The boy smiled happily at Ruel, completely unfazed by the fact that they had just survived a disaster. “Okay!” he said. “Stand back~!” The boy scooted over to where Ruel had been chiseling and coiled his legs.

Everything was fuzzy. The world around Jake dark and blurry as his head did its best to get off the merry go round it was currently duck-taped to. As consciousness floated in and out of his grasp he vaguely remembered what had happened. Images of ferinus, claws, and a single glowing red eye, before the world had turned white with snow.

He felt warmth beneath him, and remembered that he had tried to shield Ellie. As he began to fade from consciousness again he felt relieved when he heard her voice.

She’s okay…she’s…o…kay….. Then everything turned gray. He wished that the world would just come into focus already, all this fuzz was making feel like he was in a stuffed animal factory.

A few feet away from where Jake and Ellie were, the snow exploded billowed outward and then popped like bubble. Elias poked his head out and looked around and grinned.

“Time to come out Ruel~”

Ruel was only too thankful to get out of that snowy cave and out onto semi-solid land. When she reached the surface, she let out a sigh of relief at the sight of her other companions alive and well.

However, seeing her friends reminded her once again of Jumper. "Hang on, Elias," she called, catching his arm. "I need to get that cure still, remember?" Not without struggle, she got to her knees and turned the boy around so that he couldn't look at anyone but her. The battle was over, and despite everything she'd said, it was a win.

And then there was a shriek from the sky. Ruel looked up to see a white dragon-like Ferinus diving towards the ground. At the last second, the beast spread it's wings and landed heavily on the snow, crushing the skull of an Obsessive Fang beneath one clawed foot. It lifted one wing, allowing the rider to dismount. Ruel recognized her.

"Well done, everyone," Tori exclaimed, stepping in front of the rift Fredrick was running towards. When the teen got close, she snatched him by the collar of his shirt. "But we aren't finished yet, are we, Fredrick?" Tori asked, dismissing the rift behind her. "Of course not. There's one last thing to do, and I'm giving you the honors.

Turning Fredrick around, the woman pointed at the young girl that he had saved. "You see, there's a problem here: she's still alive. Did I tell you to save anyone? Of course not! So go over there and finish the job." With that, she gave him a had push away from her and turned back to the others.

Hazel eyes landed on Elias, and Tori crouched down. "Come here, child," she encouraged, holding out a hand, the fuzzy white coat that he wore earlier materializing. "You've done very well and I'm very proud of you." She grinned and looked at Ruel. "It sounds like you were right the whole time, dear. Karl really should have listened to you yesterday; you had a point. You may have exhausted the others, but I've been observing from above throughout the battle and conserving my energy."

Eyes narrowing with rage, Ruel clenched her jaw and simply glared at the woman. There was no way they could defeat her in their current state - she'd heard about this woman from Jake and Brooke after they fought her in Tokyo. She was difficult to defeat even when they were fully rested. They didn't stand a chance now.

"I know what you're thinking, Soldier Girl," Tori chided. "Yes, you did end up losing this battle but I'm not going to kill any of you. But there is something I would like to tell you: if none of you had come here, I probably wouldn't have wiped out this village or even hurt anyone. It's true, if you had just stayed in that cabin where it was safe, none of these people would've died."

"I don't believe you," Ruel spat out, hands clenching. "The Ferinus were attacking the village before we even arrived! You're a heartless bitch and you would've done what you pleased!"

Shrugging, Tori shook her head. "You're only partly right. I'd sent scouts out to see if you were actually coming and when they confirmed that you were, then and only then did I start attacking his village. You can't judge people until you've gotten to know them.

"But enough talk. I have better things to do." Her gaze went from Jake to Ellie and then over to the city hall. Someone was missing. Tori glanced behind her, but she still couldn't find any trace of her guardian. "Khyron? Where are you?"

Fredrick had seen Tori heading down to the ground on her dragon but his mind was on getting out of there as quick as possible. His bubble that shielded his psyche from the heinous acts he was committing had burst and he was sick to his stomach. Unfortunately fate was too cruel to let his day end there.

Tori landed in front of the rift and promptly shut it on him.

"Well done, everyone, but we aren't finished yet, are we, Fredrick? Of course not. There's one last thing to do, and I'm giving you the honors. You see, there's a problem here: she's still alive. Did I tell you to save anyone? Of course not! So go over there and finish the job."

And with that she pushed him back towards the girl. His legs wouldn’t comply however; they were as cold and lifeless as the land surrounding him. And the push turned more into a shove as he fell face first into the snow only inches from the girl.

He lifted himself up slowly and found the girl just staring blankly at the snow below her, her tears had dried and now was only a shell of what she once was.

It was now that Fredrick had gotten a better look at her that he noticed little things, such as her eyes, they were the brightest green the young musician had ever seen. It shouldn’t have been this way; it should have been just another normal day. She would have gone out, done her daily chores and then gone on to play with the other children that lived in the town. In a few years she would have settled down with one of the boys in the village and led a nice quiet normal life.

Instead she had everything wiped away, this village would never be able to return to its blissful way of living, all the people that still remained would become refugees of a war they didn’t understand and by every right had no part of. And knowing the distance from one small settlement to another half of them might not survive the journey.

No, Fredrick wouldn’t let that happen either. He stood straight up and drew his guitar to the ready. He would release this girl from her pain; maybe even return her to the family that she had lost. Yes, he was doing her a favor by ending it now. “All part of making a better world” the deepest recesses of his brain told him cheerily.

He rose his hand high above his head, and just as it was about to fall a ghost from the past entered his head.

Oi!...Freddie! Think about what you are doing here! This be a dangerous road you’re walking. What you do in the next few minutes will decide who you become. I'm not going to stop you, no, I think I've taught you enough that this is a cold hard world we live in. Every decision you make shapes it in your own image however. And this is one decision…you can never take back

Fredrick’s head broke out in a cold sweat, the voice he heard was that of a dead man, nevertheless he spun around in circles looking for whoever said that. But no one was there of course.

He turned back to the girl, She just looked back up at him with death in her eyes.

“Its not right! Those eyes should be filled with happy things! Just leave her be! Get out of this crazy cult while you still can!” One half of his head screamed.

“No! She must die! If you don’t listen to everything that, that winged woman and Arco says then you will never get that perfect world you desire! One where this girl would never have to die like this! You can help her Fredrick! All it takes is one strum of your guitar. There’s nothing to it!” the other half redoubled.

And it went like this for a while. The world around him began spinning before his eyes. First he was staring at the girl, Then Tori arguing with Ruel, next to Elias, then the destroyed town, the church that had fallen over, the bodies of the villagers he helped kill, then the cycle began repeating itself. His head never stopped arguing however. Somewhere in the midst he saw the face of his father laughing at him like he was 7 years old again.

He didn’t want any of this; he wanted to be somewhere warm; dreaming of a life he would never have, and his goddamned head wouldn’t shut up…Shut up…SHUT UP….

“SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!” He screamed at nothing.

He was falling to pieces, the droning voice of his head wouldn’t stop.

But then, silently, gracefully, and peacefully the girl spoke.

“…Just do it”

Three words and she placed her forehead down in the snow, exposing the back of her neck.

With wild eyes the world righted itself, and the voices abruptly stopped. The musician looked down at the girl. Then he saw he was right where he was at the beginning, In fact…he never even dropped his arm from it’s position.

It had grown cold and stiff from being held aloft for so long and the girl had wanted him to just make up her mind. She had wanted to die, No child as young as her should ever want that!

This was too much, he just let his arm fall, however as if taking a mind of its own was headed straight for the strings. Just before they struck Fredrick would have sworn on a bible he heard someone shout “Oi!”.

It made an awful “CLUNG!” sound that lingered through the air for miles. The small girls head began rolling some inches from where her body had plumped down in the snow.

Then Fredrick fell to his knees and began to cry.

Ellie shifted a tiny bit. She heard movement in the background and tilted her head to see what it was. Ruel and a small boy had popped out from the snow. The dark haired girl seemed injured, but alive. Ellie was about to call out to her when she heard the beat of large wings. Instinctively, she curled herself tighter to the semi-conscious Jake.

She watched the exchange between Tori and some guy....wait..wasn't that the guy from the hot springs?! She wanted to do something but the sight of the little girl...why didn't she run?! It looked like he wasn't going to do it but...no..."No!" She shouted, only for it to be too late....she could only stare in horror. How...how could things turn this bad? She shook from pain as she felt the urge to get sick grow. The cat girl took some comfort from her earlier decision not to eat anything before battle.

This...this was too much. Maybe this is why Rosseau made her promise never to join in the war. It was terrible....far too awful...

“Cure? What cure?” Elias chirped, blinking and turning his head sideways. “Oh, are you talking about that vial-thingy Uncle Arco gave me~? Cause Auntie Tori told me to smash it~!” The boy grinned as if he had accomplished some feat of greatness, completely oblivious to the reality of what he had just said.

Then Tori arrived.

The boy looked from Tori to Ruel then back to Tori, unsure of whom he was supposed to stick with. He stood there with a puzzled look on his face. Elias wanted to stay with Ruel, she was nice to him and he liked her a lot. Auntie Tori was nice too, and gave him plenty of people to play with. The boy honestly didn’t know what to do, his flinched when Fred killed the girl, memories flicking across his minds eyes, and took an unintentional step back Towards Ruel.

Jake’s vision finally cleared as Tori and Ruel conversed. His cheeks reddening slightly as he noticed Ellie curled up against him. He almost laughed. Here they were having just survived a major engagement with the enemy and he still had enough of his wits to be embarrassed.

Then Ellie yelled. He was too slow to witness the child’s death, but the outcome said it all. He gritted his teeth and gently pushed Ellie off and managed to make it to his feet. This winged woman again…the crazy nutcase was the leader of this, her comments about it being the heroes fault stung deep. Because Jake knew that it wasn’t the others fault. It was his. The curse…

Light green eyes glared at the winged witch in front of him, his fist clenched around the handle of his knife, which had mysteriously managed to find its way back to him, despite the avalanches best attempts. Jake hobbled forward to stand in between the winged monster and the girls, in some moronic gesture of heroism. He wobbled and nearly fell, but managed to stay upright before brandishing his knife.

“Shut up.” He growled, dragging a half-smirk up, ignoring its protests to being put into the spotlight. “You bug me lady…I’m tired of your voice. If you’re going to try and beat us up, go ahead. Just don’t try to bore us to death.” He braced himself, half-smile locked in place so it couldn’t get away. Not to say it didn’t try, but the shackles of desperate heroism are well forged, and occasionally came with a discount of one’s life.

Jake smiled, an expression against everything he was feeling at that moment, but it was his weapon, it was his shield. A flimsy shield but bravado was all he had left.

Ruel felt completely defeated. She hung her head and pounded tired fists into the snow before falling onto it altogether. Elias didn't have the cure and this woman in front of her was the one who told him to smash it. The cool ground felt good against her flushed cheeks, her eyes closed as the failure smashed into her: the fact that Jumper was going to die.

"J-just go, Elias," she muttered quietly, looking up at him through slits. "Thanks for keeping me alive, but there's nothing you can do anymore. Just go back with that woman."

The look on Tori's face was one of amusement. "See Elias? The dear girl is tired of playing already... but we aren't done yet." Eyes flicked over to where Jake wielded his knife as if he could do any damage to her. Lifting up one hand, she snapped her fingers and black rope, similar to the stuff that bound the heroes in Gotham City, wrapped around the boy's wrists and halfway up his arms.

The same thing happened with Ellie and Ruel, though those two seemed too exhausted to fight back. "There's one last thing to do, Elias," Tori spoke evenly, eyes drifting over the last standing building. "There's one last person in the town hall, and I know you're more than capable of rounding her up. Don't hurt her or any of the others in there, though, as we all have our plans. Just capture the cyborg and place her in the cell we've arranged. Can you do that for me? And when you're done, take these three to their own cells. We wouldn't want them catching frostbite out here or anything now, would we? Make them comfortable."

The woman tossed the fluffy white coat aside - it seemed as though the boy didn't want it at the moment, and then scanned the surroundings carefully. Hazel eyes briefly rested on a slightly higher mound of snow than other places but then moved on to stare at the captured prisoners, gloating over her win.

In her weariness, Ruel was vaguely aware of the bindings around her wrists, but at that moment, she could care less. If they wanted to lock her up, then go right ahead. All she wanted right then was to be alone and not have to deal with the others when they realized that Jumper's life was as good as over.

Ellie watched Jake, confused and slightly worried. Was he trying to get himself killed?! Struggling to her feet, she was once again surrounded by the black ropes. She glared at Tori but silently thanked her home deity that the powerful being hadn't just killed them.

In the meantime, she was just too tired to struggle. Glancing down at the blood-soaked hole in her coat, she wondered if it would get some weird infection if she didn't treat it. Maybe she would die. Well, at least it would mean she could get some sleep now....Vaguely she wondered if Jumper had gotten her cure....if the Irregular rift was closed....if Karl was okay....Her eyes started to close and her body slumped. She couldn't stay awake anymore if she tried.

Fredrick eventually stopped crying and stood up very shakily. The snow, wind chill, and his ripped jeans did not mix well. He looked over to Tori who had just finished rounding up the group of people he met at the hot springs.

He then placed his guitar back on his back, he didnt want to look at it anymore. He worked his way over to where Tori was standing, he somehow found the strength to say.

"Alright my task here... is finished...I'm going home...or thats what I'm calling it at least"

He then hobbled his way over to a rift he summoned. Before walking through he glanced over at the girls body. It was already being covered in snowdrifts, soon she would be completely buried.

She didnt deserve that and you know it!

You know full and well that if he didnt kill her then Tori would have! And it probably wouldnt have been as quick.

Fredrick quickly opened up a rift and jumped through it. He tried to think of music to drown out his own thoughts. It didn't work.

And like that, Jake went down. His muscles giving way to let gravity take it’s natural course. The blonde crumpled to the ground without any resistance. All strength he had evaporated. His eyes fluttered shut even as they absently watched Fred disappear through a rift.

Max...

--

Elias shook his head as if coming out of a daze. “Okay auntie Tori!” he called with a smile before scampering up to the town hall. He knocked on the door. “Laaaady! Come out lady! Auntie Tori says you need to come out noooow~!” The boy frowned and knocked again.

“Pleeeease?!”

--
Even as Elias ran off to do his job and Jake collapsed like so much dead weight, a soft thud was heard from the direction of the fallen tower. The rubble began to tremble
Pebbles and loose bricks tumbled free before finally growing quiet again. Then in a shower of mortar and stone a metallic hand burst through the debris grasping skyward. Moments later, the owner of said hand hauled the rest of his body free of the debris.

Khyron dragged himself across the ground toward Tori. The stone tower had done a number on his body. Armor that could resist heavy gunfire and almost any blade sat mangled and bent, with the entire left side of his body resembling a car after being hit by a truck. Dark red fluid trailed from the tower to where his damaged form now sat. Unable to stand on shattered legs, all he could do was to hold up his upper body with his one working arm.

“L-l-l-l-laaaaaaaaaad-d-dy T-toreee.” The damage had hurt him badly, and if he had he been any lesser machine, he would have fallen apart then and there.

The cylon trembled as it looked up at her. “F-f-forg-give m-m-mee…”

At the knock on the door, the villagers in the town hall collectively jumped. It might have actually been funny if the situation had been anything-else-ever-at-all. As it was, Brooke barely kept her cool. First, the crashing and rumbling outside that she had been continuously reassuring the refugees was definitely not an avalanche, and now someone was knocking on the door.

'Hello, perfect horror movie scenario.' She thought wearily, eying the wooden doors. Still, the sounds of the Ferinus were gone. Brooke felt a spark of hope. Had they won? It could very well be Jake or Ellie or Ruel knocking. The brunette turned around and smiled at the villagers, giving a nearby child a quick hug.

"I think it's over, hold on." She said. There was a murmur in the small crowd, first uncertain, then hopeful. Brooke walked over the door and cocked her head, concentrating on the sounds outside the door. A muffled voice seemed to be calling for her to come out, though she couldn't recognize it through the thick wood. Cautiously, she reached forward and unlocked the door, before pushed it open a few inches and poking her face out.

"Oh...God." She breathed, gaping at the expanse of white before her. The remains of ruined buildings poked out of the snow, as well as, here and there, the bodies of humans and Ferinus alike. Brooke blinked, attempting to wrap her head around the situation. What had happened, who was hurt, what would the villagers do now...

Brooke shook her head, snapping back to the present. There was a reason she had opened the door. Tearing her vision away from the devastated village, she looked down to find...a little boy?

"Oh my gosh." With a slight shove, the doors opened wider (though, not wide enough for the men and women assembled behind her to see much of the outside). Brooke crouched down so she was eye level with the boy, quite visibly shocked by the sheer amount of blood coating him. 'He's just a kid!' The cyborg thought. 'This...this shouldn't happen.'. Out loud, she only managed, "Oh no...Oh, what happened to you? What's your name? What..."

Brooke was at a loss for words.

“Hi~! My name is Elias~!” The boy said to Brooke with a cheery smile. “Auntie Tori said I should come and get you~”

Now, seeing as Brooke had no reason to assume that the boy was hostile, it is unfair to presume that she is either incompetent nor foolish. In fact, I believe that most of our readers would respond in the exact same fashion were a child to arrive at their door covered in blood.

Unless, that is, they noticed the hatchet he held behind his back.

The boy’s grin widened. “Time to go lady~!” he chirped, his hand flashing out to snag her wrist. His muscles bunched, pulling on his artificially enhanced bones, torquing to create the leverage he needed. Simply put, Elias grabbed Brooke and hurled the unsuspecting girl into a freshly opened rift.

“All done~!” He laughed, hopping back over to where Tori and the others were, his eyes meandering over Ruel. He didn’t know what auntie Tori wanted with her and the others. Maybe play or some adult reason, but he knew he didn’t want her to cry again.

When that woman told Elias to go fetch Brooke, Ruel nearly yelled out for him to stop only to realize that nothing she said would actually be followed. That woman, Tori or so Elias called her, had the boy wrapped around her finger. Maybe she was the one responsible for the way Elias acted and how he thought hurting people and killing them was "play"!

So, when Elias knocked on the door, Ruel only could hope that Brooke wouldn't answer. However, when she did, her heart sank; she wouldn't know that Elias was not the innocent kid he seemed to be, but rather one of the Contracted. They had never met before, so she couldn't have known.

Brooke was thrown into a rift without a say, allowing Elias to return to their small group. When he looked her way, Ruel just turned her head, refusing to acknowledge him at all.

'Arco will be pleased with me~ Tori reassured herself, grin widening as she watched everything fall into place exactly as planned. However, the grin was shattered as the ground near her almost burst out, her mangled Cylon crawling weakly towards her as if it was his last goal in the life he claimed was his own.

An eyebrow rose as hazel eyes watched the pathetic machine scratch and drag its way over to her side with its single working arm. She was silent as the mauled electronic speech tumbled out in broken syllables and stuttered words, pleading for forgiveness.

"Forgive you?" Tori asked, voice high in mock surprise. "You failed me once again, Centurion! If I were not here, these people"--she gestured at Jake, Ellie and Ruel--"would have succeeded in saving this town. I had to come down here and capture them myself! How can I possibly entrust my duties to you if you have not once succeeded?! No, you are not worthy of my forgiveness. You're proven to be about as useful as the toaster you are."

With that, Tori turned her back to the Cylon, arms crossing tightly across her chest just in time for Elias to run over after his quick adventure with Brooke. "Well done, Elias," she cooed, unfolding her arms to clap her hands together. "You've done well, but there's one last thing to do, alright~? Please take the others back home, but be gentle with them, especially with that cat-like girl over there, okay? I need to have a quick chat with my dear guardian here, so it's best we're left alone."

Elias nodded happily.

“Okie dokey~” The energetic youth gleefully skipped over to the exhausted forms of Jake and Ellie. With one swift kick he punted Jake’s battered form through a freshly open rift and carefully pushed her form through the glowing door before turning back to the last member he was to take home.

It was confusing to him that she wouldn’t look at him. The smile faded away and he tugged on her hand toward the door.

“Time to go Ruelly.” He said softly. “Auntie Tori wants you to come with me, and I want you to come with me. Please Ruelly? I can show you my treasure!” The exuberant smile quickly reappeared at the thought of showing off to his special friend.

--

Khyron’s arm nearly gave out. He had tried his best, given his all, fought with the precision only a machine could accomplish. And still he had failed. Had the inhibiter chip still been installed in him, he would have understood his defeat as it had prevented him from being whole, but now. He had even failed Lady Tori again.

Toaster…

Then she turned her back on him, and something deep inside the cylon froze.

“T-tooooriii! P-p-p-pleeeease! I-I Need Assissssstance.”

His body slumped to the ground as he reached out with his only working arm to try and tug at her leg, his body trembled as strained servos forced themselves to try and work.

Ruel's jaw tightened as she was pulled along, her eyes drilling into the snow. She watched the drops of crimson mix with the dirty white of the avalanche's remains until she felt the somewhat-familiar tingling of the rift energy as her skin made contact.

It was pointless to struggle against the boy, and besides, she was too damn tired to even try at this point. Whatever awaited her and the others was certainly not going to be fun, but she wasn't going to be out in the cold anymore, or at least she hoped not.

For a brief moment, she wondered if Jumper was still alive.

------------

Her index finger twirled around her long strands of hair as she watched Elias take the other back to Broken Versailles as Khyron moaned weakly behind her. Tori stepped away from his long fingers just as he reached for her, and it wasn't until the last of the rift fragments disappeared completely before she turned back to the Centurion.

"You need assistance?" She copied, freeing her fingers from her hair to rest her hands on her hips. "Then I know exactly how I can help you." With that, Tori crouched down next to Khyron and let a twisted smile come to her face.

"You see that one last building over there?" she asked, pointing at at the town hall. "The remaining villagers are still cowering inside there and, seeing as they have no town left, it'd be inhumane to let them live, don't you think? So, on that note, you can go crawl over there and harvest their life energy for me. Only after that will I even consider assisting you."

Standing up, she called a rift to her and then stepped partially into it. "Just come back when you're finished, and then maybe I'll help you," she called back, faking a bored tone before disappearing altogether to greet the new arrivals and ensure that they were satisfied with their new home.

“T-t-tori! Wwwwaait!” But Khyron’s calls went unheeded. When she turned and walked through the portal, something inside the machine actually froze.

Tori! Toooor-ri! Please! I-i-zzzzzt. I won’t f-fail ag-g-ain! Waaaaait!!” Desperately the fallen cylon clawed at the snow trying to reach the glowing door before it closed. His single working limb weakened by the towers fall barely had the strength to lift his body even a few inches. The single red eye did it’s best to rove back and forth but could only make it halfway, damage to his visor forcing it to stop short, effectively blinding him on the left side of his body. His legs were little more then twin trails of metal and crimson fluid.

“Tori…” He moaned, the vocalisor weakening as his damaged systems rerouted power and energy from one part of his body to what sections could be salvaged.

Khyron’s hand lift and stretched toward the portal even as it began to close. Frantic scratching did little to budge his armored form as he tried to move.

“W-wait! D-don’t l-l-l-l-leeeeeave me!” And then the portal closed and it grew silent.

“Wait….wait….zzt” The battered machine slumped to the ground, His one working arm still struggling to move him. He sat there moaning her name before his voice finally cut out, the power diverted to deal with repairs near the core of his body.

Please…..don’t leave me…

And then all was quiet.
