Even though Amelia had drifted to sleep, the hard floor made it rather difficult to remain so. Her body had stiffened in the cold and kept half of her mind roused because of its discomfort. Amelia's slumber was delicate, and it was only because of her desperate need for rest that her eyes remained shut at all.

As her body was clumsily hoisted up, she stirred. And when the rain came pelting down on her as Xander carried her back to the barracks, she cracked her eyes open. The rain drenched her body and weighed down her clothes with freezing water. She shivered again, keeping her groggy eyes on Xander.

"Xander ....?" Amelia murmured, confused. There was little chance her voice would be heard over the sound of the thunder claps overhead.

Xander didn't hear her when she said his name, the sound of the rain was heavy and he was focused on picking up his pace to hurry out of the rain. He leaned over her, blocking some of the rain but not much. The mud coated his bare feet and bottom of his pants as he approached the barrack and went quickly through the door.

Inside it was dark and quiet, and the sound of rain drowned out their entrance.
Only then he looked down at Amelia, and saw her looking back up at him.
"... Oh," he said very quietly. But he wasn't about to strike up a conversation, instead he carried her to her bed and laid her in it.
"Go to sleep," he whispered as he stood over her a moment, then he left her bedside.

At his own bed he dug a towel out of his footlocker and dried his hair, then cleaned his feet off, and undressed to sluggishly crawl back into his own bed.

Amelia frowned as Xander left. She sat up in her cot. Her return to the barracks was a return to the harsh reality of the situation. She never left camp. At least in the hangar it was a change of scenery, where she could believe for a fleeting moment that she wouldn't wake up to war. Tears began to build in her eyes again, but she fought them back. There was no more time for crying tonight. She lowered her head in defeat and took off Xander's jacket, resting it over the edge of cot to dry, and so that Xander could easily pick it up when he awoke later.

She crawled out of her pants and cocooned herself in the covers to warm her wet body, but refused to go to sleep. She felt the presence of the man in blue lurking about the sleeping soldiers, waiting for her eyes to close so he could torment her again. For what seemed to be an eternity she lied awake listening to the rain outside. Her eyelids grew heavy with the passing time, and sleep seemed more and more appealing in the final hours of the night. Sluggishly, Amelia turned her head to see the jacket at the foot of her cot and reached out to touch it. It was still damp, but at least it wasn't soaked. She cautiously took it from its place on her cot and drew it over her like a blanket, resting the edge of the damp wool collar against the side of her face. She huddled up beneath it as she had done in the hangar.

In a sense Xander was still there with her, comforting her in the dead of the night, warding off the shadows that stalked her. He had seen her at her weakest and had enough sympathy in him to offer her support when her own two legs could no longer hold her up. That night he had been a light in the fog of solitude she had meandered in ever since she watched Nathan float away on that boat to Sinnoh. And it was knowing that she had someone who understood, someone who she could confide her feelings in, that made the jacket resting on her radiate warmth despite cold rain still clinging to it. Amelia smiled and closed her eyes.

For the first time in many weeks, dreams did not plague her mind.
