11th Year Hecate; Herbology & Potions

Personal Information
Name: Brianna Cecily Rayne
Nickname: Brea, Bree
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Birthday: December 2nd
Blood: Half-blood (squib)
Wand: 9 inch Maple wood wand, with a core of one female unicorn tail, pleasantly springy. As a squib Brea has a wand that choose her, but she can only make sparks appear and is unable to do any magic spells with it.

Academic Information
Year: 11th
Level of Study: Undergraduate
Area of Study: Chemistry: Herbology and Potions
Previous Schooling: Home schooled by her nanny for the early years, Australian Institute of Magic (years 1-3), Hogwarts School (years 3-7).

Physical Description:
Height: While at 5' 6½" or 1.69 m Brea is a couple of inches above average height for women, most of the time she feels very short as most of her friends are taller than her; to make up for this she almost always wears heels.
Build: Brianna has been slim figured all of her life, and is conscious of keeping in shape because of her father’s regime that she has never given up.
Hair: Brianna has deep mahogany red coloured locks, which she often puts lighter and brighter coloured red tips into. Naturally her hair is quite curly, the kind that has a wave to it until about her eye level where it starts to curl into light ringlets, and for the most part she leaves it as it is. She does, however, prefer her hair to be straight, with the help of Atarah and her muggle hair straightener, and switches between the two styles often. She only ever wears it up for a special occasion, or when she is working out
Eyes: Brea has blue eyes, not particularly bright but with a strong saturation that makes them intense, especially when they have a light in the when they’re flirting, or hardened when they’re glaring at people. They are surprisingly almond shaped, a sign of her mixed heritage.
Accent: The fact that she has travelled so much throughout her life means that her accent is anything but a clearly defined one. Right now the strongest tinges to it are Irish and Australian, though she can sometimes also slip into the London accent of her youth. Her accent seems unique to her, with neither of her parents, nor her sister sharing it.
Ethnicity: English
Other: Brianna’s face is a little odd shaped, with a slight cleft along her jaw line leading down to its chin, which give her slight dimples when she smiles, or more correctly, beams at you. Naturally her lips are quite thin so she will almost always be seen wearing lipstick to plump them up, and she is the type of girl to wear make up every day to present herself in the best light as possible. She especially feels the need to cover up the mole on her right cheek, right next to the top end of her nostril, despite the fact that you can always see it through the make up, the mole being quite dark in colour naturally. Despite the fact that she often has to keep her hands clear when she’s working Brianna favours wearing rings and bracelets over wearing necklaces, loving silver jewellery above all else. Clothing wise she has two main streams; her every day stuff and her workout outfits. Her everyday clothing is quite girly, a lot of bright colours and low cut tops, everything from jeans to shirts to dresses, whatever she feels like wearing on a particular day. Casually she dresses quite vintage, dresses and tops from decades past, though she also has some more formal wear that is very up to date, bought for her by her mother. Her workout clothes are something which she tries not to let anyone else ever see, nothing more than often ratty grey and black sweat pants and a small tank top which is apparently ‘very inappropriate’ for her to wear in public.

Psychological
Personality: Brianna Rayne as a person can be summed up in one of two ways; quite complex, or on the other hand, a complete phony. On the outside Brea is a lot of fun to be around, and quite the flirt; she enjoys seeing boys try to charm her, thinking of it as sport to see them falling over themselves trying to impress her. Brea knows that she is a very attractive girl and uses it to her full advantage at any and every possible moment, always believing that she is in complete control of the situation, often to her detriment. She has been known to be overconfident and cocky on more than one occasion, biting off more than she can chew and needing someone to help her out; she has a lot of trouble asking for help from other people, even as she understands that there will be times when she needs to. To most of the outside world she is a confident charmer, one who has people around her often bend to her whim at the click of her fingers; people can either hate her or admire her for it, but that it what most people assume about her.

On the inside, Brea is little more than an insecure young girl rebelling against the lot that was given to her. She is mature enough to know that there are many other people in the world that have it a lot worse than she does, but at the same time has her moment of immaturity focusing on herself and her own problems, often in a dramatic, even melancholy way. The fact that she is a squib is what has given her such strong determination, a willingness to work hard in order to achieve what she wants; that was the reason she came to a magical school in the first place, and worked hard to get through the theoretical side of Hogwarts, finding her niche in subjects like Potions, Herbology and Arithmancy. Many people think that this is a rather unusual way to look at things, considering she surrounds herself by people that can use magic when she cannot, and for the most part she accepts it, though she has been known to have her bouts of bitterness at it from time to time. Her philosophy in life in general is that she’d rather aim high and take on the adventure of life than get to the end of the road regretting that she didn’t have a good go at making her dreams come true; this is what led her to be in Gryffindor house in Hogwarts. Her strong sense of determination isn’t something people often get to truly understand unless they know of her squib status, and that is something that she does everything she can to hide from other people, knowing how cruel they can be.

Part of this cruelty comes from her own past experience, not of just being the tormented but also of being the tormenter. Although she is a half blood her father still very much follows the old pureblood rules, and by the time she got to Hogwarts she had very strict ideas about how other people were to be treated due to their blood status. It didn’t take her long to realise what a double standard she was setting for herself considering these people had just as right to mock her, and was set straight in her beliefs. Her sister too, having gone through such a powerful experience that made her essentially split into two different people, made her realise that it was the person that mattered, and nothing else. From that point on she was open to others, no matter their blood status and ended up with a group of friends who were mixed in that regard, who she became extremely loyal to. What this really emphasises isn’t her openness as a person, but rather her stubbornness to think of things in any way other than her first impression of them, and how it takes quite a bit to change her mind in this regard.

This is perhaps why she acts the way she does around Adrian; there can be no denying that when she first met him she has a crush on the older man, enamoured by their four year different, which at thirteen felt like a lifetime. Since their marriage was announced Brea has actually taken the time to get to know him, and has found him less than pleasing as a choice of companion. Each of them blamed the other for the fact that they were so trapped, and this has resulted in an incredibly bitter and antagonistic relationship between them. The fact that she believes them to be bonded by an Unbreakable Vow means that she thinks the situation hopeless, and so her determination focused itself into doing everything she can to work against Adrian. She's often purposefully difficult about everything to do with Adrian because she thinks she should be, to the point of being contrary just for the sake of being contrary. This often makes him loose patience around her, and she has long since lost them around him, both giving as good as they get from the other.

History: Brianna Cecily Rayne was the first born of two daughters to Christopher and Lorelai Rayne in London, England. She was followed a little over a year later by another girl, and the last of the last of the Rayne, much to her father’s disappointment, Kiera Ophelia Rayne. Although Brea is technically a half blood, this is because of her ancestors on both sides of the family marrying half bloods; her father is adamant that no muggle blood has ever touched the family lines, wanting nothing more than to be a pureblood at heart. This is the environment that Brianna grew up in, one that was only exemplified by the house elves and the old pureblood nanny that she and her you. Her father was adamant on their pureblood ways and from their interactions with other families growing up, Brea wouldn’t have been surprised if none of the other families knew that they were not in fact pureblooded. The family lived in London until Brea was 10 years old, at which point they moved to Australia because of Christopher’s work.

The fact that Brea hadn’t shown any of the normal magical traits that most pure blooded wizarding children showed during their younger years didn’t phase her parents on account of the fact that her special ability showed up when she was only five years old. From that age she showed her animagus ability; she could turn into a small fox. At first she couldn’t control the turning; although she could control changing back into a human once she had changed, she couldn’t form the will to change into her fox form in the first place, something she didn’t learn until into her first year at magical school. Because of this her parents were never worried about her magical powers, not even after she was accepted into the Australian Institute of Magic (Melbourne campus) and was able to pick out a wand. It wasn’t until a few weeks into her first year when she was unable to do any spells with her wand that they began to worry. Tests were done on Brea and she found out that she was in fact technically a squib; her magical powers were not absent, but were of such a low level that there was never any chance of her being able to perform spells.

Her parents were understandably upset, her father seeming to take it as a personal attack on them, as though Brea had done it on purpose. No matter how hard she tried at all her classes, she was unable to perform any spells with her wand, sparks the only thing ever coming out of it. Her parents chose a way to ‘fix’ this problem that Brianna had never expected; half way through her third year at the AIM she found out that her parents had arranged her marriage, thinking that she never would have been able to find a suitable wizard husband because of the fact that she was a squib. They introduced her to the seventeen year old Adrian Kintobor; and for a moment Brea developed a crush on the older man who was to become her husband, finding the idea romantic as many thirteen year olds would. It did not take long, however, for her to realise that her life had changed forever; the more time she spent around him, the more she realised just how much she did not want to be married, let alone to the arrogant and cocky Adrian, who seemed to want her even less than she wanted him. Not wanting to stay in Australia any longer Brea requested a transfer to Hogwarts back in England, figuring that she would feel safe there and since it was where her father had attended, he allowed the request, while the couple stayed in Australia where Brea returned every holiday.

Hogwarts was a place where Brea absolutely thrived, and went through the most change in her life. While AIM was a place where she had shown everyone her prejudice and close mindedness, Hogwarts was where all of that broke and Brea was able to step out of her shell and really mature as a person. It was also here that she made a close group of friends including the Kavanaughs and Han Kinawa, along with her sister Kiera and her cousin Xander who also attended in the year below her, forming a special bond with the two males of the group as she seemed to gravitate towards the outspoken instead of the quiet Atarah Kavanaugh. AThey are the ones who taught her confidence, who showed her just how much power the beautiful young woman had over people of the opposite sex, and who, along with her sister, really showed her who she could possibly be. Despite all of this, her arranged marriage constantly loomed over her shoulder, as she kept up a written relationship with the man under her mother’s constant urgings. It did seem smart, after all, to at least have a friendly relationship with the man who was to be her husband, despite the fact that all civility left them both as soon as they were in a room together. She would constantly fight for her wants and wishes, trying to help her sister’s illness and her own lack of powers with different magical pursuits, this was something she never fought for the fact that she believed it useless, an Unbreakable Vow in place that would only end with the end of either her or Adrian’s lives.

After graduating from Hogwarts Brea did not want to return home straight away, not when her marriage once more loomed over her with her parents; she felt the need to escape and decided to take a year off before she started at university in order to clear her head. Her parents, buy this time living in Ireland, ordered her to stay at home at least for a while, so her summer and one and a half months after was spent at the new family home, keeping in touch with her ‘mudblood’ friends in secret, only able to tell her parents about Han because of his pureblood status. That was why, when Brea declared the intent to travel and visit Han, they allowed it. Knowing that her parents would be watching her, at least for a while, she did just that, going to Japan and visiting her Hogwarts friend where she found him duelling, something which she would have never expected from the usually joking and suave man.

Han, it seemed, was just as surprised to find her there and the two made a pact to never talk about what she saw to anyone else, something which Brea immediately agreed to. In all honesty she does not understand everything about what she saw, and knowing Han like she does tells her not to push him for answers, but since then the two have shared a close bond that led her, when considering universities, to the same one she was going to. Elysion University sounded like a pleasant enough place to be, where she would be able to keep out of wand subjects altogether, thereby hiding her blood status. She had no idea that Adrian has been pushed into attending Elysion with her in preparation for their marriage, which will occur as soon as they both have graduated; she has more troubles waiting for her at Elysion than she currently realises.

Family:
Christopher Rayne: Brianna’s overbearing, controlling military father. When she was younger she was daddy’s little girl, and in his eyes she remains this way. This has not been true since she received the news of her betrothal, and has been doing everything she can to try to find a way out of it.
Lorelai Rayne: Brianna and her mother were never particularly close, Lorelai suffering from an arranged marriage also and so not a particularly family orientated woman. Left with nannies most of her life, Brea never forged any close connection with her mother and so avoids contact with her, and her father for that matter, whenever she can.
Kiera Rayne: Kiera is Brea’s little sister, and the person in her family that she is closest to. Kiera and Brea have been a support system for each other for many years, each forgetting their own personal problems in favour of the others. If something is sticking in her mind, Brea knows that she always has a non-judging friend in her sister.
Ophelia Rayne: a ‘sister’ of sorts, Brea hasn’t quite figured out how Phe came to be in existence. At the beginning of their relationship Brianna hated her out of loyalty to Kiera, but very slowly she has come to see Ophelia as her sister also, and though they still bicker, Brea does love her.
Adrian Kintobor: Adrian is Brea’s fiancé, the man she was promised to when she was just thirteen years old. While when she was younger she found herself quite enthralled with the older boy, she has done a lot of growing up since then and now views him with nothing more than annoyance and disgust.
Xander Rayne: Brea’s cousin, and the only family member outside of her sisters that she is at all close to. Xander is perfect for Brea when she wants to relax and have some fun, and the two have gotten into quite a bit of trouble, especially here at Elysion.

Miscellaneous
Pet: None; though squibs usually befriend cats as familiars, her fox form has meant that she doesn’t feel comfortable around cats.
Knowledge/Talents: Brea has an excellent knowledge of all manner of potions and plants, including those one would call Dark Arts.
Magical Weaknesses: Magic itself is her weakness; as a squib, Brianna can’t even do the most basic of magic. She studies herbology and potions, neither of which require any wand work.
Special Ability: Since the age of five Brea has been an animagus, with the ability to turn herself into a fox. The fennec fox is the smallest form of fox, and even for one Brea transforms into a particularly small one, barely reaching thirty-five centimetres in length, not including the tail. She is a deep rich orange-red when she transforms, with a white underbelly and light coloured ears. Her distinguishing features are her eyes, which stay the same bright blue when she transforms, not the usual brown of a fox.
Notes: Brianna is a squib; born to a wizarding family, a Squib has such a low level of magical power that he or she is essentially unable to do any magic at all. Brianna’s magic is not absent; she can make sparks shoot out of her wand, for example, and she is able to see all sorts of magical creatures such as ghosts, but she is unable to perform spells of any kind.
