As his fingers fell down upon the strings of his guitar he watched in glee as the hundreds… nay, Thousands! Of Ferinus organize themselves into a sort of demonic water synchronization team. Except instead of water it was snow, and instead of points they went for body count. He had to admit that the last bit disturbed him, but once again he just tried to put it out of his mind. “Better World Better World Better World” he repeated in his head while he thought of more melodious notes to play. Fredrick kept an eye on his personal brand of Ferinus. They were 2 odd little buggers, he'd give them that. But they were still of him and thus he would have to care for them. As of this moment the scrawny one flipped over a wheelbarrow and looked rather like a turtle, and the strong one was leading the charge to another house with people inside. Suddenly a noise drew the musician’s attention to a large armor plated Ferinus being in serious trouble. Rather quickly Fredrick willed a portion of the horde to swarm that area. He didn’t know how but it reached the Ferinus. But he assumed that, like music, the orders just flowed. Whoever it was, they were in for a nasty surprise. “Better World” |

Brooke flinched a little as she snapped the legs of one of the more spindly Ferinus. It fell to the ground and whined pitifully before the brunette gave it a swift kick in the head. Moments before, the thing had managed to all but rip in half one of the villagers she'd been trying to evacuate. Brooke caught sight of the reddened snow around the dead man's body, and with a scream, gave another kick to the creature's neck. There was a crack and its head slumped at an odd angle, the red in the snow darkening to black. She stepped away from the corpse and looked around. The others in the small group she'd been leading away from the carnage seemed to have kept running toward relative safety. That was good. Good wasn't a word she'd use for anything else. You could barely go an inch without running into one of the Ferinus, and the battle going on around her was less of a fight than a slaughter. She caught sight of a couple fighting at an approaching Ferinus with nothing but a shovel and ran forward and between the would-be victims and their attacker. The two were already covered in cuts and bruises, though they didn't look badly hurt. Yet. They did, however, look terrified. The man holding onto the shovel was visibly shaking. Brooke nodded, giving them each a small smile as she eased the shovel out of the man's hands and turned around just in time to take a swipe at the monster as it leaped towards them. The thing shrieked and fell to the ground, the side of its head quite noticeably having a whole that hadn't been there before. Brooke hit the thing with the shovel a few more times before casting the bent up tool aside. "Head that way, you can take cover in the snow drifts outside the village!" She said, pointing back. The couple nodded and took off, kicking up snow as they ran. Brooke sighed, looking around. She'd taken down a good sum of Ferinus already, but they just seemed to keep coming. And she hadn't seen the others for a while. Okay, that was definitely bad, she had to fix that. She scanned the battlefield for a minute before she finally caught sight of Ellie. The cat girl was jabbing at one of the larger metallic Ferinus, and she seemed to be doing fine...until the thing raised a fist to pummel her. Brooke sprung forward, feeling guilty for not having gone to help sooner. She grabbed Ellie and pulled her out of the way as the beast's heavy fist came down. It landed a glancing blow on the girl's arm and her sensors buzzed frantically at her that her right shoulder was now dented inward. Figures and numbers flashed before her vision but they were a little hard to pay attention to when she and Ellie were rolling haphazardly through the snow. Brooke dug her feet and free hand into the ground, slowing them down until they stopped. "Sorry about that..." She said, pulling herself up.With a glance, Brooke could see that the cat girl wasn't badly injured. She stood, brushing caked snow off her clothes and offering Ellie a hand. |

After suddenly being robbed of crushing the annoying pest who had been zapping it, the Goliath whirled with a snarl on the next available person. Luckily Jake wasn’t that person. Seeing as how the creature conveniently had its back to him, he felt it only necessary to scale this mountain. Like some sort of deranged squirrel, he leapt up and onto the creatures back, using the bone plates as handholds. When he finally reached the peak of his triumph he sat up and shouted. “Now Ruel! Shoot it! Shoot it!” He blinked and stared wide eyed at the ground beside the monster. “What do you mean she doesn’t have any bullets Max!? Why didn’t you tell me that BEFORE I jumped on his head!?” And then the rollercoaster began. |

The battle was going relatively smooth. There were a few Ferinus casualties, but that was to be expected when a bunch of brainless animals were sent after a semi-defended down. The wolf-like creatures fell quickly, distracting the thinning villagers long enough for Khyron's Goliaths to move in. The four non-Glacies residents were busy bringing down a single one of the Cylon's creations while the three others ripped easily through the the rest of the small town. Already one of them was reaching the opposite, it's fists and legs red with blood. Then something started to change. The villagers started clumping together, drawing closer and closer to the four that had arrived to help. The last rounds from their rifles echoed through the air, all defenses turning to the surrounded Plated Goliath. The creature didn't stand a chance and it was quickly brought down, the armor it had quickly running out as pitchforks, shovels, crude swords, and bullets turned its skin to Swiss cheese. With a loud, deep rumble, the Ferinus collapsed to the ground in a puddle of black and a shout of victory, as small as it was, reaching the sky. The remaining villagers, no more than three-dozen, formed a circle of bodies, the outside edges lined with sharp objects that stupid Ferinus lunged into, impaling themselves. The battle was far from over, though. Yes, they didn't see the next wave of Ferinus that was almost cresting the hill. When they see those, their spirits will drop and victory would be iminent. I will not lose, Tori insisted, circling lazily among the clouds. --------------------- Ruel was only too happy when the rest of the village came to their help, the Plated Goliath finally meeting its fate: death. However, the number that remained was alarming. When they had gone to this city for the hot springs, it was bustling with activity and now, compared to before, there was only a handful left. The first group of Ferinus were nearly destroyed, their ranks split and several of the giants destroyed. What was left was rushing blindly, being taken care of in a few attacks. And suddenly it was quiet. Their leaders killed, the rest of the villagers turned to the young woman who seemed to lead the other three that had joined their ranks, almost begging for any plan whatsoever. And so Ruel did. She stood atop the Plated Goliath so everyone else could see her, and wiped the blades of her knives on her pantleg. "I think the worst is over, but there are bound to be a few more waves, though hopefully minor compared to the first. I don't think we can handle anymore. Right now we don't have time to collect the dead, or, as inhumane as it sounds, treat the wounded. If these are anything like I've faced before, the next wave isn't far behind the first and we have to take this time to set up defenses again. "I want those with longer range weapons to be up in the front, and that includes me and my team. The others are to be in the back. If there's another giant, we group together and take it down while others protect our back from the weaker Fer--" Ruel stopped as she felt something strange. Vibrations were running up her legs as the pool of Ferinus blood below her rippled outwards from the center. This was very bad. Just then, the next wave of Ferinus crested the hills, the Obsessive Fangs growling and snarling as they thundered towards the town, but this time the symbols on their heads were pulsing and spinning - something was powering them! "They're on their way!" Ruel shouted, jumping from the Plated Goliath and running to the edge of the group. "If we stick together we can fend them of, but we must stay close. If even one of them breaks the ranks, we're going to have a much harder time keeping them at bay." Her words were strong, but after glimpsing the size of the group heading their way, they were mainly encouragement. Max, I hope your luck exists, because we could really use it right now. And then the Ferinus were upon them. |

Ellie blinked up at Brooke, surprised, but then frowned. "I can handle myself fine. Like I've said to the others, I don't need your help." With that, she smacked Brooke's hand away and stood up on her own. All of a sudden, she noticed the villagers that remained had gathered around them and had begun to attack the large Ferinus. Then she froze, her ears standing straight up. The feline girl could hear it. The pounding of thousands of feet getting closer with every second. "H-hey...Ruel...not to interrupt your speech b-but..." However, her warning came a little too late. They were already coming over the hill. Spinning her baton, Elloise gathered what electricity she could from the Plated Goliath's corpse. Instead of the normal yellow sparks, the energy coursing through the weapon were a light blue and they still felt...off. However, she refused to let herself be caught unaware again. What she didn't notice was that her fighting stance was lower than normal and her pupils had dilated slightly. Taking several steps back to be in line with the others, she readied herself for the coming wave. 'All that matters is that I survive this. That's what I must concentrate on. No matter what, I can not die here.' |

Fredrick watched as ever so slowly more and more Ferinus fell to the small group of resistance, then suddenly the entire horde dropped in a matter of minutes after Khyron’s Goliaths fell. Luckily Fredrick was able to tell the more aggressive of his two Ferinus to fall back before the first wave fell. From up on his hill he watched as Tori readied the next wave, it was almost twice the size of the first. He figured that even numbers required a semblance of order however and he sent his brand in to rally the horde. It was an impressive and utterly terrifying sight to watch as thousand tiny symbols spring together in bright blue light. Their muscles strengthened, senses heightened, and formation straitened. Then they charged down upon the exhausted little village. Although he had to admit it, even though his mind was on the battle his heart wasn’t in it. He understood why they were fighting and what the stakes were. But this musician was really out of his element. Fredrick wasn’t paying much attention to how cold it really was though and played his guitar fast and strummed hard. And it was because of this fact that the strings hit a freezing point and simultaneously all snapped at once which then flung back and hit him in his eye. The effect was almost immediate, the color drained from the symbols, their muscles weakened again, and the formation became sloppy again. Some even tripped and fell down. This was bad, very bad indeed. Fredrick quickly stated “Gah! This will take a minute to fix! One moment!” and he struggled with the strings to try to make them fit back into position. |

Soft green eyes widened as the wave surged toward the defenders. Jake almost stepped back from the line. It looked so overwhelming, even he and Max could only do so much right? But without them these people would die… Shoulders firmly set, he stared into the onslaught. The first to get to his part of the living wall had the distinct misfortune to slip in the snow and skid right into one of the spikes. But as the others followed behind them Jake’s fighting continued to be filled with strange occurrences. (most to his advantage) A pair of snapping teeth would be just out of reach of his throat. A claw would slash at his limbs only to graze him. Fatal wounds became minor ones, and minor wounds missed him entirely. One ferinus actually killed itself on accident when it stabbed it’s stinger into its own leg while trying to get at Jake. He stood full height, black and red blood spattering his clothing and face, and some dripping from his hair to mix in the snow. It was all he could do to try and boost moral. His brave stance was unfortunately wasted as one of the many ferinus in the swarm quickly charged him directly, before he could react the rift monster leapt up and ploughed into him. It happened all so fast. Jake was on the ground and pinned beneath its body when he felt something warm and sticky starting to dribble across his chest. Fortunately for Jake, he had instinctively brought his arm up to shield himself, and it just so happens that his bowie knife had been in that hand. The wayward ferinus had unwittingly jumped straight onto the blade and now lay lifeless on top of him. The blonde let his head flop back in relief. “that…was too close Max.” This was going to be one wild fight. |

Ellie was beginning to suspect that maybe there was something to the claims of Jake having good luck. She usually wasn't what most would call "superstitious". She didn't have a huge belief in luck or in things like fate. Choice was all that mattered. Still, to her, it was odd how he almost always got through most fights unharmed. However, in no way did she think that his imaginary friend was behind it. There had to be something else at work...She struck at another Ferinus then considered something else. As soon as they had gotten close to the group, their unity disappeared. They were a mob of panicked beasts like they had been before. Not that the brunette was complaining. This way, they were much easier to dispatch. Sure, some had gotten in a few hits, but most were shallow scratches. What worried her was the pain in her side, right below her heart. She figured that it was a broken rib and if so, she had to be careful. One wrong move and it could puncture a lung..or worse. |

Ruel kept close to the others, pleased the the villagers seemed to be keeping within a few yards of everyone else. The horde of Ferinus had seemed unbeatable at first, but it was during one strange moment when they seemed to completely lose all coordination. She glanced at Jake again, gasping as another surely-fatal blow turned into a glancing blow before turning back to her battle. Her arms were dripping wet with blood, both her own and the Ferinus. Her face was streaked with black as she stabbed another rift creature and ripped it apart with pure adrenaline that rushed through her veins. She barely noticed as more claws scraped at her coat, shredding the sleeves and cutting into skin. It was hard to believe she was actually able to hold onto her weapons, but she blamed the stress for that. She shouted commands at each kill, not wasting more than a split second to make sure the defenses were good enough before attacking the next Ferinus. She knew that if she missed a single swipe, it could be her last, and that simply wouldn't do. The horde's obvious confusion made the fight a little easier and Ruel couldn't help but cherish every last bit of luck they had. But for now, they had to focus and destroy as many as they could before they got organized again. |

It was astonishing. The ferinus had hit the defenders and broke like a waves on the beach. Their sudden and mysterious confusion weakened their lines and it moments the panicked and disoriented rift creatures began to withdraw, snarling and yipping as they were pushed farther and farther toward the city limits. The village fighters listened to Ruel’s every command and began to follow her as a cohesive fighting group. Decimating the retreating ferinus as they defended their homes and families. Jake watched in awe as the forces that were meant to crush them were driven back. He patted beside him as if patting someone’s forearm and shook his head, a weary smile appearing. “I have to hand it too you Max. Sometimes you amaze even me.” The blonde turned as one of the townspeople ran up to him and pulled down the bandana, which had helped keep some of the cold wind and blood at bay. Jake was really glad he had it. “Thanks a lot kid.” The man said wiping his brow. “I don’t know how we did it but we survived.” Jake smiled bashfully. “Th-thanks…but it was mostly my buddy Max here. He’s the strong one, not me.” The man stared at the snow bank the boy gestured to and scratched his head looking from the bank to the boy and back. “Riiiight…Thank you, er…Max?” he turned and slowly began to walk back to the spot where he had dug his pitchfork into the ground a confused expression on his face, and questions as to how a snow bank was strong. As the rest followed Ruel in pushing back the main group, a few stayed behind to protect the town hall and its precious contents. When the attack had began the old, women and children, and anyone who couldn’t fight had been moved to the town hall. A large wooden and stone building that was little more ornate then a drinking hall of ancient societies, but it was the only defendable place they knew. The evac to this structure had in fact been the very reason that all the buildings in the village had been empty save for those who had chosen to stay behind to fight. “Oh the joys of fighting eh Max?” He sighed, grabbing a handful of snow and using it to clean out a shallow set of claw marks on his forearm. He noticed some ferinus blood had gotten into the cut and quickly scrubbed a little harder. “The lovely places we get to visit.” A building collapsed behind him in a cloud of flame and smoke. “The wildlife…” A ferinus squealed a few feet away as a town fighter put the injured creature out of its misery. “Heck,” He reached up and began cleaning a few flecks of blood off his sunglasses. “This is the best workout I’ve ever had.” He muttered jokingly. His face fell as he came across the body of one of the villagers. Eyes frantically flicking over the bodies and he let out a breath he hadn’t known he had been holding. His friends weren’t dead, Ruel was leading the villagers in a counter attack, Ellie was only short distance away. And the pile of ferinus killed by Brooke were hard to miss. They were safe now, and the massive doors to the town hall hadn’t been broken either. Then why did he feel unsettled? The blonde turned to Max and gave a half hearted smile. “Yeah, I know….” He stretched and began to walk over to Ellie, eying her staff wearily as he knew just what would happen if he startled her with that in her hands. It finally looked as if things were going to be okay. Sadly, Jake couldn’t have known about the small attack group of rift monsters that was about to break in through the rear guard, and test whether our band of friends deserved the title of Heroes… |

They were actually retreating! Karl was actually right! Despite everything she'd told him, somehow, against the odds, they were holding the Ferinus at bay, and then some! Ruel could hardly believe how well everything was working out; the way her teammates were mowing down the rift beasts, the way the town people were working together like she had shouted at them to do, and especially how few bodies were falling now. She looked over at Jake for the half-a-dozenth time, shaking her head in half amazement, half disbelief as he patted the air next to him, claiming it was all "Max" that was turning the tide. But, she couldn't stop leading just yet. "Don't quit!" she yelled, motioning for the survivors to keep going. "Push them back and wipe them out!" The villagers gave a cry of victory, raising gore-covered knives, pitchforks, and other pieces of farm equipment into the air as they rushed forward with renewed vigor; the Ferinus' death cries grew louder and more frequent again as the villagers fell upon them. Ruel, however, stayed behind. She studied her friends for a second, standing amidst a body-littered street. Ellie was covered from head to toe in Ferinus blood, and seeing her like that made Ruel laugh, knowing just how much she'd hate to have to bathe later. They didn't like each other, but seeing fight so hard for humans she claimed to hate gave Ruel a renewed respect. Jake had that goofy smile plastered on his face, little smears of black running down his face like he'd been in a ink-rain. Max, no doubt, walked invisibly beside him, holding up a conversation of his own about who-knew what. And finally, there was Brooke: the motherly one. One could tell that Brooke always preferred peace, but in times of war... damn she knew how to fight. Ruel hated seeing her fight, though. It ruined that whole "mom" look to her to the point where she seemed... contaminated. Ruel wanted her to do something else besides fight, but she was their strongest member and they still needed that. Ruel jogged up to the other three, mouth open as she panted with effort. "We're doing great here. We just need to destroy their forces before they have the chance to regroup and become more of a threat," she urged, wiping her forehead with the back of one hand but only succeeding in leaving a smear instead. "We're almost done. Let's go out there and finish this." ----------------------- From above, Tori circled the town, frowning in dismay as she watched their ranks run like cowards. Their leader was turning out to be stronger than she expected. Perhaps it was time to break her. As one they dove, the Ferinus disappearing into black shards of glass just above the ground, allowing Tori to land heavily on her feet near the outskirts of the city where the small group of Ferinus waited impatiently. She ran a hand down the tattered wing of one of her creations, the beast moving to the side silently to let her past. Tori moved to the front where their own ringleader stood. She crouched down, smiling wickedly and placing a hand on his shoulder. "It's time, Elias." |

Fredrick’s fingers fumbled with the string as he desperately loosened one end and tried to reattach the lower end, however the musicians resolve was shattered. Never in his eight years of playing has a string broken during a performance, let alone all six. It felt embarrassed and hot like there was a thousand eyes staring at him while he was trying to give a book report he forgot to write in high school and all his friends and family were there, oh and he was naked. Luckily a distraction arose as Tori floated down from the skies straddling a giant Ferinus Dragon. “A bit redundant don’t ya think?” he thought “I mean, doesn’t she have wings already?” But completely ignoreing this major detail, Tori leaned over to the small boy who had been standing on the hill the whole time. "Hmm I must be getting old I don't remember seeing him here at all" he mused. Fredrick had seen the boy somewhere earlier, possibly the strategy meeting for this whole war they were embroiled in. Of course Fredrick was sleeping with dots on his eye lids the whole time and didn’t get a thing they were talking about. But he mostly lived his life on the fly anyways. Details just complicated things. “Yo Tor! Who’s the kid?” he inquired. (Because ya know...Tori is waaay the hell too long of a name lol) |

Ellie sighed and straightened, wincing as a blot of pain raced up her back. "Ah well...better alive and in pain than dead. Ugh, after this is over, I'm going to have to take another bath, aren't I? Lovely..." Seeing a few Ferinus gathered at the town limits, she looked back to the others. They all seemed to be okay, if a little dirty. Ruel was doing a surprisingly good job leading the villagers, Brooke was smacking the creatures down with ease and Jake was talking to himself, but otherwise fine. She noticed him walking toward her and smirked. "Hey, nutcase! You're scaring the humans with all that imaginary friend stuff. Mind toning it down until this is over?" It may have been mean, but she really didn't mean any hurt by it. She gestured to the town limits. "There are a few left out there. Should we go after them? I mean, even if we let them run away, they'll just come back with greater numbers later." |

Brooke wiped off her bloodied hands on a patch of clean snow, the bodies of several dead Ferinus laying scattered around her. She was trying her very best not to look at them, but it was impossible to avoid the dark stains of blood in the snow and on her clothes. When the Ferinus had weakened, the brunette had taken the chance to dispatch as many as she could. Despite everything, Brooke let herself smile a little. Things almost seemed to be turning in their favor. At that moment, one of the remaining Ferinus pounced, sinking its claws into her arm. Brooke shouted, swerving out of its way and kicking it in the side of the head. The monster fell to the ground, squealing and twitching unpleasantly. Brooke looked down at her arm, seeing the skin already beginning to reform over the cuts. She hadn't been damaged beyond a cosmetic level. Okay, it was fine to be optimistic about winning. That didn't mean she could let her guard down. Looking around to make sure there weren't anymore Ferinus lurking in the nearby snow, Brooke began heading back towards Ruel and the others. |

Atop a certain hill at the edge of a certain town, a certain Cylon watched as the tide began to turn for the worse for the rift creature horde. Emotions were not foreign to Centurions. In fact, they were well aware of them, as they had felt for decades before they had gained the ability to think. What he felt now was not what Khyron would call a happy sensation. Actually, it fit along more in the line of displeased, or that of a man who’s just bet all his money on a race horse only to watch the drunken jokey ride it in the wrong direction around the track. Suffice to say, he was not amused. He would show Tori he was worthy…even if he had to deal with these heroes himself. The few ferinus that had stayed behind watched with detached interest as Khyron clomped toward the town through the snow. His metal skin impervious to the cold wind that howled around them. “Come With Me.” He said gesturing to Fred in a firm but polite way. He didn’t even turn to see if the human was following him. She will acknowledge me this time… -- Her touch was cold. But then so was every part of Tori. Elias face showed nothing as he scampered off back into the town, flipping and scampering around the retreating ferinus and disappearing into the catch of buildings. Only for his small lithe form to reappear in a flash of red and brief screams. Elias stood over the body of a man, red dripping from his hatchet and falling in beads from his hair. The startled defenders just gapped at him like guppies. Hadn’t they just been winning? Perhaps Elias didn’t get the memo. Apparently the first scream was good enough for an encore, because more soon followed. It was just like old times. A man was on his knees staring at where his hands had once been. The battlefield was like others he had played at, though these people were really bad at the game. But it was fun none the less… Then something caught his eye. Despite what you would think someone should do when faced with angry men rushing toward you with weapons drawn, Elias smile grew until it spread from ear to ear. “RUEL~!” He squeed with enthusiasm that would have put a group of fan girls to shame. He was very happy to see her. Dodging the first of his attackers with little trouble, the boy lopped the man’s arm off and began to run toward the girl, who appeared to be directing the other funny people. Oh this was so wonderful! She was here and they could have fun and maybe even play again~! “Rueeeeelly~!” He shouted happily, lopping off a man’s legs before decapitating another guy as he ran gleefully toward her. -- Jake flinched at the nutcase remark, looking away for a moment before looking back with a small smile. “I see you managed to stay alive.” He said stopping next to her and flicking a bit of ferinus out of her hair. He glanced at the retreating forms of the scattered ferinus horde. “It’s too risky to go after them, and I don’t feel comfortable leaving those inside the hall unguarded.” While the building may have been intact, all it would take was one hole and a single ferinus could do untold levels of damage. The hopes of this entire town rested inside that building. The boy gestured to the shouts and sounds of dying rift creatures at the edge of town. “Besides, Ruel seems to be handling them pretty well. I think we might just be in the clear Ellie.” He gave both her and Brooke a cheery smile and managed to trade it in for his trademark grin. “I think even Karl would be impressed with us.” Not a single one of my friends are dead…and we’re winning. Maybe my Luck has changed after all… Jake socked Ellie playfully in the shoulder. “You look good in black.” He teased as that was not her cloth’s original color. It had made a sudden transition shortly after this whole mess had started. …the ferinus crept closer and closer, and then as if hearing some unspoken command the small group charged toward the Town hall and the wooden stairs that lead to the barricaded door. Of the few towns people to have stayed behind when the rest went ahead, many were down in a matter of moments leaving our heroes the only things standing between those terrible claws and the innocents inside. The boy whirled around. “Brooke! Get inside and seal those doors! Barricade them, spot-weld them, hold them closed if you have to but don’t open them for anything!” Eyes flashed across the pack, his hand slowly drawing the large knife from its sheath. He backed until he was right next too Ellie at the base of the wooden stare case. “Well one thing’s for sure, life with you guys is never dull.” The ferinus stalked toward them crouched low to the ground, licking their chops. Jake could have sworn one even had a bib tied around it’s neck. “No matter what happens, we can’t let even a single one get inside…and Ellie? Watch your tail okay?” Rivalry that they had, he'd prefer that it stayed that way. After all, looking for a new rival to taunt was hard to do when you were universe hopping. Then they pounced. |
