I have a cipher that has only 7 symbols, and 1 of them is used infrequently. I was given no information about the cipher other than that it's compressed. Looking at the symbols I notice that one (!) appears more than any others... likely it's LWZ compression, right? A LWZ compressed binary code? Here's the original message, if any of you have seen something similar I'd love some hints as to what it is and how to crack a compressed cipher.

Wow. This adds whole new levels of complexity to cipher busting. 7 symbols just seems odd. LZW compression would require a dictionary, and would be very inefficient in such a short message. I'm thinking something else is going on here. Especially with the odd way the exclamation mark shows up in clumps and the @ sign shows up mostly as a double. Presuming the message is legitimate, ... Hmmm, I'll have to think on this one for a while. |

Maybe the symbol '^' is a break between 2 words..... |

Additionally the ( appears only once which is perhaps a line break. the message was a response to a code I sent out in RLE compressed binary, so perhaps the return code is a similar method. The ! could be 1 and @ zero as they are the most repeated symbols, but then we have 5 other symbols to decide upon. |

Well, can it be a multilateral substitution cipher - possibly trilateral or more...??? |

Are you sure you don't mean "multiliteral"? |
