ANCHISES, from the ACA, has a fascinating article in the current Cryptologia, on using Simulated Annealing to solve short Playfairs. His findings: 1. Using quadrigram log frequencies is the best scoring method. 2. Simulated annealing works better than shotgun, but only in the middle temperatures. He claims that when the temp is too high and when it's too low, there's little progress towards the correct solution - it's in the middle when the rapid progress is made, and that can be accomplished by setting a single middling temperature and never changing it. |
