Vance sat outside the dorms, trying to read a book. The key word was trying as nothing on the page was sinking in. He just kept glazing over it, trying to be interested but he just couldn't.

His mind was elsewhere. He kept thinking of the ball and how he messed up horribly. He should of done something when Ackerly and Sven were fighting, but he knew he was helpless. He knew his limits. Getting a weapon wasn't at all a bad idea but... if only he found a closer one. Then he never had to deal with that masked man.

He cringes in on himself at the memory, trying to shut it out. He didn't like remembering how he spoke like he was a 'good guy'. It should be obvious that the Messiah Complex weren't the good guys!

Never mind that he just let him go. And didn't hurt him...

He shuts the book close, squeezing his eyes shut. No. No he couldn't possibly be thinking things like that. He needs to think of ways to be better ready for a fight, because if there was one thing he learned was that a war could spring out of nowhere.

People could die where they feel safest.

But he wasn't sure how to be ready. He hated the idea of carrying a gun around, it was heavy anyways and he wasn't a good aim. And he wasn't sure if he had the time to practice sword play- at lest not so where he'll be nearly as good as Sebastian. All he had was a stupid mimic ability and shields. The later of the which was useful yes, but only if someone where to attack him first.

Setting the book asides he takes a look at his hands. They were small, pale... They didn't look very threatening when he folded them into fists. He was sure he looked silly.

Vance thinks back on the fight and wonders what he could of done differently, when he remembers something he did do. He never needed to use his shield, but... he did use it. In a way.

There was a moment where he shoved that strange man back, when he shoved it against him. It was... fairly effective. Maybe he could...

He looks down and see's a glass bottle. The idea was already stuck in his head as he reached down and touched it. The brown glass turned into a dirty yet translucent liquidity like substance. He could easily snap it into a thin shield, something that could protect his top half easily. But that's not what he wants now.

Focusing, he holds his hand straight in front of him. The orb spasms, and his body tenses, trying to control it. The glass hardens into a more concentrated plate, roughly the size of a DVD disk, hovering in a fixed point in front of his hand.

"I-I did it!" He gets up, seeming very proud of what he did. But... will it even work like this? Looking around, he see's a wall. Oh... no one would mind right? It was just a brick wall after all. He stands timidly in front of it, shifting into a basic boxer position.

Taking a large breath, he pulls back his fist, and hits the wall as hard as he can, putting all his faith that the miniature shield would absorb the impact.

*THUNK*

And... it did. His eyes widened in surprise as he pulls his fist back, seeing that he's actually done damage to the wall. A sliver of rock chips off a brick, clattering onto the ground. This... didn't count as vandalism did it?

He see's that the shield was still intact. That was interesting- glass was normally weaker, but then he only punched once. He felt excited- oh, wouldn't Sebastian like to hear that he wasn't the only one improving his use of his powers! And he just punched a wall and damaged it- Sven might get a kick out of that too~

Smiling, he decides to do it again- and really put his all into it. Seeming more confident, he pulls his fist back, and with all his strength, punches at the wall again.

*TH-CRSSSSSSSSH*

Pain suddenly shoots up his arm, causing Vance to stagger back with a bewildered yelp. The shield actually broke- more then that, it broke and now his hand was bleeding and shaking. He cradles his hand, trying to not be so pathetic as to actually cry, but this really did hurt.

"You...may want to have the nurse look at that." A soft almost hissing voice said from above. A dark shape stirred and leapt down from the roof, landing beside him with barely a sound, the black shroud fading to reveal the form of Herod Asher. One of the more reclusive students at SIN, and one not known to be the friendliest. His golden eyes stared impassively as the other boy cradled his hand.

"The faster you treat it, the faster it will heal..."

He wandered closer eyes darting to the wound itself, examining the extent of the injury with the enhanced depth perception that he attained from his powers, circling Vance as he did.

"You hide your pain well for what you've done, but the question is why do you hide it when you are alone?"

Vance wasn't sure what frightened him more- the sudden realization that he wasn't alone, or the shadowy figure that suddenly appeared next to him. He stumbles back in surprise, bumping up against the back of the bench he was sitting on from before.

"I-I...!" He bites his lip, trying to calm himself. This was a student right? Still he wasn't sure what he should say... it was a startling introduction to say the least.

"You hide your pain well for what you've done, but the question is why do you hide it when you are alone?"

He pulls his throbbing hand in a little closer, wincing in pain doing so. His eyes flicker down and see's that he was bleeding a bit worse then he thought he was. His sleeve was getting stained, and it was starting to frighten him. He really should make his way to the nurse shouldn't he?

He felt like disappearing in on himself out of embarrassment. "I... I just didn't want to be weak anymore." His voice cracked, feeling very very foolish and small.

Herod cocked his head sideways, staring at Vance more intently with one eye, and then turning to stare intently with the other.

"To feel pain is not a weakness. The ability to endure it, and keep going is a sign of strength of character." The other boy wandered closer. "Let me see that." Before Vance had the chance to protest, the dark haired boy's hand shot out and took a hold of his injured arm, pulling it out slowly with surprising force.

"Shiny..." He said softly before his eyes whipped back up to stare dead into Vance's. "Hold still. This is going to hurt, but not as much as if you leave them in and it gets infected." With that one of Herod's hands vanished in a swirl of black mist shortly before a taloned hand reappeared. Then with surprising precision, he began plucking out the shards of glass embedded in poor Vance. He wasn't exactly gentle, but he was efficient, and quick.

Moments later there was a small pile of glass on the bench behind them, and Herod's hand had returned to normal. He let go of the other boy's arm and stepped back.

"You should still have the nurse take a look at it." He didn't seem to be acting hostile, which given his reputation was surprising, but his stance and tone of voice while hushed didn't betray any aggression.

"My name is Herod."

Vance felt uneasy under that stare, and started to fidget. He hadn't felt this shy in a long time but he could just feel that stare on him.

"To feel pain is not a weakness. The ability to endure it, and keep going is a sign of strength of character."

Vance scrunches his face in confusion- was... was he trying to make this a teachable moment? If so, it was sinking in. Kinda. At the moment he felt a little too flustered and light headed.

"Let me see that."

Suddenly, his arm was pulled out from being pressed against his chest. His squeaked in protest, but his voice froze in his throat when suddenly his hand materialized into something that looked like a bird claw. "..O...oh..."

He really didn't need to tell him twice to stay still, he already forgotten how to move now. All he could do was turn his head, and nervously flinch whenever a shard was pulled out. It was funny though, now it just felt numb- his whole arm did actually.

"You should still have the nurse take a look at it."

"My name is Herod."

Vance nods slowly, returning his hand into his now damp sleeve, trying to press against the wounds. "V-Vance... I... um...t-thank you..."

He gets up from leaning against the bench trying to not look at the shards of glass. Yes... He should go to the nurse. "I-I'll....d-do that now..." He felt a bit dizzy now, but he was sure he could manage. As long, of course he ignores just how bad his hand looked- because it wasn't that bad.. hopefully.

Herod began to follow Vance, not fully aware of whether Vance wanted this or not.

"I have to wonder, what were you trying to do?" He said casually as he wandered along. "Given the pieces you broke off with the last few ones, you might have been onto something."

Herod was not entirely aware of the fact that he may be terrifying his new "comrade", but for some reason he felt like accompanying the other boy.

"I-I can... um..." He presses his hand against his sleeve, and tried to wiggle his fingers. They moved. It hurts, but they moved at least. That was good right?

"I... I can make s-shields. With mirrors and... stuff," He fumbles for words, trying his best to explain to the guy that just helped him. He wondered if he was annoyed, but then he was following him, wasn't he? He frightened him, but Herod didn't seem like a bad person at the same time.

"I-I can't fight... I'm awful at it. B-But I thought if I could... make tiny shields, just big enough for my hands, I-I could..." He finds himself going red with embarrassment. "I-It was stupid, e-even if it was a good idea, I'd be no good in a fight anyways. Not if I can just end up hurting myself." He seemed upset at that thought. Yeah, just do the other guys job for him... He might as well just straight up punch himself in the face.

The dark haired boy eyed Vance for a moment, expression one of curiousity.

"You were not wrong in your thinking. At least the first part. Think of it this way, while you might not want to fight, the ability to defend one's self is not a bad thing. If you cannot defend yourself, than you must rely on others. In doing so, you put them in control of your life."

He turned and pointed a finger at Vance.

"They are in control of you. But...if you can defend yourself, that frees you from their control, and...it can free your comrades as well. If they are worrying about you, than they cannot fight at their full strength." he increased his pace so as to open the door for them both. "Do not mistake the desire to fight for strength. Many of histories greatest fighters hated fighting."

He paused to leer at a group of students who were blocking the hallway. The others caught the edge of his look and quickly moved aside. Early on he had shown much of the student body he wasn't to be trifled with, and they gave him a wide berth, which suited him fine.

"The only way to grow stronger, is to work at it. I think you should keep trying." he glanced at Vance's sleeve and then added. "Maybe with a glove next time"

It took a moment, but it stunned him when it sunk in. He never had thought of it like that. Vance looks up at Herod, managing not to flinch when he pointed his finger at him.

He... He was right. He couldn't argue or protest because he was just so right. He quickens his own pace, making sure to keep up with the strange guy.

They enter the building and it seemed he had the same presence as Sven as the crows started to part right then and there under his stare. "I-I'll... I'll keep trying then, thank you Herod." Vance smiles, looking much less hopeless then before. "T-Thank you for the help, a-and for talking to me. It... It gives me a lot to think about, and I will take what you said to heart."

They head towards the nurses office and Vance adds awkwardly, "M-Maybe some time, we should get to know each other a little more? L-Like... hang out?"

Herod turned his head favoring Vance with his right eye again in his strange way, then nodded.

"Sure. It would be nice to chat, plus I will be able to see how your hand is doing." He stared for a moment as if thinking about something than turned. "If you're going to try that again, be sure to wear a glove." He waved as he walked away, the corner of his mouth turning up just the slightest in the hint of a smile. He liked the other boy, his straight honesty, and naive nature were a pleasant change from much of the hyper aggression that radiated from many other students. Plus it hinted at a gentleness that he couldn't help but want to look out for.

"See you later Vance. I'll be around."
