I've been working through Caxton Foster's "Cryptanalysis for Microcomputers". Translating his BASIC programs to C++.

I'm only through chapter 3, but it gives me the tools to throw out a quick challenge.

Get out your scrabble sets, boys.

In the book?

It's long out of print, but Amazon's used resellers have some copies:

Has anyone actually tried this?

I'd expected at least a "that's way too easy to be interesting".

The IOC and the frequency counts point out that no letters are substituted. My guess is that this is a transposition cipher.

That's a reasonable guess. Hence my "Get out your scrabble sets, boys" comment.

Next question is, what kind of transposition? I said it's a simple challenge, so you can expect it's a simple transposition. And I dropped a couple of hints.

It'd be blindingly obvious, if you had Foster's book, but there aren't all that many possibilities.

Oh, I didn't see your comment :P

I haven't got time to try, but my guess is a columnar transposition cipher. :)

If anyone is still looking at this, it's a Railfence.

Hence the title.

Heh, I didn't even think about that. I probably should have just tried various transpositions. I have gotten lazy.

He is one of my favorite authors and I have that text in ____ _____'s Greatest Hits.
