William Blair's "Cipher"

In my reading, I've seen references to an 1807 Encyclopedia article by William Blair, that was a highly regarded source of info on cryptography. A few months ago I tracked down a copy, and arranged to have it scanned. Since then, I've been working (between other obligations) on putting the scans into a form that would be useful to the couple of dozen people who are interested in this sort of thing.

I have a rough draft ready, at:

Take a look at it, if you're interested. If anyone would be willing to critique my intro, I'd appreciate it, and if there are parts of the scan you find difficult to read, point them out to me.

Please don't distribute this widely - I'm not happy yet with the image processing, and will be making improvements, partly based on any feedback I get from the forum.

Very nice! I like your intro too, it shows that you've done your research well.

The last page is hard to read and some pieces of the text seem semi-transparent. That might be worth a rescan.

Btw, it's hard to read an f as an s!
edit: cool, if an s is at the end of a word, it is written as an s. Reminds me of the Old Greek alpahbet, it has the same duality.

I know the image processing isn't quite right, everywhere. That's why it's marked as a preliminary draft. There are places I need to tweak the image processing some.

But I wanted to get this up for folks to look at, before I took off on vacation.

I spent the last week in New Orleans, at the 2008 ACA convention.

Fun trip.

Nice! I would have gone too if I'd live in the U.S.

Not an excuse.

We had a couple of folks from Canada, and one from Italy.
