Experts at intelligence agency GCHQ have asked for help in de-coding a message found attached to a pigeon leg, thought to date back to WWII.
The dead bird was found in a chimney in Surrey a few weeks ago.
But without more information, the code may never be cracked, according to the BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera.

The code:

Seems unlikely to be cracked is right :)

From what I've read on the topic, the issue is that it could be a poem code (involving an unknown keyed transposition) where AOAKN is the indicator for the words in the poem or . . . .

Or something designed to look like a poem code, which was common during that time - so the enemy would waste time attacking it in that fashion.

My first instincts were the 27 was a check for the number of 5 letter groups sent and 1525 being the time and perhaps 6 being the 6th message sent that day, or something similar.

I've got nothing!

"There are still some scattered unsolved Enigma messages from World War II. There are also various other WWII encryption systems that were never solved"

I'm always skeptical of decrypts that rely on "there are a lot of acronyms"

But I'll be happy to see if there's an actual plaintext that can be verified.
