Thanks Catherine! there's some great tutorials on this, I have a couple of old heavy wire hangers, I think I'll sacrifice one and try this. :ta:

I printed out the tutorials, I am not going to look at them till I plant my mums (I have two flats of them sitting sadly in my front yard. ) I can't wait to try it though!

Ooh that's a lovely link, thank you. I am planning on trying the convertible wrap first http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=FREE001 , and have already ordered the yarn (Giotto in Lichen)

I got my hairpin on ebay. I have wanted one for about 25 years!!!

I have also put on my Amazon wish list a couple of books on knitting creatively... how to arrange shaping and work without patterns, or substitute stitch patterns on to a plain garment; I hope that if I can master it for knitting I can carry it over to crochet and its variations...

Wow this is easy! I used the tutorial with the video (in the first column), I didn't realize there was a video one at first kept looking at the ones in the second column, frustrated myself till I saw the video, which made this very very simple.. I made the hook from the hanger and it worked perfectly. Used a dremel to round the ends, took maybe ten minutes in total to make.
This is my first attempt, I did two, joined them and edged them . Turned out ok and was a lot of fun.
the first attempt and my homemade fork.

I'm going to go try some more complicated stitches and edging.

Ahh I was smug too soon, I was trying some of the fancier edgings and I must say they can really be a bit of a pain! Having fun wasting wool with it though. :D
