Evan: *walked to Alexa's place from his own. About halfway through the walk, it had began raining, but even as the rain picked up he was in too good a mood to care. He had, as usual, the necklace he'd purchased for Alexa in his pocket as he walked, hoping that someday he'd find a good time to give it to her. He walked up the steps to her house, soaking wet, and knocked at the door casually, as if the rain had no effect on him.* Alexa: *peeks out through the peephole, opens the door, sticks her head out, disappears, and reappears with a towel* You look like a wet cat. Come in. Evan: *without yet moving* I missed a variable, Alexa. Alexa: *eyebrows raise* Oh? *not sure if that's good or bad* Evan: I didn't account for forms of energy other than heat. I missed the variable. *smile grows rapidly on his face* Alexa: I told you you had. Now get inside. *steps back from the door* Evan: *steps in slowly, trying not to drip too much on anything of value. His arms are glowing with excitement* Two days ago I threw away the last set of burned bandages... Alexa: And did you stop - *gestures at his arms, sitting down* Evan: Yes. Electrical energy doesn't burn my hands like thermal does, for obvious reasons. *smiles derpily, drying his hair off with the towel* Alexa: Obvious reasons? Forgive me, I'm no physicist. Evan: Well....because thermal energy produces heat.... Amping it up has no effect other than burning. Electricity intensified as it clings to the hair on the back of my hand, though, has minimal if any backlash at all. Alexa: No electrical burns? Evan: Nothing. I've been practicing by throwing a pair of gloves in the dryer, then using that static. I might singe the gloves if I go really overboard, but I don't need that much energy Alexa: Excellent! *totally hiding relief* In other good news, I spoke to an acquaintance of mine who knows what the Wiseman Council is doing, and to his knowledge, the Slums plan sunk due to insufficient funding. Evan: *sighs in relief* Are.....are you sure? *a tear actually comes to his eye. He's glad that he's already soaking wet so that it's not obvious* Alexa: *hesitates* Reasonably. Evan: *takes a deep breath* How reasonably? Alexa: I heard it from the mouth of Wiseman Alpha himself. Evan: *raises an eyebrow* I spoke to him just the other day. It didn't sound like they were shooting it down yet at that point.... Alexa: I spoke to him slightly more recently than that. *pauses* What were you doing talking to Mr. Lazriel? Evan: I was in the park... Waiting for Mai to show up after her date, and I got a little careless playing with the lights. He saw me and started asking some questions... Alexa: *winces* Friendly questions? Evan: Pretty neutral ones, like what the power did. I gave him some bs answers, then asked him about the initiative. Alexa: Brave. Stupid, but brave. Evan: If he'd done anything then and there I'd have fried both of us. Alexa: *sharply* And if he'd done it to your family instead? Evan: *sits silently for a moment* Then I'd have killed anything and everything that I could find close to him. Alexa: *coldly* I am close to him. Evan: *shudders* You're different... Alexa: Why? Evan: Because there'd be no point in killing someone to get to him if it hurt me more. Alexa: So it's all about you, is it? Evan: *looks down at the ground* What do you want me to say, Alexa? Alexa: I want you not to kill innocent people. Evan: *balls his fist up into a fist as the light from his arms grows intensely* You....You're right....Fuck it.... *a longer series of curses go out under his breath* Alexa: *unforgiving* Yes. I am. I've made all of the mistakes, Evan, don't follow down the same path. Evan: *he calms himself down, having far better control over himself than in previous encounters* You're right....you're right.....I won't get a second chance if I stoop to that level... But if one of them hurts my family, I won't hesitate to hurt the one responsible at the first chance. Alexa: Just as long as it's only the ones responsible. *thinking how easily she could have been the one responsible* Evan: *arms drop to normal* I'm not here to be pissed off this time, Alexa. *smiles at her* Alexa: *drily* You may have come to the wrong place. Evan: *shrugs with a sort of genuine laughter he'd been saving up* If I have, then I have. I was wondering... *looks down at the floor nervously. His heart is racing and his arms flare only a tiny bit* Alexa: Yes? *awkward* Evan: I.....*laughs at himself for a moment and clears his throat* I was wondering if.....*notes the necklace in his pocket mentally and sighs, knowing that this could have been the perfect moment for that if he had the spine for it*...if that job offer was still on the table..... I mean it's fine if that's a no....but...yeah.... Alexa: Oh! *relieved* Of course! It's always on the table. *hesitates* You're not worried about the, uh...? Evan: I'm not worried about it. I'm just getting coffee and stealing some benefits from those assholes, right? *winks* Alexa: Absolutely. *smiles weakly* Evan: Good. *smiles* What's with the weird look? Worried I'll flip out at some pompous scientist who makes a xenophobic comment? *chuckles* Alexa: *laughs* A bit, but hey, I can always fire you if you do. Evan: *points jokingly at her face* Holy shit, I think she smiled, everyone. Stop the presses! Alexa: Oh yes, all scientists are emotionless automatons, hadn't you heard? *sarcastic, teasing* Evan: So you're either the one exception to the rule there, or you're lying pretty convincingly. *winks* Alexa: Me? Lie? *mock-innocent look, laughs* Evan: *thinks for a moment, smiling at her, then pulls the necklace out of his pocket* Don't think too much into this, but I got you something. *slides it across the table* Alexa: *looks down and picks it up* Why -Evan - Evan: *shrugs* I saw the bumblebee thing and it reminded me of you. You've been a good friend even though I've been a little shit, so just take the thing... *turns, hiding a slight redness to his face* Alexa: This must have cost you...*trails off* Evan: Wasn't that bad... The guy at the counter gave it to me for fifty bucks. *shrugs* Alexa: Oh...well, then...*looking at the necklace, thinking about the financial problems his family has* Thank you. *smiles* It's a wonderful gift. Evan: *scratches his head* Yeah... Just remember that if the gears slow down or stop, you can take it to the shop and get it started back up again. Should last about a year from what I understand... Alexa: Aww, that's lovely. I'll be sure to remember to do that. Evan: Yeah... *gets up, face still turned slightly so that the redness isn't totally visible* I guess I should probably leave now.... Alexa: *hurriedly* Are you sure you wouldn't like a cup of tea before you go? Evan: *pauses, sighing because he feels like he'll embarrass himself more, but he can't bring himself to walk away.* Sure, I'd like that. Alexa: *goes to make tea, giving them enough time to let the awkward dissolve a bit, and then comes back and offers him one* So what are you planning to do now? Evan: *face has faded to almost normal* I guess I'll just keep supporting the family, and try to get an education to do that a little bit better job of that... Evan: Not unless something really changes in a terrifying way.... *looks down with a nervous chuckle* Alexa: *lifts her cup in a toast* Here's to that not happening. Evan: Here's to most likely *chuckles, raising the cup* |
