It's not satisfying if someone else codes it :)

I finally got done with my simple frequency counter. It shouldn't have taken so long, but I'm lazy :P

Now I'm gonna work on a "best guess" sort of thing, see what kind of results it can produce.

I have a basic english frequency table, but obviously frequency is highly dependent on the length of the text. Anybody know of any tables streamlined for various lengths? So I can analyze the length of the ciphertext and select the frequency table appropriately?

It's not so much that the frequency table depends on the length of the text, so much as the fact that the more data you have, the more accurate a guide the frequency table will be.

Consider the following messages, all of which are the same length:

NO CRYPTOGRAPHY TODAY THANK YOU

PETER PIPER PICKED A PECK OF PI

JEJUNE JOHN JONES JUMPS JOLLILY

No one frequency table will give you decent, useful results for all these messages.

As the size of the message increases, the chance of a decent frequency analysis also increases. But beware! Some chap once managed to write an entire book - which didn't just make sense but was also quite long and apparently fairly readable - without using a single letter E !!

Yea, I heard about that. Pretty odd... er... hobby.
