can control the heat really well as I have got to 'know' the settings required for specific techniques and I have never had any problems with it, and I reckon you can pick them up for under £30 Sal has used a food warmer that you put in the microwave too Sally

I am amazes at what people ask for on the Freecycle site.
There are some pretty cheeky peeps who ask for very expensive things for free? Why don't you ask for an old unwanted hotpalte Martine? I intend to ask for one on ours? Someone may have one going spare? Poppy |

Reading ours Sally, I am sure peeps are asking forthings to sell on? There is a 'Wanted, brick a brack, any amount' on ours? If that isn't asking for things for a car boot then nothing is? then there's the 'Wanted, fencing, decking, BBQ and patio table and chairs' ? I like the idea of giving, but when peeps take the mickey so openly it spoils the nature of it? My neighbour has one; 'Offered; used jam jars and jiffy bags'. ( far out man!!!) They would have a potty ? Poppy |

I've got two hotplates, one large with a hot spot and a small square one, I only use the large one at special meals with lots of food and people! I must try the wee one out sometime. I haven't read our freecycle for a bit, but I know people were desperate for jam jars last summer when there was a glut of plums and damsons! So someone may want some! |

And well done to Barry for being a great member and not just trying to sell his hotplate, I call that really good service when he gives the cheaper alternatives.

Have to agree Barry is one of the few left where money is not the "end and be all" and is willing to part with his knowledge freely to help others. Many large companies could learn a lot from Barry with regards to customer service!! With regards to the hotplate I use the iron upside down ,also one of those blocks that you can heat on the microwave(Hot rock). I have to say the above do have there limitations I eventually took the plunge and brought the A2 from Barry . Have to say it is the business, it has opened a whole new world of waxing for me. I have found one small problem though...I use more wax With the hotplate I often use heat from above (iron)and below, when I first tried and had it set too hot the wax was too runny and lost its definition (melted back to a pool so to speak) don't know if this would be a problem with a plate with hot spots, just a thought. Hope this is of some help Tephy

My hotplate has got a hotspot but it hasnt casued me any problems, although I suppose it would depending on the size of your project, I can fit an A4 onto it without touching the hotspot but an A3 does cover the whole plate, and then it is a case of controlling the temp I wouldnt be without my hotplate, and yes you use loads of wax
