This newspaper article deals with a recent interesting case where a cipher text with undeclared algorithm was put into the public field with a novel purpose.

The article begins "For the past two years, a mysterious online organisation has been setting the world's finest code-breakers a series of seemingly unsolveable problems."

That certain encrypted stuffs without known encryption algorithms remain undeciphered could naturally be quite interesting, but is that really of significance for the crypto as a science? There are lots of stuffs of the said genre that could consume arbitrary amounts of time of anyone who think that he could afford to spend his time to tackle that genre of stuff. A couple of famous examples are: The disk of Phaistos, the Shugborough inscription, the (yet unsolved parts of) the Beale ciphers and the Feynman ciphers and the Voynich manuscript, Personally I am of the opinion that those who have the ingenuity and time to do that kind of work should better attempt to decipher some lost natural languages instead, the successful results of which would have some scientific values in the normal sense.
