The battle raged on as the two titans of tactics forced their men into precarious situations in hopes to deceive and entrap the opponent. Skott stared at the board for half an hour, trying to decide on which move he should make. Glancing at his watch he sighed as the second hand had ceased to move. Looking up, he saw his opponent staring intently at the board, unblinking and unwavering eyes focused on Skott's king. The onlookers too were staring with the same unwavering eyes as they awaited Skott's next move. His own eyes trailed to the chess clock that would put a limit on how long he could think of his move, however the face of the clock appeared to have the same tenacity as the onlookers; nothing moved on it, the second hand frozen in place, barely an inch away from where it had started originally. His opponent's clock was much different. It showed that he had spent a good five of his ten minutes in thinking. Deciding that he had analyzed the board enough, Skott moved his knight and put his opponent in check. As he was reaching for the clock, he heard a curse from the foe and a gasp from someone in the crowd that had gathered. After a few more minutes, the opponent growled in frustration and flicked his king off of the table, admitting his defeat. Skott grinned and picked up his bag and headed off towards the soda machine. At that moment, he heard someone shout. "You cheater!" And as Skott turned to face his accuser, he noticed that a few feet between him and his opponent's buddy was the king, frozen in mid-air. Skott studied the attacker's face and the piece went flying past him as he sidestepped it. Bewildered, the attacker only grunted as he walked with his friend back into the hall ways. Skott had most definitely not been cheating....if you consider the rules of the game. He did remain within the confines of the time limit. But when you can freeze time at will, time limit's aren't really a problem, especially when it comes to chess. With a shrug, Skott reached in his pocket and produced a dollar as he continued his walk to the soda machine. |
