Hi everyone, Rachel saw a beautiful childs Arran sweater that cost £40 in a designer outlet! She knew better than to buy it and as i used to knit these quite alot she wants me now to knit 4 arran sweaters for Jake and his friend William.
Just wondered DOES anyone know where i can download a free pattern for an Arran sweater, chest sizes 24 & 26? If not free then where i can get one?
My patterns are from 35 years ago and have narrow arms , i need a more modern sweater pattern than i already have.
Here's hoping? :thumbup;
Thanks in advance? Hugs Poppy :wave:

Hi poppy, try this site

http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/

I use the crochetpatterncentral all the time and the knitting one is very popular too! :)

They were discussing Arans at my sewing group and said the patterns haven't really changed over the years. I guess you are going to be busy Poppy! :hooker:

Sorry i haven' t been on to say thanks Catherine and Jo. :thumbup;
I had a look on the link Catherine but no childrens arran patterns. But i have found one i had from 30 years ago, so i am adapting that one. :thumbup;
JO, yes the patterns ghaven't changed, but the length of welts and shape of the sweaters do change from generation to generation. The one i found is looking fine at the moment, i just have to adapt it here and there so it looks modern.
I have now almost finished the back of Jake's first one, it has now come out error free at last? It has been ages, years since i did any arran knitting, and i made a couple of wrong twists( unlike me honest) and i am a perfectionist where arran patterns are concerned.

When i was an avid knitter, i used to get most of my wool/yarn from woollen mills, i hadn't realised how little there are left nowadays?
DO either of you know where i could get wool/yarn from mills on cones, as i used to get years ago? The on i used to use was taken over by ready cut and they don' sell mill wool anymore? It's all designer stuff at inflated prices?LOL

This is the back of the sweater, too big to scan, and it is bleached out , but the colour is oatmeal and loooks really lovely. Prper picture when i have finished. :thumbup;

I get my cones from ebay, but aran weight yarn is very expensive at the moment, you can get some very reasonalby priced 4ply from vairous ebay sellers, if you dont have ebay I would try a company called bedford knitting machines

http://www.bsk.co.uk/

I have ordered yarn from them and its good service, although their online sales are with ebay, it might be worth having a look at the site and contacting them for a catalogue. :)

It's looking good Poppy, I bet Jake will be nice and cosy when he wears it.
I haven't bought wool on cones for ages - still have some in a box! Doubt if I'll ever get my knitting machine out again but I keep it just in case! :r

Thanks Jo, i have just finished the second, smaller one, for his friend William, last week.
I will try and get the 2 of them in a photo together wearing them and post on here.
I am knitting a lacy mattinee jacket now.( no reason, just fancied it, it's for an internet babywear site)
