He was going to win; there was certainly no question about that. Heath had always been had better technique than Jareth had when it came to fencing, a better parry. Both boys were light on their feet; both had speed, and both moved fluidly and gracefully. That was rather unusual, considering Jareth couldn’t dance for the life of him, whereas Heath was a good dancer and never afraid to show it; but that was likely more about Jareth being self-conscious than anything. Jareth had a longer reach, a better thrust, but Heath was more responsive than his older brother was, and had a much better defensive stance. They were nearly equal to be honest, both able to push any Kavanaugh out the way without a second thought, but four times out of five, Heath would beat Jareth at fencing. Duelling was another matter entirely; Jareth had always been much better at magic than he was, a much stronger use of his wand, and could beat Heath without even putting much effort into it. Fencing though; fencing was the realm of the little brother.

Although he wouldn’t admit it, and although his little mental voice was telling him the exact opposite, Heath was in fact a little worried about it. Jareth was a pretty easy beat when it came to traditional fencing, playing by the rules; there wasn’t going to be much of that here. They were at a wizarding school where the people who actually knew how to fence were few and far between. Atarah Kavanaugh, who was sitting and laughing with Jareth right now, would have been to her fair share of competitions; but relying on her to know the rules well enough to enforce them if Jareth broke them was something Heath wasn’t happy doing. Normally it was himself, his brother and Atarah’s older brother Ryan mucking about; sometimes even Torin Kavanaugh would jump in and have some fun with them as well, but she was stuck with the elder female witch, and it worried him. Normally Jareth was a stand-up guy, who would never even think of breaking the rules. Not while anyone was watching, anyway. But today was different; his girlfriend was here. Lelani was excellent, and Jareth was definitely likely to want to prove his manhood to her. Heath would, if they had switched positions.

So would Jareth cheat? The answer was maybe, and it worried Heath. It wouldn’t take much for Jareth to win; just a couple of little swishes of the wand and Heath would be out of it. Heath was all for people believing the best about his brother, he did too. He just happened to know Jareth well enough that Jareth thought of his family as an exception to most things, following rules in competition included. Christmas time was always a worry because of the fights the whole family got into over Monopoly, where hiding money was expected and accounted for. The only question was whether, somewhere in his protective gear, Jareth had hidden his wand. Heath has his own wand in one of the pockets, it was reasonable to assume his brother had done the same. Helmet tucked under one arm, Heath went over to Jareth. “Hey brother,” he said casually. “Should we maybe hand over our wands to someone? You know, just to keep it clean?” That was nice and diplomatic, wasn’t it? Heath thought so.
