Level of study: Undergraduate double degree
Area of study: Written Arts – Literature and Media Communications
Previous schooling: 1st to 7th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Physical Description

Height: Holly stands at a height of 5’2” – a little shorter than the average woman.

Build: She has a petite frame and is of an athletic build. She enjoys running to keep fit and consequently her legs are nicely toned. Her arms are not quite as sculpted, as she does not do much exercise besides jogging, but they are slender with delicate definition. Her figure is not particularly feminine; she has slim hips and little curves elsewhere.

Hair: Her natural hair colour is a rich, chocolate brown but she is known for her shock of bright, coppery auburn hair, which is mid-length and cut in a very choppy style. She maintains her startling choice of hair colour, occasionally deciding to wear it a darker red or add light orange and blonde sections, and her natural colour has not been seen since she began high school. The shorter layers and jagged side-fringe complement her face and give her an edgy look. Her hair is naturally quite straight and has a brilliant shine to it. She almost always wears it down, looking somewhat tousled and scruffy.

Eyes: Although her eyes are almost constantly a warm brown in colour, there are moments when she looks into the light where a flash of amber can glitter from their depths. Her eyes are big, expressive and captivating; she always looks at someone directly when engaging with them.

Accent: Due to being born and brought up in London, she owns an English accent. She does not sound very proper but her voice does lean that way.

Ethnicity: Caucasian, British – she is from London, England.

Other: Holly is a reasonably pretty girl with a charming smile. She certainly is not extremely beautiful, but can be accurately described as attractive. Her pale skin is very pure and soft, almost completely free of birthmarks, freckles and spots. She certainly does not have many noticeable scars, but a couple here and there from her childhood. Her eyebrows are nicely shaped and reflect her natural hair colour – dark brown. Her teeth are pearly white and fairly straight.

Style is not something that is particularly important to her and as a result she does not usually stand out as fashionable or well dressed. Comfort and practicality are her main priorities when it comes to clothes, although she is somewhat selective about what she wears. Her taste is casual: straight-leg jeans, colourful t-shirts, over-sized hoodies and well-worn Converse trainers. Occasionally she can be seen in a short denim skirt, perhaps with tights in the winter, but that is about as girly as she dresses. When out running she chooses three-quarter length leggings and a baggy top, but otherwise she practically lives in her jeans. She is infrequently without an assortment of bracelets falling about her wrists and studs in her ears, but she wears very little jewellery otherwise.

Rarely does Holly wear much makeup and only puts some on when she finds herself in the mood. It is usually her eyes she emphasises with dark colours and the rest of her face is left natural. Her nails are often painted black but not always. She does not spend much time on her appearance but cares enough about herself to avoid looking too untidy.

She has a tattoo: an anklet of words written in calligraphy just above her left ankle. The lettering is pretty but small and it is not obvious at a glance what the sentence says. She has her ears pierced in the standard place on each ear lobe and a second piercing in her right ear just above the first.

Psychological Description

Personality: An unfortunate past is what has moulded many of Holly’s current personality traits – the good and the bad. She is very much of an independent nature, feeling quite awkward when she is forced to rely on someone else. Having to depend on someone, especially for emotional stability, makes her feel weak. She only truly trusts herself and avoids vulnerability fervently. If she suspects that she is getting too close to a person in a dependent way, distancing herself from them would be the only way she could attempt to deal with it, as controlling who has access to her innermost feelings is crucial to her composure.

However, this strong independence does not make her unsociable. Having lived quite a lonely life, she is very grateful of friends and company. She loves meeting new people and likes to know everyone around her. She is quick to develop conversation and is easy to get along with. She is very energetic, enthusiastic, vibrant and fun loving, always ready to laugh. She is not particularly mindful of rules, and can be quite rebellious and spontaneous when presented with the opportunity. She is not fussy, moody or gossipy and finds all three of these personality traits quite irritating.

Holly is quite good at evaluating personalities and reading situations. As a result, she often instinctively knows how to engage best with different characters and act appropriately in certain circumstances. She likes to be in touch with a mix of different people – she finds it refreshing to be able to appreciate an array of perspectives, even if she does not agree with them all. It is unusual for her to have a couple of very close friends; she much prefers to know a large number of people more generally.

She avoids arguments and prefers a peaceful life with friends she can discuss problems with maturely. However, when adequately provoked she can prove to have a fiery temper and a quick tongue. She is not one to watch her friends being treated badly or allow someone to take advantage of her. She can be quite stubborn in her opinions and values. Having said this, in most circumstances she is not easily angered and refrains from being unreasonable with people by writing as a means of escape. She finds this getaway best for staying emotionally composed. Scribbling down notes is how she controls her sorrow too, as she obstinately refuses to cry in front of anyone. It makes her feel pathetic and she would go to all costs to avoid it.

Creativity finds itself in Holly in the form of words. She is very imaginative and loves to write and read. She adores literature and theatre and also enjoys other creative expressions like art and music, but not nearly enough to be as enthusiastic about them as writing. She is quite uninterested in most other subjects and hobbies and she can be quite narrow-minded in this way. Writing is her passion and there is not much else that matters, in her opinion.

She is very content and composed on the outside, possessing a cheeky humour and quirkiness when with her good friends. However, there are a few issues in her life that have not been resolved and it is a flaw that she is unable to explain the things that have hurt her. When it comes to being troubled or upset about something she keeps it all to herself. This discomfort is rarely shown outwardly because she would hate to be questioned about it. She has no problem talking about the history of her past; it is simply the feelings that come along with it that she refuses to discuss. She struggles in romantic relationships due to her stubborn independence and difficulty in sharing her hardships.

To define Holly in a word: passionate, about people, experiences and, of course, her writing.

History: Holly’s parents were newly working in London in the same establishment when they met and fell breathlessly in love at first sight. They were both quite young, in their early twenties, and were still learning about life and what it was like to work in the magical world. That was why when Holly’s mother fell pregnant the couple panicked about the responsibility of a child. Abortion was too cruel but keeping the baby was impossible; it would be a major inconvenience in the lives of two people who still had so much they wanted to accomplish. This child did not fit their plans so it had to go. Adoption was the only solution.

A flurry of light rain had showered London city on the night of Christmas Eve when the baby began its arrival. Labour was thankfully quick and uncomplicated and the child was born an hour before midnight. The couple had agreed not to name the baby so they could deny all physical and emotional attachment to it but their hearts were broken at the sight of their beautiful little girl. In a moment of weakness, Holly’s mother named her daughter, giving her child her own surname. Holly Noelle Lovett was held by her mother for ten minutes before she was passed over to the authorities. Then her parents simply left, leaving Holly with nothing but a name. It was not easy for Holly’s mother to turn her back on her baby but with her lover’s arm gently leading her away the tears that dripped down her cheeks began to cease. This was the best decision for all three of them.

And so an orphanage was Holly’s destiny. Since both her parents were of pure magical blood, Holly was born into the wizarding world and so attended an orphanage for magically inclined children. Her days spent there were not happy ones, but neither were her memories of the place particularly bad. Orphans have one terribly uniting thing in common, which made the cold, stone building in which Holly lived the first decade of her life a little less gloomy. The children looked out for each other and treated each other like family. As she grew older, Holly became a sister-like figure to some of the regulars – the ones who had not been chosen for adoption, like her. She was definite not to get too attached to anyone, but cared deeply for them all. However, this unity did not resolve any of the issues present and it did not matter how hard the family tried to fight it, an air of heavy depression still pressed each child into their own little world of despair. Everyone was forced to be brave and forced to be strong; otherwise it was impossible to progress. Despite the building being remarkably busy, with people coming and going constantly, it was so easy to feel isolated. Holly was cared for well in the establishment and although the food was unappetising at times and the bed sheets were thin, scratchy and uncomfortable, she could have been a lot worse off. The nurses who cared for the children did an effective job but they rarely showed them much love, as not to get too emotionally involved. The orphanage had a school building and this was where she was taught in her younger days.

That was why the years she spent at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were the ones that brightened her spirits and released the little girl from the constant reminder of her parents’ abandonment. The environment of Hogwarts did wonders for her character and she developed into a regular social butterfly, part of a large group with many friends. Her love for books and writing was encouraged and developed at school and when she reached her final years at Hogwarts she knew that she had to pursue her passion for literature in her career.

Family: Their identities and whereabouts are completely unknown. Holly does not even know if her parents are still a couple or if she has any siblings. All she has in connection with her parents and indirect family is her mother’s surname, but she expresses no desire to use this information to reunite with them.

Miscellaneous Information

Pet: Holly has never been given the opportunity to have a pet, as they were not permitted in the orphanage. She likes animals, but is more of a people-person.

Knowledge and talents: Her talents are writing and wand-work. She is an amazing author, composing pieces with great tact, creativity and intelligence. Writing is her greatest enthusiasm and joy. She is also very skilled with her wand and can perform a vast variety of spells. Most of these she has learned through reading and practise, and she is a very eager and able witch.

Magical weaknesses: Being so focussed on her creativity and excelling in the Arts, at high school she often under-performed in other areas: mainly Magical Science and Theoretical Magic. While being very competent in Practical Magic mainly due to keen interest, she is hopeless at Herbology and Potions, and through pure dislike and indifference does not cope well in classes such as Arithmancy and Divination. She is not scientifically inclined and too narrow-minded to consider much else important besides her writing.

Special ability: From the isolation of being devoid of the love of a family and growing up in an orphanage, Holly sometimes felt as if she was not there, as if she did not exist, as if she was invisible. It is perhaps these strong emotions that caused the little girl to be able to disappear whenever she desired, as there is no other obvious explanation for her ability. Now Holly has mastered the gift and can vanish from the sight of others whenever she pleases. Although she does not need to completely and constantly concentrate on being invisible to stay that way, if her mind wanders or if she is greatly distracted, she can slip back into view unwillingly. Likewise, in times where she feels particular alone or solely concentrated on her own thoughts (usually when writing or reading) she can vanish without meaning to. She values her gift and would never use it to do another any harm, although that does not stop her from using it as a tool for trouble-making once in a while.

Role-Playing Sample

“Ah!” A jumble of sheets came to life with an abrupt yell and a flailing of limbs in the only occupied bed in a room of many. The tangle then rolled too far to the left and collapsed into a pathetic heap on the hard stone floor. “Ouch… Damn those dragons!” The muffled voice hidden beneath the blankets seemed significantly displeased, but any onlookers would quite definitely have deemed this sight most hilarious. As it was, there was no one lucky enough to catch this particular awakening of a nightmare-troubled teenager. Scrambling for escape from her prison of bedclothes, Holly’s narrowed eyes peeked through a parting in the sheets. One heavily laboured sigh later and she had collected herself to her feet, only to collapse back onto her squeaky iron bed with a clatter.

Regaining a comfortable position to continue her rest was completely impossible, so Holly resigned with a definite mind never to read about dragons after midnight again. She propped herself up into a sitting position to cast her eyes on a large black trunk lying open to the right of her bed. A collection of about twenty or more books was stacked beside the trunk, along with random items of clothing surrounding the area, most of it neatly folded but in no particular pile or order. Jumping to her feet, the sight prompted Holly of the tight schedule she had sworn to live this day by. If her journey to Greece were to be successful and relaxed, she would need to finish packing right away. She knelt beside the trunk and arranged its contents swiftly, adding the unpacked items in a reasonably organised fashion. Even with all her belongings inside there was still a large gap of free space at the top of the trunk. While clothes and shoes occupied the majority of the room, books and notepads coming a close second, there was not much else Holly possessed to bring with her. In fact, the content of this trunk was all she had. Shrugging and regarding this as a positive thing, materialism not being a quality she held in high regard, she slammed the case shut and buckled it securely.

A rushed shower and a change of clothes later, Holly found herself wandering purposefully through the large, echoic room she had woken up in. It was strange to be there alone and even more bizarre to acknowledge the fact that she would never return to the place she had called home for so many years. Her eyes skimmed over the empty beds and her thoughts turned to those she had grown up with. They would be on the Hogwarts Express right at this moment, whirling far away for another exciting year at high school and forgetting the gloomy aura the orphanage seemed to hold so tightly, no matter how hard its occupants battled it. She would miss them greatly as well as the friends she had made at Hogwarts, of whom none she knew were taking the same path as her. But loss was not new to Holly. She would not be upset. She had already learned that getting too attached to anybody causes difficulties that are not worth dealing with. In her own strength she would move on in life, not having the dependencies of anyone else.

Next her big, brown eyes turned to a large window, which allowed a great deal of the morning light into the quiet dormitory. She pulled herself up into the deep window frame and gazed out to the dull London streets. For a moment, she slipped out of view and disappeared into her own thoughts. The number of times she had taken up this position, with her knees tucked up against her chest and her arms hugging her legs, had become utterly countless. Her childish eyes had examined this scene when she was so young, far too young, and the emotions she tried to suppress while she lost herself in the activity of the city were the same ones every time. She could have sketched the scene exactly as it was from memory with terrible ease, and the view would be a reminder of this place. An orphanage – a cold, stone building used for storing unwanted children. That was her definition of it.

Tearing her eyes from the upsetting view, Holly slipped off the windowsill and slid her small hands through her shock of orange hair in frustration, materialising back into view. She blinked back tears and began to get angry with herself. There was no particular reason for her crying. She did not love the orphanage, she did not love London, she did not love anyone here. Sure, she had friends and she cared deeply for them all, but at the end of the day this was all she had: herself and a half-empty trunk. No one was there to congratulate her on her acceptance to Elysion University, no one was there to help her pack and give her annoyingly repetitive advice, no one was there to accompany her half way then get all welled up as she left for the next chapter in her life. Holly’s ever-active imagination was in overdrive as she tried to picture her parents, her siblings and all these memories that she wished she could experience. Sometimes she would convince herself that they were true and had happened, only to wake up in a dreamy daze or to stop writing abruptly with an unsatisfying sense of realisation.

Accio trunk,” her voice was broken as she whipped out her wand and performed the summoning charm with obvious effortlessness. Her trunk flew across the room and she caught its handle in her left hand, still clutching her wand in her right. Stubbornly smudging her tears away, Holly turned her back on the room and left the orphanage without another thought in its honour. Her future promised that there would be no need to ever return to that place and in that knowledge she could progress. A new experience was ahead and Holly could not wait to get started.
