Welecome to LOKI's pen and paper Cipher Challenge. I hope that it gives you a challenge and helps you learn more about the world cryptology. Each cipher is independant of each other with different keys and different enciphering methods. Each enciphering method is well documented and from a traditional pen and paper enciphering technique. The challenge will be to figure out what the method was to encipher the text and then to decipher the text. Cipher 1 should be a nice warm up for you. Well, I don't have much time right now, but I can tell you that No 1 does seem to bear all the hallmarks of a monoalphabetic substitution cipher. In all sincerity, I think the ease of decoding it climbed quickly once I had guessed one letter. (A few cribs in the above, which I won't point out explicitly.) |

insecure, is correct, the simplicity of cipher 1 is elementry. I added two more simple ciphers as a warm up for cipher 1, just to make things a little more difficult. After cipher 1 all other cipher will follow traditional 5 block lettering. |

One of the Ciphers used this method The ADFGVX cipher was one of the most important German Field ciphers, used during World War I. It combines the fractioning of a Polybius Square with a single Columnar Transposition. Although this combination provided a powerfull encryption, Georges Painvin, a brilliant French codebreaker, succeeded in breaking the German cipher. The letters ADFGVX were chosen because they were well distinguist in morse code. The ADFGVX Cipher requires two keys. One for the square and one for a single columnar transposition. Message : THIS IS A SECRET Square key : CALIFORNIA Columnar key: APOLLO To use the ADFGVX cipher, we start with a matrix with 6 rows and columns. This matrix is filled with the alphabet and the numbers 0 to 9. Congrats to Revelation for being the first to break a cipher. Yes, Cipher 1, part 1 is a monoalphabetic cipher. A monoalphabetic cipher uses fixed substitution over the entire message. Using this system, the keyword "zebras" gives us the following alphabets: Plaintext alphabet: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz Ciphertext alphabet: ZEBRASCDFGHIJKLMNOPQTUVWXY A message of flee at once. we are discovered! enciphers to SIAA ZQ LKBA. VA ZOA RFPBLUAOAR! The disadvantage of this type of system is that though the actual message is hidden, it is very easy to break. Here are some classic monoalphabetic cipher links for more information if you do not know what they are. Caesar Shift ROT13 Dancing Men Atbash Pigpen There are many many more simple monoalphabetic ciphers. |

To be more precise, congratulations to Revelation for being the first to post the complete plaintext. Some people using this forum post just enough information to make it clear that they have cracked the cipher. Depending on who it is, they might simply say "I've cracked it", and that would be enough to convince us that they have in fact done so. |

I would like to know if the ADFGVX cipher has a reasonable column keyword length. I haven't been able to come up with anything, so I am wondering if it is long.. maybe longer than 10 letters. I think I have a way to attack it, but so far my attack isn't working on this particular text. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions. |
