Seemingly Without Authority at Work For a long time I wondered why the Lord put me into a job as a manager when the owners would not allow me to have any real authority. I work in property management. I send out notices to those who have not paid their rent. If they pay, great. The issue is finished. But if they do not pay, then I report it to the owners. Sounds easy enough, but there was a time, under the previous ownership when no matter what I said, no matter how wrong it was, the tenant had the upper hand. The tenant would give an excuse, or promise some payment by a certain date, and no matter how much I could see through their promises and excuses, the owner would extend mercy and the tenant would not be forced to pay their rent. I have had days when my employer would criticize the way I showed a lack of initiative, yet every time I tried to be the manager he said he wanted, he would ignore the things I had to say and be the nice guy by allowing the tenant to make another vain promise to pay on a certain date. Too many times, they would not pay. I knew that the Lord had put me in this job for a reason, and I tried to do things right in His eyes by treating people as I thought He would treat them. It seemed no matter how hard I tried, how much I prayed, it was always the same vicious cycle. It came to a point where I became so discouraged that I cried to the Lord for help. I had a vision of two warriors in King Saul's army standing at the gate of the city facing King Saul who was ordering them to go and conqueror the enemy, yet they were denied the use of any weapons. I thought that this was going to be the day that the Lord allowed me to have a weapon, the authority a simple manager needed to do a good job: support from the ownership to really enforce the rules fairly with tenants. But in reality, this was not the case. The owner at the time did nothing to enforce the rules. I went back to the Lord and sought Him on it. I remember having the thought that the only way that I was going to be able to do my job was by joining forces with the Lord and trusting Him to do all the enforcing. Simply stated, I would hand out a notice and trust the Lord to do the rest. Either the tenant would come in and pay the rent or the Lord would move circumstances and have the tenant move. There would be no evictions, no stern reprimands, just a simple trust in God to handle ALL the behind the scenes and bring about justice. There is so much more to this story that I will be sharing with you in the future, but for now, let me just say this, if the Lord has assigned you to a task where you are in the position of leadership, yet seem to have no real authority to back you up... as long as it is the Lord who has put you there, He will be your source of authority. Trust Him. 1 Samuel 17:45-46 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, ... |
