Special Abilities This set out below is not a list of abilities that we allow, these are just the abilities that are being used on the site and/or require clarification before picking that particular ability. If an ability is not listed here you are allowed to apply for it! These are just ones that may require clarification (especially those picking a bloodline ability) to avoid having two people with the same ability in name, but not in substance. These points below are simply the basics, however. It means that they cannot be broken, but they can be added to! If you want to change part of your ability you are within your right to do so, as long as it does not stray too far from what is prescribed here. (And in the event that it does, you could always simply come up with another title for it). If you think that this list below is missing some major component that you want explained do pm me! I would be more than happy to work with you to figure out guidelines and edit this guide to include them for the rest of the site to see. A list of current abilities being used on the site (mainly for numbers) can be found here! |

Non-Human Blood You apply for a non-human bloodline ability with the understanding that all positives and negatives of your ability will be explained in detail. No halfbloods other than half human will be allowed; ie, no characters that are half elf and half veela. There are some bloodlines that will only be allowed as half-blood lines, such as demon. If you pick a bloodline power, the abilities should not differ greatly from those listed below. However, it is understood that there will be slight differences between certain people, especially where clans are involved, such as with elves and centaurs. The ones listed below are the most popular of the bloodlines chosen, as well as those with a strong Harry Potter canon influence. If you think that another bloodline should be included in this list, do pm me. Centaur
Elf
Vampire
Veela
Werewolf

Animagi Ordinary Transfiguration of a human into an animal's shape results in the human having an animal's brain, and thus being unable to remember what he or she was supposed to be doing. Retaining one's human mental capacities while still taking on an animal's form is a highly advanced form of Transfiguration, and can go horribly wrong. Consequently, those who can master this Transfiguration are quite rare in the wizarding world; they are referred to as Animagi. More precisely, an Animagus is a witch or wizard who has the ability to Transfigure herself/himself into an animal at will while retaining her/his mental powers, such as the ability to think as a human. Becoming an Animagi can occur in one of two ways; it can be learned, as is the most often used way of wizards and witches, or it can be an ability a person is born with. The latter is what most often happens with students and faculty alike here, people who have been able to transform into an animal without having to go through the rigorous Transfiguration process. General Notes on Animagi
The Improper Use of Magic Office maintains a register of all known Animagi. In the books this has been referred to only as "the register"; its formal name is unknown. The register is a matter of public record. The register keeps a record of, for each known Animagus: the kind of animal that Animagus transforms into and any distinguishing markings. There are penalties for being an Animagus and failing to register with the Improper Use of Magic Office. Upon being accepted into Elysion University, registration with the necessary Ministry is verified. |

Mental Abilities Telepathy and Empathy Telepathy and empathy are both receptive abilities. Each of them can only receive thoughts and emotions that are presented to them, and nothing else. A telepathy under no circumstances is able to use their telepathy to gain access to someone’s entire life, unless that someone sits down and thinks about their entire life in their head. Take this example: Chris thinks to himself, I love Amanda. That thought is fair game to the telepath, though they would know nothing more than those three words (and perhaps who has thought them, depending on the strength of the individual’s power). An empathy who is in the area would feel the love that Chris would be feeling (and again, perhaps know who they were coming from) but would not know who/what he loves. There are multiple forms of telepathy, however, a simple telepath cannot project their thoughts to others! If they have the power of mental communication they are in possession of projective thoughts also, but simple telepaths cannot, no matter how they try, send their own thoughts to other people. There are also multiple forms of empathy! Again, you cannot send your own feelings to another person (it would be very rare for someone to have that ability at all), but empathy comes with its own set of problems. As far as I can see, there are two main tracks of empathy; those who are able to sense what other people are feeling, and those that actually feel what other people are feeling. Both are very different, and for most characters we would say to pick one or the other and make it clear in your application what kind of empathy your character is. If you are ever in doubt about what another member is allowing your telepath to think/feel, simply ask! There can be a lot said about avoiding the hustle of metagaming if you simply make clear to the player (and to the admin team via an OOC note) what is in agreement by both players for the telepath/empath to know about the other. Mental Communication Mental Communication is not the same as telepathy. While telepathy is a receptive ability, the ability of mental communication is the ability to both read the thoughts of others, and implant their own thoughts into someone else’s, usually heard as the other person’s voice literally inside their head. If a character chooses to plant their thoughts to other characters it is usually (but not always) done in a conscious effort, and is denoted not only by italics, but also by another colour of the writers choosing. It is also wise to have some sort of key in one’s signature or thread to explain what each colour means for the other participants of the thread. However, mental communication is still under the same first rule as telepathy; ONLY those thoughts that a person makes in a given post may be read or utilized, you are not allowed to draw any conclusions. A Note on telepathy, empathy and mental communication: none of these abilities include the power to sway one’s thoughts and/or feelings; you cannot have any power over another person, whether it is allowed by them or not. Occlumency vs Legilimency Occlumency is the art of magically defending the mind against external penetration, sealing it against magical intrusion and influence - the defensive counter to Legilimency. Legilimency is the ability to extract emotions and memories from another person's mind. Occlumency is not only an allowed ability at this school, it is taught here. It would be assumed that the professor of the subject is well skilled in it, and that the students majoring in it would at least be well trained, even if they are not particularly skilled. The same is not true of Legilimency. While it is not something which is completely banned from the site, it is very severely monitored, and in all likelihood, if one applies for it, they will most likely not get it. If you are going to include the ability of Legilimency, it must fit within their character history; it is an ability that should be engrained within a character and never an add on ability. If one is allowed to be a Legilimens on the site, they must get the approval of any person that they read from before posting any such details. They must also post an OOC note within the post to let the administration know that it was agreed upon by all rpers. This will be watched very closely. Please note that because Occlumency and Legilimency are learned abilities more than they are born abilities, characters are allowed to have these powers apart from their special ability, however it will be closely looked at. |

Elemental Magic En elemental magic ability is the power to control and/or generate and/or absorb a particular element or object/s. They are usually shown by the suffix –kinesis, which indicates a movement or motion of a particular thing. Some, but not all elemental magic abilities are listed below for your reference. Unless it is listed below, these abilities do not include the ability to create the element, so unless you specifically mention it in your bio, it will be assumed that it is the ability to control only. Aerokinesis: Ability to control, generate, or absorb air or wind. Atmokinesis: Ability to control or mentally affect the weather. Audiokinesis: Ability to mentally manipulate sound waves. Biokinesis: Ability to control biology. Biological Manipulators can heal; alter body composition and other things relating to the living body. Chlorokinesis: Ability to accelerate the growth of, control or animate plant life. Cryokinesis: Ability to mentally absorb or displace thermal energy within atoms, effectively freezing an object by removing all heat, often used to control, generate, or absorb ice. Electrokinesis: Ability to control, generate, or absorb electrical fields. Ferrokinesis: Ability to control, generate, or absorb metal. Gravitakinesis: Ability to manipulate or generate gravitons, or other types of gravitational interactions. Hydrokinesis: Ability to control, generate, or absorb water. Lygokinesis: Ability to produce energy shields, often invisible or translucent, as a form of protection. Magnetokinesis: Ability to control or generate magnetic fields. Molecukinesis: Ability to mentally manipulate molecules and objects on a molecular level. Photokinesis: Ability to control, generate, or absorb photons (particles of light). Pyrokinesis: Ability to control the kinetic energy of atoms to generate, control or absorb fire. Radiokinesis: Ability to manipulate toxic radiation along the electromagnetic spectrum. Telekinesis: Ability to manipulate and control objects with the mind, often in ways not visible to the naked eye. An extremely powerful telekinetic might be able to control individual atoms. Terrakinesis: Ability to control the classic element of earth; sand, stone, rock, lava, or dirt. Thermokinesis: Ability to reduce the kinetic energy of atoms and thus reduce temperature, often used to control, generate, or absorb ice. |

Physical Abilities Morphisis vs Shapeshifter Morphisis is the ability to turn into any animal (excluding humans) after acquiring their DNA via a simple touch. (think the Animorphs) Shapeshifting is the ability to turn into any animal or human that they so desire, not by touching them, but simply by visualising the person. (think Mystique from X-Men) The ability of morphisis, because of the power of a lesser and more restrictive ability, is more likely to be accepted than the shapeshifting ability, and although it will be closely watched as any ability is, a shapeshifter will be more closely watched when using their ability. A Note on shapeshifting: No character is able to transform into a copy of another character on the site without the express permission of the rper, and an OOC note in the post to let the administration know. Likewise, they are unable to imitate any professor or other adult of high power without the permission of the administration. Wandless Magic Quite a few of physical abilities can simply be explained by a branch of magic that people are naturally able to do without the use of a wand. Of course, wandless magic also includes the ability to perform spells simply without a wand to channel the magic, however it would be expected that for at least the majority of these spells one would learn to do them on a wand before being able to do them wandless (dependant on ability and age). Please note that this is not by any means an extensive list, simply a list of abilities that can be included within the wandless magic spectrum, which may not be thought of in that light. Normal spells being performed wandless will not be found here.
