There have been a lot of people, through the years, who've used APL for crypto. The matrix operations alone make certain kinds of processing very simple. I ordered a copy of a fascinating-looking book, the other day: Mr. Babbage's Secret: The Tale of a Cypher and Apl by Ole Immanuel Franksen ISBN 0136047297 This appears to be simultaneously an examination of how APL can be used in cryptography, and an exploration of Babbage's work in cryptography as revealed in his unpublished notes.
