*The Little Touch of Sass wasn't on the main strip, not even particularly close to the center of the drag scene in Mama Lulu's Avenue. However, it was a bold establishment with a large purple and pink neon sign on the front of a squat brick building. A drag singer was on the stage at the moment, and a sizable crowd was crammed within. Some sat at tables while they waited for drag queen servers to bring them their drinks, and others stood beside the bar, receiving their orders from the drag kings working behind the counter.* Miss Fortune: *As for himself, he was tucked in a small private table by the stage while he waited for the singer to finish. She was hardly a high class act, but there was potential. He was idly thinking about changing her routine, see how she fared with new material.**He's dressed in a long black, sleeveless gown that night. His wig is also the same, giving him a rather elegant if not gothic appearance save for the gold glitter on his eyes.* Lucas: *He's sidestepping through the crowd, doing his dead level best not to look as jittery as he feels. He's been in a lot of situations in the slums, but a job interview isn't one of them, and the only cultural programming he has for this situation says he should have dressed up. He's got nothing to dress up in, so jacket, jeans and sneakers it is.* *Anyway, it seems like the way to dress up for this job would have been an acutal dress.* Lucas: *The bouncer had pointed Miss Fortune out from the door. He comes up behind him and waits for the song to finish.* 'Scuse me... *Sir? Ma'am?* ...please? Elloise sent me, said y'might have work for a messenger? Fortune: *He doesn't even hesitate to flash a smile, an expression that he can achieve without having to try regardless of his mood. He doesn't really see the boy for who he is since all he can see is a five foot tall series of colors at first. When he becomes accustomed to the new aura, he fills in Luc's actual features.* Ah, that's right. I was told to expect a young face in here tonight. *He glances up at the stage as the singer steps down. Luckily, one of his regular employees realizes that he's busy, and Miss Mink takes the stage next to begin her act.* Fortune: *He gets up from the table and motions towards a small door off to the side.* If you don't mind heavy perfume, let's go talk in the dressing room. More quiet. *He leads the boy there, holding the door open for him. There's no one else inside at the moment, and it looks like the standard chaos one would expect.* Lucas: Uh, yeah, sure. *He follows Miss Fortune into the dressing room. In the back of his head, he's casing the room without even meaning to - makeup, perfume, hand mirrors, jewelry (probably fake, but good fakes were still worth plenty by his standards), even combs and scissors, all easy to lift and easy to move. Consciously he didn't pay it any attention.* Ellie said y' might need messengers. I learned t' run with Word, I can do everythin from straight dodge *moving quickly through a crowded street* to upright const'utionals *climbing walls* Fortune: That's fine. *He sits down in front of a vanity, facing the boy.* Your name...? Lucas: Oh, right. *Why didn't he say that first? Awkward!* M' Luc. Lucas. Fortune: *nods* All right, Lucas. How well do you know the streets, the Slums in particular although I'll be curious if you know some of the rest of the city as well. I have contacts in many places, and I might need you to carry messages to any of them at a given time. Lucas: The slums, I've run every alley in 'em. I'm pretty good in the Outskirts, gettin better. *The rest of the city? He hesitates, then says it* An I got a back way into downtown, if that's what your askin. *He could just show some sparks to the guards and stroll in, if he didn't mind getting looks for his clothes, but he's trying to imply a way to sneak in.* Fortune: Very good. *There's a long pause while he studies Luc's aura. There are some shifting colors here and there, save for the green core, but since he's just met the boy, he doesn't know what they mean.* I don't usually do a consistent pay, but since Miss Elloise was the one to recommend you, the lowest I'll pay is fifteen for a run. The rest depends on the information I'm sending along. *another, more thoughtful pause* Do you have some place that you're currently staying? *He doesn't specify anything about family since it's often a complicated situation with the kids who come looking for work.* Or do you need me to find you one? Lucas: I got a pad. *Wonders if he should have lied, in case what Miss Fortune found was better. It probably would've had a mattress or something, for one thing. No, better to look competent.* I don' mind if it's not every day, I got other stuff. But fifteen sounds okay. *Fifteen for a basic run? Holy CRAP yes.* What kinda stuff 'm I bringin? Heavy, fragile, don' get seen, anythin like that? Fortune: You'll mostly be dealing in information although I might send you with a specific amount of money from time to time... I don't think I need to explain what happens if that exact amount doesn't make it. *Not that he suspected Lucas of being a thief... not that it would surprise him if the boy was either.* But yes, not getting seen would be preferred. A good liar is needed if you do get caught off-guard, but I won't be giving you too sensative of information to start out. Lucas: *grins* Tch, how'm I supposed t' answer that? I'm supposed t' make you think I'm good at lyin when you're just sittin there believin me that I can run? Fortune: You should know just as well as I do that the Slums are full of contradictions. I might be a User, but it's still the truth of where I chose to live and work. Lucas: *User? He's surprised, but not too much. He'd wondered about the accent and grammar, though there were working girls who could copy upper-class accents.* Yeah, well. I do okay. Haven't accidentally confessed t' the pigs or anythin like that. Fortune: Then that's all I really need to hear for me to hire you. Lucas: Heh. All righ then. Thanks. How d' we mark it? *In Word, joining up was marked by spraypaint on a particular wall. In ordinary jobs there was tax papers or something. He was pretty sure the formalities here would be different from either.* Fortune: I'll have a cell phone here for you tomorrow. That's how I'll contact you for any runs I need, and you're welcome to use it however you like outside of that. *He has a plan worked out which makes it cost him next to nothing for the boy to have it.* That's all that we need. No paperwork or anything like that, sound fair? Lucas: Oh, sweet! *grinning* Sounds great! Fortune: Then just come here about this same hour, and I'll give it to you. Likely with a small run as well, just to a friend of mine. *He offers his hand to shake on it.* It will be a pleasure working with you, Lucas. Lucas: You bet! *He hasn't shaken hands in years, except the very different kind that starts with a high five and has three or four extra steps. Now, without thinking, he does it like he's meeting a coworker of his father's at church, back straight and grip firm, formal but natural. He doesn't break character any other way.* See ya tomorrow, boss! Fortune: Right then. Just go out the door there *points to a door opposite the one they came in* and you can avoid all the fuss. You can come in the same way tomorrow as long as someone is in here to let you in. *It's always locked from the outside.* Lucas: Got it. What's th secret knock? *He's kidding.* Fortune: It's not a knock at all, just a whistle. *also kidding* Now go on. I've got a stage to get on, Lucas: *Wolf whistles, on cue.* Later! |
