Nathaniel whipped around when the tray hit the ground, instinctively shoving his hands into the oversized pocket in his hoodie and stepping sideways into deeper shadows cast by the lamp.

He gripped the small knife he kept in the confines of the pocket, eyes darting around to find the source of the disturbance, only to see Mai standing there looking like she'd seen a ghost. He began to relax a bit before a set of footsteps and a man he hadn't invited in rushed into his apartment. He stared at the newcomer, knife now pulled free of its sheath inside his pocket. The man's prominent jawline cast a shadow over his neck - a quick kill should it be required.

Then Nathaniel noticed the Elite armband the man wore, and the metals the man wore, and forced himself to relax.

"Oh sorry," the man said a bit sheepishly. ""Just got off work, afraid I’m still a bit on edge. Well, now that I’m here, do you need any help?"

It took a few heartbeats for Nathaniel to respond, giving the man a bow of his head that was as much an acceptance as "let's pretend that didn't happen."

"Understandable, sir." Nathaniel said, slipping the knife back into its sheath under the cover of his pocket. "And as I told Ms. Suzuki earlier, I won't turn down offers to help." He quirked his quick smile and moved behind the man to check on the door, which was wide open.

Those doors were supposed to close on their own unless you propped them open, and Nathaniel hadn't done so. He would have to get that looked at by the super. He grabbed the last box of stuff from outside - a bit annoyed that he hadn't noticed he'd left it there in the first place, and toted it inside.

He finally turned back to Kai, who had collected herself from whatever ordeal that had caused her to drop the tray. He quirked a concerned eyebrow her way, "You okay? What happened?"

"A-ah, I'm sorry. Clumsy me, ahaha." the girl said, bonking herself in the head. "W-what were we talking about?"

"Maths, but I doubt Mr..." He trailed off to gesture at Lennox, hoping the man would take the less-than-subtle hint to introduce himself after barging into his apartment.

Lennox seemed visably flustered as he was placed into a social situation, but the sight of red let him regain his bearings a little. Then Lennox realized what he had said and was now trapped in his least favorite of arenas, the arena of sociality. "Umm…" he found himself at a loss for words (C’mon my little bear, don’t be afraid) Lennox found his mother’s voice badgering him. Fortunately Nathaniel came to his rescue and Lennox was able to re-associate himself. "Yes, Mr. Barons, Lennox Barons", he began fidgeting with his medals again, which was more of a nervous response than an attempt to show off. "Of the Elite", he added, his nervous demeanor fought out in place of pride as he mentioned the words. He moved outside and grabbed one of the boxes, hoping to at least be helpful. "I can’t say I’ve seen either of you around here before. New recruits?" he suggested thinking both of them might be Elite. Really, he just hoped to finish this up so he could go home and be with his plants ( How are you ever going to make friends like that little bear?) Lennox was worried by his mother's mental intrusions.

Mai shrank away from the door as someone burst in, bumping into the wall in her panic.
She took a few deep breaths, shoved her shaking hands into the folds of her skirt, pulling the hem down as far as it would go.
Even though the newcomer didn't look like too much of a threat, if his clothing was anything to go by, he was Elite as well.

"W-well I guess I'd better be going..."

But she stumbled a little bit on her way out, still as white as a sheet. It was exhausting, blocking out all the information hounding her on all sides, but it was better than seeing something like that again.
She had to get out before she fell down or something, that would only make things worse.
Get out, and have a big milkshake or something.
Or maybe go over to Cori's house and beg her for some sort of alcohol.

"Mr. Barrons would care much." Nathaniel finished, glancing back at the man when he belatedly added "Of the Elite." as though that weren't already obvious. The man's nervousness puzzled him, but he wasn't about to let it show.

"W-well I guess I'd better be going..."

Mai looked like she was about to pass out, and Nathaniel really didn't want to have another scene happen, so he intercepted the girl to move her onto the desk chair that had been placed close by. "Sit. You look pale. Water?"

He got them all some anyway, using the glasses Mai had so recently put away. "I'm Nathaniel Webb," He finally replied to Lennox, his immediate concern of Mai taken care of as he handed her the glass. "And yes, I'm a fairly new recruit. Just graduated SIN."

Try as he might, he couldn't hold back his curiosity any longer. "Your metals - I know some of them. My father earned a few of the same. Where were you stationed in the war?"

He was sure his last name would have sparked up any relation his father and Lennox may have had. Chances are they weren't even in the same division, but without the man's insignia it was impossible to know.

Lennox was glad for the question, he found it easier to speak when it related to his duties. “I earned a few of these in the war, I was stationed in a hospital near Perdido Street station.” He remembered the old building, hastily reinforced and decently stocked, rows of beds filling up the sides. “I was ten at the time and mostly tended to the soldiers, the only time I remember fighting was when I was relieving Stannis Courthouse.”

He remembered it well, sneaking through the night with the soft rustling of MREs accompanying him. He had to be swift and quiet, that was the main thing, and he could see the enemies searchlights streaming across the damaged building. But in the end he made it, the troops there fell to their knees and prayed as they came in, but Lennox had to last out the siege with them. The pace was barraged by the enemy but by the fifth day the Wisemen Forces made their push, securing the square. Lennox returned changed, more certain of what this war was for.

“I may have met your father in either of those places but I was so young and the times were to violent.” Lennox looked up and placed down the box, done with recalling memories. “I don’t recall meeting any men that I would call craven during the war, I’m sure your father served with honor, whether I met him or not.”
