The City's Library contained thousands of books. Most people simply brought all their books there for safe keeping. The prized gems of its collection, however, were the personal journals of the early days of the City. Among these books, there was one that stood out most.

This book was also a journal about an expedition into the Wastes. Long, long ago, a group of brave souls went out into the Wastes to see what was out there. Years passed and eventually, only one person returned. He was stark raving mad and died not long after arriving...yet..in his hand was a journal describing everything that had occurred while the group was gone. No one had attempted a trip out of the City since then.

Tabitha would spend days studying each page of this journal. It was kept in a special glass cabinet along with the other journals, which was covered in all sorts of protective charms and runes. Only Tabitha could open it and there was a special room meant for reading the journals that one had to sign in and out of. It and the other journals were as safe as possible.

At least...everyone thought as much until they were all stolen one night.

Tabitha awoke early as always. After dressing and eating, she left for her job at the Library. Once she arrived, to her horror, the door was open. She rushed inside, hoping that nothing would be broken or missing. Luckily, it seemed that everything was there...until she arrived at her desk. The cabinet, which had been warded with every protective charm and rune she knew, had been broken into. The glass was shattered and the journals were gone.

The first thing Tabitha did was faint. Then, after one of her assistants arrived, she was woken up. The second thing she did, once conscious, was put in a desperate call to the guard. This is where the story begins.

It was a day like any other day. Only not.

Ferdinand Faust climbed the stairs in front of the library with practiced ease. He held himself as a man who knew his place in the world, that is to say to be between the honest citizen and the ruffians who dared threaten his city's peace. There was something to be said about Ferdinand, in that he also radiated confidence and a general sense of "i know what i'm doing, so come along!" and this phenomina seemed to be contagious if one were to work along side him for a long enough time.

Only one man seemed to be completely immune to Captain Faust's aura and that man was his assistant, Lieutenant Stibbins. Stibbins was a practical man, and calm under most circumstances, which was why he made such a good assistant to the Captain, who certainly was not. In effect he made a very effect counterweight to his commander's more...er, whimsical nature.

"You called Tabitha?!" Ferdinand bellowed after opening the door only to be "shuushed" by some of the staff.

"You called Tabitha?" He whispered after being only briefly embarrassed.

Stibbens rolled his eyes.

Tabitha looked up from her seat. She was sitting at a free table, a teacup in her hand. One of her assistants had made her the tea to calm her nerves. "Ah, y-yes. T-thank you f-for coming so q-quickly." With a light clink, she placed the cup on its matching saucer and stood. "W-we've had a b-b-bit of a b-break in..." She nodded to the two members of the Guard, stifling a cough.

"O-over here, we k-kept some important j-journals....the c-cabinet was sealed w-with magic a-a-and an a-alarm w-would have g-gone off if a-anyone had b-b-broken into the L-Library...." The area had been roped off so that none of the evidence would be disturbed. "I d-don't know how t-this happened....b-but those books a-are vital a-and we n-need them b-b-back...I h-have a t-tracking r-rune on them j-just in c-case, but it's n-not v-very accurate...it c-can only get u-us within 4 o-or 5 blocks o-of them..."

She turned and her expression was nothing short of pathetic. She coughed and folded her hands. "P-please tell me y-you can h-help me find t-t-them..."

Ferdinand beamed. "Of COURSE! We're here to serve the people, arn't we Stibbins?"

Stibbins deadpanned.

"That we are sir."

"So! Could you lend us a hand with those tracking runes? I assure you you will be utterly safe in our care."

Stibbins leaned in and whispered in Tabby's ear. "Plus he's not so good with magic..."

"What was that Stibbins?"

"Oh nothing sir! Just telling her things will be alright."

"Good man! Now, lead the way Tabitha!"

Tabitha blushed slightly and nodded, coughing. On her wrist, several henna runes lit up, becoming like a see-through cord. The young woman started to follow this cord out of the library and into the City. "Hmm....t-this way...." She turned and kept walking, focused on her runes. The city itself was bustling as always, people skittered along to get to their destinations. Some wondered why the head of the Guard was with the Librarian, but it looked important so they kept their distance.
