Heeeeeeeeere we go.

Marcus had spent the past week in the Recovery Ward, receiving multiple treatments from Healing squads every day. Chanseys and blisseys would waddle in, turn Marcus over, and forcibly regrow some of the bone mass in his shoulder. Then, the splints would be reset and the process would repeat. It was a massive step forward for medicine, and Marcus was amazed that such a process was even possible - but that didn't make it hurt any less.

With a massive CRACK, Marcus' left shoulderblade was fused back together. It took all of Marcus' willpower just to stay conscious. He could hear the crowd of people around him - monitoring his heart rate, watching as his body went into shock, making sure that the muscle was healing properly. His vision was still blurry when the turned him back over. His shoulder was still in a lot of pain, but he was used to some semblance of soreness after his treatments.

Still, something was different today. One of the shadows stayed behind. Someone was standing by his bedside...waiting? Watching? His vision had started to clear, but he was still having trouble figuring out who it was.

"...hello?"

**************************************************************************************

She had more or less been avoiding the ward for a while now- it's not that she wasn't worried about Marcus- it.. It was complicated. But with his condition being a little better off now, she had let curiosity and concern get the better of her, and she had found herself in the room with the others as opposed to just giving them directions, looking down at the man who had given her guidance when she needed it, and sometimes when she didn't.

She ran a hand through her hair, frowning as she realized how long it had gotten without her noticing. She'd have to find a hair tie later, or something, but for now she just wanted to sit with Marcus. Hopefully, if she was quiet enough, he wouldn't notice her sitting there. She'd hate to have to explain the bags under her eyes, or how durty her uniform was- it had been a long couple of day-

Oh. He was awake.

"...mm...Good morning, Marcus." She inwardly cringed at how tired she sounded. Ariel would get on her case later, for sure.

"...how are you feeling?"

**************************************************************************************

He still couldn't see that well, but Marcus would have recognized her voice anywhere.

"Hey...Mckenzie."

Marcus did his best to contain his emotions. The battle for Ecruteak hadn't exactly gone well. He'd been ordered to leave the people he'd trained - his closest friends here. He'd been moved to the front lines, where he'd fought for his life and the life of a girl he'd already saved once. Then, he'd spent four days in a coma...instead of helping out with the aftermath of a costly battle, he'd been the one causing problems, making work for overworked kids.

But worse than anything, Marcus hadn't been able to check up on the kids he was forcing to work. The first person he'd seen when he woke up was Autumn, considering she was the nurse assigned to him. Next was Ariel, who'd come into the med wards and (predictably) started crying, but she was otherwise fine. And there'd been plenty of others who'd come to see him.

Still, there was one person he'd been waiting to see. A young medic who'd reached out to him, agreed to be his student, trained his Pokemon, and let him be a grumpy old man with a penchant for scotch without judging him.

His vision was clearing.

His brain wasn't playing tricks.

She was there. She'd made it.

She was alive.

Marcus grinned, coughed, then chuckled to himself. "You look like crap."

**************************************************************************************

Really.

That was the first thing he was going to say to her?

She blankly stared down at him, unsure of how to respond. She scratched at the small bandages on her face and arched an eyebrow at Marcus, her own face betraying just how exhausted she was.

Pushing her bangs out of her face, she snorted lightly, a small smile gracing her face as she looked away.

"You look pretty shitty yourself."

Sitting back in the chair, Mika pulled her knees up so she could hug them and glanced around the small room, biting her lip as she squirmed. She wasn't too sure what to say, exactly. She had a good rapport for other patients when it came to bedside manner, but.. Marcus. He wasn't exactly normal, to her, anyways. He had somehow managed to wedge his way in the gray area between family and colleague, and she wasn't sure just how she was supposed to approach him.

She produced the cookie tin from her medical kit at her side and placed it on her lap, taking one of the confections out and munching on it thoughtfully.

The two sat quietly for a long moment. Marcus had no idea what to say - well, it was more that Marcus had too much to say and didn't know where to start.

His vision was almost back to normal, and he could see just how bad Mika looked. She was obviously sleep-deprived, and worse, she'd been injured. He hated himself for not being able to watch over the medics during the battle. If he'd been there...maybe there was something -

None of this is your fault, old man. Remember who fault this is.

Again, Marcus sat in silence. He bit his lip, trying his best to figure out the right words. Moments later, he gave up.

"What the hell is wrong with you?! You look like shit! You're all busted up, you've got cuts all over your face, and...and it looks like you haven't slept in weeks!" He straightened up, trying to be imposing from his hospital bed. "I can't believe you've let yourself go like this. One of the first things I taught you was that if you want to take care of other people, you have to take care of yourself. And...and...and...just look at you!"

Marcus stopped himself. He often forgot that, technically, she was his superior...he could get court-martialed for this kind of talk. But he didn't care. Not now.

"Goddammit, kid...you're not supposed to scare me like this."
