Best 256-bit Hash Function; Comparison

A question I have been trying to answer,

If one were to use a secure hash function as a key generator what would be your choice of hash function. Must be 256bit.

I personally like RipeMD-256, The source code is simple and easily implemented, as far as I know it has not been broken.

Any input?
