She had healed surprisingly fast. Anya wasn't quite sure what they had put her on, but in just over a week most of her injuries from the bombing incident may as well have never existed at all.

But still the medical staff looking after her insisted that she stay put regardless. A patient was a patient after all.

After the hospital in Thea's Plaza collapsed in on itself, every patient had been moved to a complex over in Hesperides Gardens. Every other hospital within the area had been temporarily evacuated so that Elite-teams could ensure that no more bombs had been placed within them.

It was out there that Anya wanted to be, not cooped up in a room being tended to by others like some sort of liability. She didn't need their pity nor did she need their help.

Now having tested her legs and their ability to properly walk, the redhead took the first opportunity to unplug the wires connected to her and shimmy out the nearest window. From there it was a simply matter of climbing down the neighbouring and into the shadows of the bushes below.

However in her escape she had as usual failed to take note of her surroundings- Failed to take note of just who she had run into as she broke from the cover of the foliage protecting her.

Hector had been meandering around outside the wanna-be hospital in the Gardens for almost two hours, trying to find a way in. They wouldn't let him inside, no matter how much he insisted, no matter what he said, no matter how much he shouted at him. He supposed it made since, in a way, that they were upping security and stopping the average citizen from entering unless they were injured.

The dark skinned teenager was just a few steps short of thinking about stealing one of the Elite armbands and lying his way inside when a familiar burst of red hair appeared from the bushes alongside the makeshift hospital.

Hector stopped dead in his tracks, blinking in surprise, "Anya? What are you doing out of the hospital? And why were you...climbing out of the bushes?

No, no, no, no, no...

Anya literally froze in place as sirens blared loudly inside her head. Of all the people she had been hoping to avoid, the person in front of her was on the very top of the list.

Despite having been mostly healed, evidence of the redhead's time within emergency care were still present in the various bandages wrapped around her body as well as the obvious hospital-gown worn by every patient in the building behind her.

If anything she was at least grateful that he had not seen her earlier in the week. At least now she was able to properly walk, and being able to do so she quickly backtracked her way into the cover of bushes.

She closed her eyes tightly, praying with all her might that he hadn't seen her and that this encounter just now was a trick of her imagination. But at the same time, she knew that such hopes were futile.

"Please go away," she called out, not daring to open her eyes.

Hector felt a pang of hurt at her words, made even more painful by the look of horror that had appeared on her face when she'd seen him. He swallowed and took a step back, thinking that this was right, that leaving her alone was right, that giving her the space she needed was right.

And then he stopped himself because, no, that wasn't right. Anya had been there for him countless times. He was going to be there for her.

Clenching his jaw, the dark skinned teenager edged forward and pushed the leaves out of the way to see her with her eyes shut tight against the world. God, but she looked vulnerable like that, wrapped in bandages and in that hospital gown. Hector never through he'd ever find himself thinking of Anya as being vulnerable. Something hitched, clenched, shook inside him, foundations sliding ever so slightly.

"Anya," He said in a low voice, paused, and then whispered, "Hey, you wanna get out of this place?"

What was she doing? She was acting like a child- a pitiful and pathetic child. She didn't want anyone's pity, nor did she need anyone's help. That's what she would constantly tell herself as she faced the world around her.

She opened her eyes ever so slightly, green eyes blankly staring down at the grass in front of her. She had to be strong. She couldn't let Hector continue to see her like this.

But still she wouldn't move. Her body wouldn't move.

Instead her hand reached up to grab a hold of Hector's arm, pulling him closer down towards her. "Would you stay with me? Just for a little?"

Hector blinked in surprise and then crawled into the bushes with his girlfriend. Any other time, any other place, this might have felt awkward and wrong and bordering on something indecent. But it didn't feel that way now. Right now it felt like something he needed to do.

He curled up beside Anya, pulling her into his arms, onto his lap, holding her close, trying to be as solid for her as she was for him. He pressed a light kiss to her cheek and said,

"I'll stay with you for as long as you want. I won't leave, promise."

Anya let herself bask in the warmth of Hector's embrace, snuggling up to his chest if only for a moment before realizing just where she was and what she was doing.

It's not that she was unaccustomed to being physically close to her boyfriend, after all they had shared their respective spaces countless times before. But given the situation and her current state of mind, a different set of alarm bells then went off in her head.

"W-What're you doing?!" she yelped, suddenly shoving herself away and jumping out of the bushes without regard for who may or may not be watching.

After a few ragged breaths the redhead then just as quickly calmed herself down, realizing that her action just now might have been a tad uncalled for.

"Um... sorry," she said, nervously squeezing her upper arm. "H-how are you doing, Hector?"

An awkward question, but at least it appeared that her mind had somewhat recovered.

Hector fell back as Anya scrambled out of his arms, sitting sprawled in the bushes as she darted out of his reach. He stared at the space where she'd vanished through the leaves, eyes wide, mouth open slightly, feeling incredibly guilty. He'd messed this up, of course he had and (something cracking slightly inside) maybe this had all been one-sided (a little unstable) and he'd been wrong to cling to her like that (hurt). It hadn't been fair to her.

"H-how are you doing, Hector?"

The teenager swallowed, cleared his throat, and shifted on the dirt and leaves, straightening up but still remaining on the ground, dusting his hands off on his buckled coat.

"Um. Fine, I thin--yeah, I'm okay." He bit his lip, staring at his lap, feeling tangled and that this was all going completely wrong and why couldn't he be strong like her and why, oh why, was this so hard?

"I'm more worried about you. They wouldn't let me see you. I kept and asking and they kept telling me no. I was worried. I should have been there for you and I wasn't and I'm sorry I wasn't." God, if only his mouth would shut up, "M-maybe you should get back in the bushes before someone sees you..."

In an instant Anya was back in her original position under the bushes and next to Hector.

"I'm... I am fine," she said, sitting down and despite her better judgement rested her head against his shoulder. This was dangerous. The more time she spent with him, the more she found herself depending on him. Much too dangerous.

But even so... This was nice.

"You are not the one I want an apology from," she mumbled sleepily under her breath. "People were hurt Hector, and someone needs to take responsibility for them."

Hector swallowed thickly at Anya's words, starkly aware of her head on his shoulder. He tentatively slid an arm around her shoulders, light, brushing, afraid that if he made the wrong move she would jerk away again.

Responsibility.

He could blame James. He could just pin it all on James, the idiot who had blown up the hospital. But it was his fault too. He was a part of the Messiah Complex and he knew better than to target civilians. That's not what they did, that's not how they worked. He should have said something, stopped James, changed his mind.

"It's my fault." He said softly into Anya's ear, "It was the Messiah Complex and it's my fault. No one was supposed to get hurt. You can blame me, if it makes you feel better, I don't mind. Whatever it takes to make you feel better."

"I told you, I am fine," the redhead replied, putting a hand on the arm around her shoulders. She gave her head a soft shake. "Many people depended on that hospital, and now with it gone..." Her voice trailed off.

There was no need to finish that sentence. With the hospital gone, countless Arcadians were suffering as the government attempted to cope with their transitions to the different facilities appropriate to their needs.

"I do not... I don't want to blame you," she said, giving his arm a light squeeze. "I don't know who to blame."

Hector felt sick. He bit his lip hard, closed his eyes, blocking out the world as if not seeing it would fix everything. He shifted closer to Anya and shrugged off his long coat, dropping it over her shoulders a little awkwardly before settling back with his arm around her again.

"Blame anyone you want to." He said and there was a dark undertone in his voice, "I do. The Wisemen. The Academy. The Messiah Complex. Aid--anyone you want to. Or--or we can..." He swallowed, "Or we can just not think about it. We can pretend like it never happened. We can just sit here forever or something and let everyone else do the fighting because I...Anya, I was scared. I thought you...and I couldn't do anything and you...I..."

Hector leaned against her, closed his eyes again, tried to keep the trembling out of his voice,

"I don't want to lose you."

That's right, she was hurting him wasn't she?

She could stop it all right now. Stop fighting, stop hurting, stop making him worry-- she could stop everything. But then, that would mean stopping from moving forward, something she couldn't afford to do.

A dark cloud seemed to cover the green of her eyes as she carefully lifted away the warmth of Hector's arm.

"I'm sorry Hector," she said, her voice wavering despite her best attempts to keep it strong.

This was for the best, wasn't it?

"I don't think we should see each other anymore."

...wasn't it?

Hector thought the world had just dropped out from underneath him.

The universe had just tilted sideways, there was a black hole consuming the sun, the sky was green and the grass was blue, someone had just divided by zero.

This. Wasn't. Right.

The teenager suddenly felt an incredible, desperate want to plunge his hand into the pocket of his coat, clutched feebly in his hand instead of draped over Anya's shoulder, and find his pills. They had made things better before they could make things better again.

Instead he clenched his fingers as tightly as he could into his coat and looked at the ground. There was a huge, empty, black blot where his insides used to be and it was sickening. He drew in a shaky breath, felt ice creeping over his lungs, squeezing his heart, crushing everything he'd worked so hard to build. The ground blurred and he blinked his eyes fiercely. This was not how this was supposed to go.

"No." He said, his voice only quivering a little bit, "No. That's not...no." He looked up at her, watery hazel eyes meeting bright green,

"Anya, you are the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm not--I don't take the painkillers anymore, I got better because of you. For you. I have something worth fighting for. I want to make everything better for you because--damn it all, Anya, I love you and I'd do anything for you. But not this, please, please, not this! This isn't going to fix things! Walking away from it isn't going to make it go away! We can make it work! We can, I know we can!"

He was begging, choking, trying so damn hard not to cry because that was weak and he needed to be strong. Strong for himself, strong for Anya, strong for the both of them together.

"Please. Please don't do this." He wanted to grab her, to hold onto her, to never let her go again, but there was ice in his veins and he was frozen solid and he couldn't move if his life depended on it,

"Keep trying, Anya. Don't give on this--on us--on me. Please. Please..."

Seeing Hector beg in front of her like that clicked a trigger in Anya's head.

"Don't make that kind of face," she said with a soft smile. With one hand she reached up and cupped the round of his cheek. "It doesn't suit you, Hector."

She was conflicted. Looking into those hazel eyes before her, she finally understood just how important a role she fulfullied in this boy's world. But it was a role she couldn't fill.

-No.-

"I can't make you happy. I'm going to fight and continue fighting, and all that will do is hurt you more and more." Her voice began to trail into the back of her throat. With a sudden movement the flat of her forehead was then pressed against his own.

-No, stop.-

"You're strong, Hector. Stronger than you give yourself credit for. I'm sure that one day someone that can truly make you happy will be drawn to that strength."

-You coward.-

She turned away, quickly pulling herself once more out of the bushes. "So please, don't make that sort of face. I may not be able to make you happy, but I will abide by my promise to protect you."

She couldn't turn around. If she did he would see the tears streaming down her face. She was running away, she knew that. But even so, a part of her wanted him to stop her, to pull her back before she was too far away. She was weak.

"Be happy, Hector."
