I just posted a new Progress Report (#12) on the Chaocipher Clearing House site which I think would be of great interest to Crypto Forum readers. I recently read a fascinating declassified account of how the US successfully cryptanalyzed and solved the highest Japanese diplomatic cipher, codenamed by the Americans as "PURPLE". The document, entitled "Preliminary Historical Report of the Solution of the "B" Machine", was written by William F. Friedman on October 14, 1940, some two weeks after the first solution of the PURPLE machine by Friedman's group. I was struck by an incredible feeling of deja-vu when reading it. There are many technical parallels between the phenomena exhibited by both system. Can studying PURPLE provide any insights into Chaocipher? I enumerate my thoughts there. I think you'll find it most interesting. Regards, Moshe |
