![]() Main Information Name: Olivia Maryanne Gelke Nickname: Vi (prounounced Vee), Liv Gender: Female Age: 19 Birthday: April 17th Blood: Unknown, mother pureblood, so either pure or half-blooded witch. Wand: 11 ½ inches of cherry wood, with a core of dragon heartstrings from a female Romanian Longhorn. Academic Information Year: 8th Level of Study: Undergraduate double degree Area of Study: Alchemy: Transfiguration and Potions Previous Schooling: Homeschooled by her Oma Maren, then attended Durmstrang Institute Physical Description: Height: 5’6” Build: Olivia is naturally slender, and keeps her body in excellent shape, something especially important considering the amount that she eats. Her build is undoubtedly more mature than her age would suggest, with definite curves to her hips, waist and bust. Hair: Long brown locks that fall in straight lines down to the middle of her back. Naturally her hair isn’t dead straight, but with a nice, fully body to it instead. Olivia considers her hair her best natural feature, thinking that her eyes look too different and freakish to be proud of them. She doesn’t often do much to her hair though, usually just a brush in the mornings since it’s ruined by running her fingers through it multiple times during the day. Eyes: Pure liquid silver, bright and almost crystal like. Her mixed heritage has made them more almond shaped than most, with a slight slant to them. From a distance they appear to be a light blue in colour, and it is only up close that they can be determined to be silver instead. Voice: A Romanian base, with German over the top, thick enough to be noticeable, but still understood by most. When singing, Olivia displays the techniques of a Dramatic contralto, albeit one still in training. Ethnicity: Mixed ethnicity, though considers herself Eurasian and/or Romanian. The result is a different, though not extraordinary exotic look. Other: Olivia is both tattoo and piercing mad, with multiples of both. She has multiple holes in both of her ears, with three in her left and four in her right, as well as piercings in her right nipple, navel, through the side of her nose, and a barbell through her tongue. Jewellery wise Olivia prefers to wear simple silver jewellery, nothing too showy, but enough so that people know that it is there. Her tattoos include a tribal symbol of waves on her left wrist, a star and crescent moon on her right leg, the symbol for strength on her neck, and two quotes; "There once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her HEART" on the left side of her torso, and a Shakespeare quote "We will all laugh at gilded butterflies" on her right shoulder blade. She has scars littered over her body as well, from both the fighting club and playing handball, the most prominent being the ones on her lower lip and down the outside of her right lower arm. Her hands are very rough, the tops of her fingers covered in calluses to make them look almost deformed. Psychological Personality: Olivia was forced to grow up at a very young age, which has made her on the one hand confident, but on the other hand her view on the world is jaded at best. Although she knows that some good people, such as innocent Vikki and kind Karl, do exist, even in that situation there is still unease and unhappiness; especially since his two sons believe that she is out to get something from him. Generally Olivia views people as always wanting something from everyone else, especially from her, and is very wary of trusting people; this in turns leads to both abandonment and commitment issues. Of the few that she does trust, however, Olivia is fiercely protective, overly so even, having enough distrust of people around them for the two of them. She views naivety an innocence as something which practically, is not useful, and so those people need her protection, but something that she has lost long ago and misses. Olivia is a natural leader, courageous with a genuine concern for those her “command” in her group; although she might not get along with a lot of the girls, thinking them too airheaded and immature for her tastes, she will protect them in a heartbeat. Her first instinct of those around her in fact isn’t to panic or run, but to do something helpful; which makes her a much better person than she herself realises. It is rare that she uses her charisma and leading prowess with her friends to get what she wants, but at times, mostly without realising it, she will do it. Olivia does not make a good follower because she wants to take charge, and her first instinct at authority is to rebel, although she has curbed that impulse somewhat living with Karl, who allows her a relative amount of freedom. She is, however, unwilling to obey or submit to directions for which she can see no reason, or with which she disagrees. Olivia can be very much concerned with herself, in both positive and negative ways; she is very self-reliant and independent, but can be at the same time self-centred and concerned with her own personal advancement and physical satisfaction. As stated before, it isn’t so much that she will actively take advantage of her friends, but instead assume that they will look after their own interests first and foremost, as she does with hers, and tell her if they have a problem with her actions. Her immense energy makes her aggressive and restless, argumentative occasionally, headstrong, quick tempered, easily offended and capable of holding grudges if she feels themselves affronted. History: Olivia’s life so far has not been an easy one, full of ups and downs. She was born to Helena Gelke, a pureblood witch of low standing in Covasna, Romania. Helena was emotionally unstable all of her life, diagnosed with bipolar and with a drinking problem, constantly in the care of her mother Maren and later her daughter. Olivia was Helena’s second child, the first being Portia born some decade before, who had been taken by her father soon after her birth. Olivia never knew who her father was, her mother, in her more sober moments, declaring that she didn’t know, and her grandmother Oma Maren, who effectively raised Olivia, saying that it was a lovely young pureblood who didn’t want anything to do with her or her mother. Although outwardly declaring that she doesn’t care about the identity of her father, Olivia has always been hurt by the fact that he either doesn’t know that she exists, or worse still, knows that she exists and simply doesn’t care. Despite the problems with her mother, Olivia had a relatively stable childhood while her grandmother was alive. Maren has a hardworking and caring woman, always willing to look after her daughter despite her problems, and seeing Olivia as somewhat of a second chance to make things right once more. Although they didn’t have a lot of money, Maren often went without to make sure that Olivia had the best of everything. Although she couldn’t afford the usual private schooling that was tradition for young wizards and witches in Romania, Olivia instead had various classes held locally, including English lessons, singing and music lessons, handball and ballet, though the last did not last very long, Olivia’s focus being first and foremost on music. Although there were a few other girls wanting to be the next pop or rock star, Olivia’s interests always lay in her Oma’s musical love of Opera; however, she was too young to start the training, and so has simply learned basic singing techniques. Olivia was homeschooled in magic techniques and magical theory by her Oma until she was eleven years old and sent off to Durmstrang Institute. Everything in Olivia’s life changed when she was thirteen years old and her Oma Maren died. It was a devastating thing for Olivia, and she found herself basically unable to cope with everything going on in her life at the time. She was now the sole carer for her mother for one thing, so all of her lessons had to be put on hold, as Olivia found herself with no free time for herself, let alone time for any extra activities. She began to pull into herself, doing nothing but looking after her mother and the house, not spending time with any of her friends anymore. Her mother became the most important thing in her life, the only thing, and it wasn’t long before the young girl began to resent that and in turn, resent her mother’s presence. She ended up taking a year off of school, simply not showing up when it came time to leave. Understandably, this arrangement did not last long; try as she might, a thirteen year old is not someone properly able to handle a sick mother. Life as it was didn’t last too long; it was around Christmastime during her thirteenth year that the authorities found out about their situation, a minor looking after a dependant mother, and Olivia was removed from the home. Fortunately, she did not have to go into Foster care, as she had a close relative able to take custody of her; her half-sister Portia. Portia took custody of her at the urging of her father, but quickly found that looking after a teenage girl was not something she wanted to do. Rather than look after Olivia in fact, Portia often took her younger sister out, leaving her in a room while she partied with her friends in another. From this early age Olivia was exposed to the lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock and roll; it shouldn’t be of much surprise that she started drinking from an early age, partying almost as hard as her sister. This changed a little the year following her move to Germany, when she finally went back to Durmstrang. There she was pulled away from the lifestyle she was leading, but her attitude had drastically changed, and she spent a lot of time hanging out with the older kids of the school, trying to maintain her partying ways as much as possible; anything, she thought, to dull the pain of what she was feeling from her messed up life; this continued on for a couple of years. During this time Olivia was making friends, but the kind of friends you could never count on; which she found out when, after a night of heavy drinking, one of her ‘crowd’ drank entirely too much and suffered from alcohol poisoning, getting sick and eventually lapsing into a coma. Olivia stayed with him to make sure he was okay, while all of the others fled. This was of course found out by the school, and jaded by their lack of assistance, Olivia was only too happy to give the names of those involved. She was shunned from their group forever for this, pushed into the lower ranks of the outcast. Portia was not too worried about what Olivia had gone through, finding it amusing even; Karl, however, was not. Karl Lennox is Portia’s father, a stern but compassionate man who found out about his daughter’s young charge and was incensed. Practically he took custody from Portia, Olivia moving into his home and supporting her, although legally she remains Portia’s charge. Karl did a lot to help Olivia, stopping her drinking and holding her under strict house arrest, making sure she did her school work and told her previous crowd to stay far away from her, which they were only too happy to do. At first Olivia rebelled against this, going out in spite of his rules, but Karl was all too smart for the sixteen year old girl, and all attempts were quickly stopped. It was tense between them, until Karl found a way to soothe the angry girl’s heart; he bought her a beautiful cello and booked her into lessons every week for during the summer. After such a gift that meant so much to her, Oliva and Karl grew a lot closer, into a very familial relationship. It was because of Karl that Olivia got her life straightened out somewhat, becoming a generally happier and more social young woman. During the summer she joined a handball league, getting in shape once more and looking after herself. Going cold turkey was not an option to her, becoming an addict in the basic sense of the word, so Olivia did her best not to get blind drunk anymore, but finds it difficult to go without a drink every so often. Her aggression is still there, however, at her family situation, often at times even with Karl and his family, who do not like her, and Olivia searched for a way to release this; finding a fight club in Berlin that she could attend, the body of a handballer being perfect for the activity. Although nowadays she attends more for the ambiance and friendship than actual fighting, not wanting to have her pretty face messed up by boys. At school she developed a new group of friends, the closest of which is Viktoria San’ko; Vikki is one of the only females in the group that she can stand, the others being entirely too immature and airy for her tastes; the boys were much more her speed, she found. The last two years of her life, despite being difficult still in her family situation, and being left behind a year at school, have been relatively stable. After graduating from Durmstrang, Olivia was not entirely sure what she was going to do. It wasn't very difficult for Vikki to convince Olivia to come to Elysion University with her. It made Karl very happy, and Olivia was happy that she had some time before she had to make any tough decisions about her life, which she was not ready to make after graduation. Choosing what to study was a difficult thing considering she was an average student at most subjects, and she under no circumstances wanted to study Music at University. Eventually she decided to study her two favourite and best subjects, Transfiguration and Potions, figuring they would best lead her to a job in the future. Family: Helena Gelke: Olivia’s mother, a woman with bipolar disorder who was looked after her mother Oma all of her life. On and off her medication, and on and off the wagon, Helena has never been fit to look after either of her daughters, something which they have both resented her for. She is currently living in their home in Romania, sending Olivia odd letters and such, though they do not keep in close contact. Oma Maren: Olivia’s grandmother, who raised her from when she was born until she was thirteen, when she died. Olivia loved her more than any other family member, and considers her more like a mother than her biological mother ever was. Portia Lennox: Olivia’s sister, who has acted as a guardian to Olivia in more recent times. Helena had Portia when she was very young, and she went off to live with her father in Germany. After her situation was found out and Olivia was no longer allowed to live with her mother, Olivia was sent to live with Portia, her closest living relative. Unfortunately, rather than look after her, Portia allowed Olivia to go wild and did nothing to stop her out of control actions. Karl Lennox: Portia’s father, who is of no relation to Olivia, but has taken custody of her from Portia after the incident of drinking. He is a firm man, but a compassionate one, and although Olivia rebelled against him at first, they have now developed a close familial relationship. Although he was once married, his wife passed away some years ago, and both of his children with her, two sons, have moved on and married, stared lives of their own. Karl encourages her to pursue her interests, especially music, and does supports her. Miscellaneous Pet: A black cat with the rather predictable name of Shadow, a beautiful female shorthair. She was given to Olivia by her sister, chosen because of the similarity between Shadow’s bright silver eyes and Olivia’s. Knowledge/Talents: Other than English, Olivia speaks her first language of Romanian, as well as semi-fluent German. Olivia can plan the cello, although she has not played regularly since her grandmother was alive, and pulls it out only when feeling particularly down about something. Along with the cello, Olivia had an interest in classical music and used to get vocal lessons, being classified as a lyric soprano. Since starting her last year at Durmstrang and figuring out whether or not to go to University, Olivia has been debating getting into professional singing once again. She has been an avid handball player, finding it excellent for keeping in shape, and plays in a summer league in Germany. Although she's no where near the top of the class, her favourite subjects are Transfiguration and Potions, which she has decided to study at Elysion. Magical Weaknesses: Olivia is very much a jack of all trades type of student, which means that she does not have one area of magic or magical study that is more of a weakness than any other. On the downside, she doesn’t have a subject that is better than any others either, resulting in her being quite mediocre across the board, and never the best student in the class. Special Ability: Aura reading and imprinting; when Olivia looks at a person, she automatically sees their aura as though it was as clearly visible as their facial features. The aura reading works on two levels; first and perhaps foremost it can be used as a way for Olivia to tell people apart, as everyone’s aura is individual. With just one look at a person she can get an imprint of their aura and easily match it up to their face and/or name, though the latter normally takes longer for her to remember. Though the first imprint must be taken with her eyes open, with a little concentration Olivia can reach our her sixth sense and feel the imprint aura of someone else, finding them and knowing who they are even if all her other senses are gone. Secondly, reading someone’s aura works in a similar way as empathy; with a little interpretation, Olivia can know how a person feels by reading the colours of their aura. Each colour represents a different emotion, and the different ways in which the colours mix together tells Olivia what someone is truly feeling. The knowledge of what colour means what emotion is not cut and dry, and not something that Olivia simply knows; she has studied books on the subject, which means that she is often confused when reading conflicting interpretations.
