Scenario : This is a message from Headquarters to an Intelligence Officer

The Case Officer, who is sending the message, is concerned about getting the message transmitted correctly, so she is sending it in numeric form.

It is known that they are using the ASCII decimal character set; so
45 equals “-” ( dash ) ; 40 equals “(“ “left parentheses”; and 41
equals “)” ; which is “right parentheses” . The message starts after the date and time. The date is Date/Month/Year format.

We may be lucky, and get the key at a future date.

Hi Joe

At first I thought it odd that there were 13 blocks of 8 characters (16 digits) in the key, matching the number of characters (104) in the plain text, but 16 blocks (if you discount the two header blocks) in the cipher. Also, I noticed that some of the key blocks had an additional digit or, in the case of block 7, two missing at the beginning. It transpires that Blocks 5 and 6 decode to "CONTACTATCAFENEU", whereas, substituting Blocks 7 and 8 gives "ASSETAT.EROUGEEQ". You will notice a typo in Block 5 of the key, which should have ended "6669" rather than "6699". Also in the same block the sequence "8163335" should read "816335". The first digit (3) of key Block 9 is missing. I note that there is an error in the 11th digit of Block 11, either the key should be "0" or the cipher digit should be "9". Similarly, in Block 12, either the key for the 3rd character should be "38" or the cipher text should be "99". In the final block, the message decrypts to "ZDNDX" instead of "ZENDX", so either the key for that character should be "95" or the cipher text should be "55". The second key block begins "83484843" instead of "8348483". I notice also that key Block 10 begins "084447" instead of "08447". The other extra block in the cipher text is Block 10, which is the same as Block 9.

I guess that just goes to show that typing into a forum window is prone to errors. It happens frequently!

With kind regards

Laurence

Typo's happen sometimes; also static and Electromagnetic Pulse -- sometimes. That's why <<error correction>> is needed ( ha ha ha ) . Thanks for the review. I will check my work, again.

No problem, Joe. It occurs to me that one of the most interesting challenges about your post is how you generated the key stream. I suspect a PRNG but, If I get the time, I'll have a go at cracking it. Don't hold your breath though.

Review Block-group that starts 4087. You are writing, I believe, about an error of the Plaintext that
relates to "OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS....." I think that that is correct, that block-group.

I Laurence ;

<< THIS TIME >> The key was generated by the Fourmilab.Ch site .

I did supply the key, for a One-Time Pad/OTK message.

I found I had some incorrect text; we don't want to confuse about the location. The duplicate cipher block-group was unintended.

Thank you.

I will be away for 1 week. Best regards. Joe .
