It had only been a minute or so since she'd entered this most foreboding of locations, but that was more than enough time for Emily to become well and truly creeped out. Gryilldae had disappeared from sight, even though Emily had tried her best to catch up to him, and once or twice Emily thought that the changeling might have been eaten by something. It wasn't just the trees now, the very earth itself seemed to ooze the kind of thing that fuels nightmares. Every time Emily stepped on a stray dead leaf, or bumped into a particularly well camouflaged bit of foliage, she had to look around briefly, just to check if something was following her...perhaps Ashara might have said that the young writer was being paranoid, but to Emily it seemed more like caution. She fully realised why almost everypony was so reluctant to enter this place, and she wasn't about to take any chances now that her changeling companion had gone. Or...had he? "Hello? Gryilldae? Are you out there? Hello!?" Emily stopped there for a little while, listening for an answer from her changeling friend...but none came. She started to turn around, but an unfamiliar voice echoed from the darkness. "I am not the friend that you call, but may I be of service at all?" Emily watched as a familiar shape stepped out from...well, Emily wasn't really sure where it had come from at all. As it got closer, the young writer saw some familiar features on the shape; a grey body with black stripes, gold jewellery glistening even in the dull light. "Are you Zecora? I've been looking for you!" "Truly? Perhaps I should invite you inside, then your tale you may confide." The zebra beckoned, moving at a much slower pace than Gryilldea had. After a few minutes of uneasy silence, Emily arrived at what appeared to be Zecora's home. Unlike Ashara's home, which had been little more than a cottage, Zecora resided inside a large tree, with mysterious looking masks adorning it. Emily was happy to note that this tree didn't have the aura of malevolence that the others had, merely seeming like a rather ordinary tree. The inside of the house had more masks in it, along with a cauldron, but other than that there seemed to be little more to it. Zecora disappeared from sight for a moment, coming back with two very basic chairs and two mugs of what Emily identified as herbal tea. "Now, you mare. Perhaps you could tell me what brings you under my care?" Emily politely sipped the tea, thinking on what she could say. "I'm...looking for a friend of mine. I thought that you might know where she is. Her name is Ashara...do you know who she is?" Zecora raised an eyebrow, putting the mug down on the tablet at her side. "Ashara...one who is tricky to find. Tell me why you search for her; perhaps that may jog my mind." Emily nodded, trying to remember everything about what had happened, and picking out what might be relevant. She told Zecora of how she had been raised on the island, trying not to bore her. Then came the pivotal event... "It didn't last forever though. One day, a vicious thunderstorm struck, the worst one I'd every seen. I couldn't find Ashara, so I hid in the hut, wishing the storm would stop...but it didn't. It just got louder and louder, threatening to tear my eardrums apart! Just then, Ashara burst in carrying this weird looking orb. I'd seen it once before, but I'd never been aloud to touch it. She told me to hang on, activating the orb. However, before it could really start working, a bolt of lightning flew down from the sky, striking the orb as Ashara held it. After that, everything went black...until earlier today, when I woke up on the road towards Ponyville. I couldn't see the orb anywhere...or Ashara." The zebra made a 'hmm' kind of sound, the one you make when you're thinking things over. With a swift motion, she downed the rest of her tea, ready to talk to me once again. "The orb you speak of is an artifact most old, of a tale hat is, for most, untold. The Chrono Sphere is what you speak, a dangerous thing for one to seek. The story tells of the power it may wield, a strength so great that it makes time itself yield. For you see, this device allows one to travel through time, as easily as many speak, or I rhyme. So, young mare, your task is not easy then, for your mentor and the sphere are not only anywhere...but anywhen." "But...surely there must be some way to find her!" "There is no chance...at least, not at first glance. You must find one who knows all that is time, who swims through temporal waters sublime. They may feel the sphere's place of rest, or your search for your mentor will be a fruitless quest." "Someone who knows a lot about time? Where the hay am I going to find someone like that?" "Fear not, young writer, it's not so difficult a task. In Ponyville, perhaps all you must do is...ask?" Emily frowned, thinking over the meaning of the zebra's words. "That's very cryptic. Can I have another clue?" "I'm sorry young pony, the rest is up to you." Emily nodded, getting up from her shake and offering her hoof. "Thank you, Zecora. It almost seems impossible, but this may be the only clue I have." "I am glad to be of help, that much is true. Perhaps your companion is now ready for you?" "My apologies for my absence. I was herding wisps." Gryilldae was suddenly right behind Emily, face unmoving. "It is their mating season, after all, and they've swollen to twice their usual size... Physical contact is to be avoided, I assure you. I assume you have obtained the information you sought?" |

Emily said goodbye to Zecora, leading Gryilldae out of the house. "Kind of. It turns out that Ashara was in possession of an artifact called the Chrono Sphere, which seems to be some kind of time travelling device. Unfortunately, it got knackered by a lightning bolt for some reason, so it could be just about anywhere, or anywhen. Do you know anypony that kind of...feels time? That's really the only choice I have right now." |

"It would be wise not to meddle in the affairs of Time. Like Discord, she is capricious, like Harmony, she never forgets." Gryilldae shook his head. "I will not help you with this. I will escort you back to Ponyville, and perhaps assist in other matters, but I will not help you seek Time." |

"She? Time is an actual person? I-..." Emily thought on what he had said. He seemed like the kind of person who wouldn't say such things lightly. "Fine, I won't include you in my venture. Still, I thank you for taking me into the forest...and promptly abandoning me in it." Emily winked. "No worries, Gryilldae. I'll figure something out! Of course, without you to guide me, there's no telling what sort of destruction I could cause, messing around with time..." Emily left that open for him to think about. |

"My apologies. I assure you you were never out of my sight." Gryilldae sighed. "And it would be wrong to refer to Time as a person. She is... Well. Discord is not a person. It is better to imagine her like that." |

"I see..." Emily's head was sweltering with information at that moment, and she needed time to process it all. She wasn't really sure who Discord was, or what the changeling meant when he was talking about Time not being a person, but she really didn't care. To be honest, she was just getting sleepy. "Come on, let's get out of here. I think I've had just about enough of this forest for one day." With that, Emily scampered off in whatever direction felt right, sure in the knowledge that Gryilldea wouldn't let her get that lost. The rest would just have to wait until tomorrow to get sorted out! |

Gryilldae looked after Emily, already factoring her stories and plans back to the hive mind. It was unlikely this mare could destroy the world, but... something about her, something about her unique nature... it unsettled him. The changeling was only rarely unsettled. |
