8th Year Hecate; Magical Law & Politics

Main Information
Name: Makenzie Lavena Kavanaugh
Nickname: Mak, Mackie, Z, or baby girl.
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Birthday: June 4th
Year: 8th Year
Blood: Muggleborn Human
Wand: 9", Walnut, unyielding (solid/stiff), core of Chinese Fireball's fang
Previous School: Olympus Academy
Major/s: Government Studies: Magical Law and Politics

Physical Description:
Height: At 5' 7" Makenzie is taller than her older sister Tara and often jokes about it, though height does nothing to obscure her age in comparison.
Build:Makie is tall and willowy, her gentle curves there just to show she is indeed a woman. With a long neck and defined collarbone, champagne-glass breasts, a 23" waist, and small hips, her height is much more emphasized.
Hair: Dirty Blonde, though it may seem red or brown in certain angles. Often it seems she has a different hair color in different pictures. In texture her hair has a normal thickness and is soft to the touch. She is most frequently seen wearing it loose and natural, with soft waves framing her face, but she will occasionally sweep her hair up in a soft bun. It may seem to some that she changes wigs from how multi-faceted her hair color is.
Eyes: The Kavanaugh Blues. A mix of a clear, crystalline blue in streaks over a bolder, saturated blue. As with her hair, the blue changes in different angles and in different photographs. A classmate of hers described her as being "a different person in every different place." She will usually wear a light coat of mascara and some liner, making it heavier for certain affairs (or depending on how innocent she wants to look).
Accent: As the youngest in the Kavanaugh clan and the one with the least exposure to her Irish roots, she has the strongest English accent. Living with her family does mean, however that she will say things from time to time that stem from her heritage. Most acquaintances can only hear an English accent.
Ethnicity: Irish-Caucasian
Other: In appearance, Mak is often casually dressed, in jeans, with a blouse and a jacket or blazer. However, she will also be seen in class wearing professional attire fitting her profession, or at a social gathering wearing simple but elegant dresses. Her personality is flirtatious and fun, so her attire outside of the arenas calling for social obligation will demonstrate that she doesn't take herself too seriously. In fact, even her dress to parties will be sometimes outlandish (along with her makeup), showing her fearless side through fashions. When committing ultimate crime against her dear brother, nothing fits better than a comfortable (but pretty and sexy) pair of jeans, sneakers, and her no makeup-makeup look. She wears foundation every day, a habit she picked up from her sisters. For most days she will wear light blush, lip gloss, mascara, and soft eyeliner, thus giving her a polished but natural look. As far as piercings go, she has her ears pierced in the classic way, with no other piercings that show, more because if they did Manning would have a serious conniption. She has seven spine piercings that go down her back but she charms them to be invisible to everyone but her. On occasion she will show them to who she pleases.

Psychological
Personality:Mak is extremely fun to be around; her outward personality is very cheerful and fresh. She is always smiling and chatting, almost certainly making a few well-placed jokes. She is very endearing and will have anyone wrapped around her finger in a heartbeat. She appears very approachable and does not take herself seriously at all, making the person she meets able to loosen up and let go. She's the life of the party and the one people will call on to have a good time. A known prankster, no one is safe from her practical jokes-no one in OA ever was, neither was anyone in the Kavanaugh's household (a certain brother of hers now places a Disillusionment Charm on his clothes whenever he showers, and keeps all his things close as he gets dressed).

A keen conversationalist, Mak can stir the interests of even the cynical and depressed person, often even getting said person to laugh. Her extensive supply of magical pranks is stored in a secret place that has never been found. Even with being a prankster, Mak is still loved-and trusted-by many. She is also a devout Catholic.

A true Gemini, Mak is attractive, sly, inquisitive, intuitive, curious, and manipulative (hence why she's such a good prankster). She is also not all she seems. Being a good conversationalist (and terribly curious), she can see a person's weaknesses within five minutes of meeting them, and will use anyone's weaknesses to get what she wants. She sees the world as a giant chess game waiting to be played. She moves her pawns carefully to achieve any goal. She will take any truth and bend it to her will. After all, in her view, life is open to interpretation, and it is our interpretation of life that decides our actions and defines who we are. She chooses her pawns, and gives them some assistance on declaring their interpretations of life.

Law governs the people and is subject to interpretation. Mak has know for a long time that she wanted to be a lawyer. Just as she loves to successfully manipulate people to bend to her whim, she also loves winning an argument and bending the rules to her favor. She is intensely curious and has always wanted to learn how the government works while using her knowledge to benefit the family business.

In terms of moral integrity, not all is lost-she is very family-oriented, willing to do anything in the world for her family, and looking up to her siblings in admiration (even when she manipulates them to get what she wants). She chooses her closest friends wisely and gives them the loyalty she gives no one else. However, those closest to her also know that once scorned, the usually cheerful and fun Mak becomes brooding and vindictive, like a "Jekyll-Hyde" switch.

The darker side of Mak's personality is usually suffered by those she feels have done her or her loved ones any sort of wrong. Before she can even begin to address the issue of wrong done to her, she is already no longer a loving person. Instead, she will take any opportunity to make a fool out of her enemies, embarrassing them either through proving them idiots or with her sudden, fierce confrontations. If any of her sworn enemies were lying sick and dying across her path, she would easily just step over their body because to her they would not exist. For the loved ones that will ever anger her to the point of driving her to her dark side, the effects will usually be temporary, unless they harm her in a way she deems unforgivable.

History: Mak was born the youngest child of Manning and Colleen Kavanaugh, on June 4th, 1989. Born into the privilege of a "blue-blood" upbringing, she also enjoyed the perks of being the youngest girl and has been doted on and given unwavering affection by her parents, and most of her older siblings, especially Ryan. She was the youngest of six children born to the wealthy couple. Her older siblings included Sinead as her oldest sister, followed by Atarah, the second-born, then Ryan, third-born and her eldest brother, followed by Alana, her third oldest older sister, and Torin, her brother who is just a year older than her. Along with five siblings she had many cousins.

Mak grew up knowing that Ryan would one day govern the family fortune, because he was the eldest son. While that was fine for Mak, who didn't really care about running a business, she always wondered why Sinead was not the one chosen to inherit the enterprise, considering she was the oldest offspring. Growing up, she continued to silently disagree with her father's view of women while being much closer to him than her gentle mother, Colleen. At the age of three, she would have teas with her stuffed animals and invite her father and older siblings. Often, she would get into heated debates over what should have happened on a television show. By the age of seven, she was constantly having mock trials and watching court trials on TV, knowing she wanted to be a lawyer.

Attending Barnardiston Hall Preparatory School, a boarding school that her father’s family all went to (as well as all her siblings), she yet hadn't noticed any magical abilities of her own by age 8. This disturbed her, especially because she admired Ryan and Tara so much for having them. The only perk of having a sibling who had displayed strange abilities was that she was feared, and everyone respected her. Ever since Tara had "thrown" paint on an older Muggle boy, no one crossed the Kavanaughs. It was amusing how scared people were of Tara, especially because because no one else but the boy painted (who flinched every time Tara was mentioned) had been present during the paint incident.

At age 9, Mak had all but lost hope that she could be a Witch. Having said her goodbyes to Ryan and Tara for about five years on every September 1st (and missing them terribly at home), she hoped she could one day join in the excitement that showed when they first went off to Hogwarts.

One September evening, when the rest of the girls in her dorm at Barnardiston Prep were asleep, Mak laid awake in bed thinking about King's Cross Station and the magical train she could never see, the one that took Ryan and Tara to Hogwarts, another place she would probably never see. She could not get herself to sleep, the ache of envy deep in her heart. Such was her angst that she lay awake long into the night just thinking about ways that she was special, wishing the girl to her left could just put a pillow over her head. She decided to leave the dorm and sneak out, breaking curfew. She found her way to the dining hall, where she found she was not alone. There were others, older students who had managed to get the kitchen open and were currently taking their selections from the pantry and refrigerator. She had her tea and just as she was going to sneak out with the rest of the fun group, a boy tripped and was falling toward a recently boiled pot of water. Mak, not knowing how to help him, sadly wished the stove hadn't been lit, sadly hoped the water was cold, which was impossible. In a matter of 1.5 seconds the boy landed over the newly freezing water. The rest of the group there stood with their jaws hanging, including Mak. No one there realized it had been Mak who had frozen the water and that she had silently and happily realized she was indeed a witch.

In the last year of Muggle school Mak enjoyed her time with a smile, often taking glasses of water to secluded places to freeze them or just make them colder. She then practiced on different foods, clothing, furniture-everything she could get a hold of-she finally lowered the temperature of an entire empty classroom. She chose to keep her magical ability secret from her family. When her Hogwarts acceptance letter arrived in June 5th of 2001, she smiled and confessed to her parents that she had the power to lower the temperature of different objects. However, another acceptance letter arrived from a school called Olympus Academy for Magically Gifted Students. After comparing the catalogues of Hogwarts and Olympus, Mak fell in love with the Grecian landscape of Olympus and chose to go there instead.

Soon she was off to Greece, and while she was terribly homesick she soon found her niche in OA. Sorted into Hades, she soon found her place amongst the darker creatures of OA. Maintaining her charismatic personality, she learned that life was not as simple as magic, but that there were prejudices between Muggles and Witches, and that among Witches there were those driven to destroy Muggles. She understood why and has always wondered why her Mother and uncle never explained this to her. Seemingly neutral in her position on the Death Eater movement, Mak cannot bear to imagine ever harming her Muggle family. Surrounded by Death Eaters in-training, she found herself enjoying the company of students of every walk of life, with a civil but distanced relationship with those she knew believed in Pureblood supremacy.

Realizing her status in the magical world as a Muggleborn was painful at first, and she wanted to go home badly, having been spoiled, given all she wanted, respected for being a Kavanaugh. Here she was a nobody and it all meant nothing. Soon enough, she made good friends and was able to get through school, getting good grades and staying, for the most part, out of trouble, save the constant pranks she became addicted to, which earned her detentions almost every week and constant letters from her mother, who was becoming more unbearable to live with during the summers as the years passed, mostly due to the punishments she would get when she arrived home. The years in Olympus flew, for they were extremely memorable.

Mak soon graduated Olympus, a different person, much stronger and a lot more determined. Being back home made her feel even more the need to not only learn about Magical Law to make a difference, but also to later in life go to Muggle University and learn Muggle Law to show Manning that she could hold her own as a woman and a professional in the world. Loving Greece and missing its warmth and beauty, and also missing her siblings and cousins, Mak decided to continue her education in beautiful Elysion University to study Magical Law. But first, she will spend the coming summer months in Greece to prepare for school and torture Ryan catch up with Ryan, Tara, Jak, and Tristan.

Family:
Manning Kavanaugh: Mak's father, 56, your typical "the business comes first" kind of person. Manning loves his kids but is very steadfast in his ways, and growing never really had time for them. Mak is very attached to her father and she is his princess, his little girl. She hopes to make him see past that, to make him realize she is not just fragile and defenseless.

Colleen Kavanaugh: the mother, 49, she's a real sweetheart, being very close and supportive of her kids and her husband. Colleen is really the one that runs the family and the household. She is also very intelligent, could have easily been in business but gave it up when she married Manning.

Sinéad Kavanaugh: Mak's eldest sister, 26, a muggle, and writer. Sinéad has always wanted to be in charge of the family business, but her father is very traditional and believes that as a girl, the business cannot be run by her; this is probably for the best, as she is quite a power hungry individual.

Atarah Kavanaugh: older sister, 23, a witch currently at EU studying Mystic Studies. Tara is quiet, but not at all a pushover. She only speaks when she has something important to say, and considering her Seer abilities, it is usually something important. This usually serves to disturb Mak and while she gets along with Tara, she's not particularly close to her.

Ryan Kavanaugh: Oldest brother, 22, a wizard currently studying Business. Mak looks up to him and has great affection for him, though when his empathy gets out of hand she often finds herself lashing out. This often doesn't last very long and they are right back to being friends. He is the subject of many of her pranks and manipulations, and while he often chastises her for her behavior, he partly encourages it with his undeniable amusement and affection for his "Ickle Mackie." She would go to battle for Ryan, and with maturity is realizing his struggle with his Empathy, with being a Muggleborn, and with the looming obligation and responsibility to the family business.

Alana Kavanaugh: Mak's younger sister at twenty years old. She is currently at Oxford studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She's a muggle, not a witch, but she's alright with that; since she wants to be an artist, she doesn't think being able to use magic would be that big of a deal. She is not the smartest person in the world, certainly not in the family, but she's a genuinely nice person, if not a little spoiled and materialistic. Growing up, Mak was very close to her but time and distance have separated them, though they keep communication in letters and rare phone calls.

Torin Kavanaugh: the older brother, 19, bitter for his age. Torin is a Muggle, and resents it; but even more so he resents the idea that he's the "spare", the extra son that will inevitably work in the business because he can't go anywhere else, but will never get to run it. Mak feels sorry for Torin, because she once felt the way he does. However, she often finds herself coming to Ryan's defense, firstly to remind Torin that he can always choose to do something with his life other than mope, and secondly, because it's not Ryan's fault that their situation is such. She is easily closest to Torin because of the things they have in common, but their relationship is the most explosive.

Unna Kavanaugh: the matriarch of the Kavanaugh family, she is Mak's paternal grandmother. Unna tends to criticize Mak a whole lot, from the "dirty" color of her hair to how "Mak shouldn't share Ryan's love of arguments, because it's not lady-like." Mak personally feels misunderstood by Unna and keeps a healthy distance from her. All of the children find themselves defending Colleen to Unna almost constantly.

Winford and Kaleigh Delahunty: Winford is Colleen’s older brother, who runs an import/export business out of Belfast. Winford is a very easy to person to get along with, much like his sister, though Kaleigh can be very cold and impersonal, even where her own children are concerned. While Winford if of course a muggle, Kaleigh is a half-blood, though he did not know that until after they were married, and she was the family’s first interactions with the magical world. Most of Mak's siblings prefer Winford over Colleen's sister Imogen, and while Mak admits Winford has a little more personality, she feels Imogen is also a great person to know and not as simple as she seems.

Tristan Delahunty: The younger of the Delahunty twins, Tristan is twenty-three and a wizard. He is currently attending Elysion University, in Heracles and studying Arithmancy. He has a sense of humor which is odd to Mak, but she gets along well enough with him and will often threaten his peace with Ryan to get what she wants.

Jakodi (Jak) Delahunty: The older twin of the family, though only by a little over an hour, Jak as she prefers to be called is a twenty three year old witch studying Charms at Elysion University, in Hecate. By nature she is very rebellious, with a free spirit and a sarcastic nature that comes out around her mother. She and her mother do not get along; Jak is a tomboy and proud of it, and her mother thinks that this is no way to find a husband. She is very close friends with her cousin Atarah, and they share secrets with each other that most do not know, feeling at complete ease with each other. Mak often wishes she knew more of what they talk about, but she and Jak are on simple greeting terms, Jak realizing that Mak's manipulative.

Tracy Delahunty: the fourteen year old little brother of the twins, Tracy is very much the annoying little brother who enjoys playing pranks on everyone round him, especially by magical means. He loves a good laugh, and so does Mak, who encourages him fully. He knows not to prank "Mak the prankmaster," lest he should find his entire wardrobe frozen. Currently attending Hogwarts.

The Bennetts: Colleen's simple sister Imogen married Stefan Bennett, an obstinate, ambitious man. They have three daughters: Aileen, Linsey, and Brea. The three girls are rather spoiled and separated from reality, Linsey being the most level-headed of the three. While Mak dislikes her uncle, she finds there are benefits to remaining on speaking terms with the Bennetts.

Miscellaneous
Pet: none
Knowledge/Talents: An apt debater, knowledgeable in law and government, she keeps privy to happenings in the political and financial world. As a witch she is very talented in Charms and Transfiguration. She is like a book on Magical History.
Magical Weaknesses: She can't make a potion to save her life, cannot take Divination seriously, hates DADA because she freezes up during duels, and should never be left in charge of a magical creature.
Special Ability: Cryokinesis. Mak has the power to lower the temperature of any matter/molecular substance. Not to be confused with Hydrokinesis, Cryokinesis is not exclusive to water. Mak has learned to control this power relatively well because she as been aware of it since age 9 and embraced it fearlessly, knowing she was a witch. However, when she feels extreme sadness or anger, she may lose a little control, and those around her may find the air feeling a little cooler.
